Garvan Skippers Irish U21s to Draw
Garvan Skippers Irish U21s to Draw
Saturday, 10th Oct 2009 09:19

Town’s Owen Garvan skippered the Republic of Ireland U21s and played the full 90 minutes as his side drew 1-1 with Georgia in a European U21 Championships qualifier in Dublin last night. Garvan was winning his 12th cap at U21 level.

Georgia’s Giorgi Ivanishvili netted a minute from time to deny the Irish their first win of the campaign, Blackburn’s Alan Judge having put the home side in front in the first half. The Irish U21s face Switzerland in Waterford on Tuesday.

Later today, Carlos Edwards and Tamás Priskin could add to their haul of international caps. Priskin’s Hungarians, who have a slim chance of qualification for the World Cup, face Portugal today and Denmark on Wednesday. The striker has previously won 21 caps, scoring eight goals.

Edwards’s Trinidad and Tobago have no chance of qualification and complete their fixtures with games against Costa Rica today and Mexico on Wednesday. The midfielder has previously won 76 full international caps and has scored four goals.

Gareth McAuley’s Northern Ireland side are without a game over the weekend but face a World Cup qualifier in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, a match they have to win to stand any chance of reaching South Africa. The central defender has previously won 19 caps and has scored one international goal.

England’s game in Ukraine is not being shown on live TV but is available online for free on Bet365, full details on their site, or for £11.99 here.

maybe he just doesnt work hard enough in training - he's certainly slow in the Fizzy league and needs his "minders" around him, in MF, to allow him his time on the ball. He doesnt tackle, cant run, but has a good pass on him . Maybe thats the reason he's not in the team !

deserves a run out i'd say.

You do wonder whether he has the mental strength to be a top player? Remember he nearly packed it all in a few years ago? He has failed to live up to his promise in my opinion, he looks lazy at times. He could be brilliant for us but doesn't dominate games often enough. Leadbitter & Norris will be our main two in the middle when both fit surely?

Garvan is creative, therefore does not fit in with Mr. Keane's 'vision'

I agree that Garvan is the best passer of the ball that we have in a squad. The two main issues with him is a lack of pace and strength but these failings could be labeled with the rest of our midfield (Trottet, Quinn, Colback etc)
I think that kid needs a decent coach and someone that is prepared to develop him into the player that his potential merits.
Would that be the caring, sharing, understanding Keano ..........methinks not !!
Hence the reason for Roy wanting to get rid of him, but that would be such a shame.
The one thing that is so obvious with our current situation is that Keano needs help from an experienced coach. At the moment he seems to be master of all and lacks the subtlety required, especially when asked media questions whcih results in fear and a bad atmosphere amongst the players. Share the burden Roy and concentrate on coaching and motivating..........but alas I think he is too pig headed to admit he needs help!!
Here's in hope !!

Garvan in RK's eyes probably falls short in the kicking lumps out of the opposition department.
How many of our young players reach a certain level and then fail to develope any further? Surely we have something lacking in the coaching set-up and RK is NOT the man to solve it.

Does Colbeck or Leadbitter "kick lmps out of opponents"? - No ! But they do each possess an energy , can tackle , win the ball , run, and have pace. Which is why RK got them in, to strengthen the midfield. Garvan has NONE of these attributes. So maybe some of you anti RK people should try looking at the real reasons why Garvan is not in the side. Incidently Garvan wasnt featuring much in Magiltons side either,(and he used to kick lumps out of opponents didnt he ?...no of course he didnt!) or have you all conviently forgotten this fact !

They have also forgotton that Garvan has featured in games this season but has failed to produce. Do not get me wrong I Like Garvan and would love to see him fufill his potential and his promise to get his head down and work his way back into the team is a step in the right direction, and I hope he does it. But to start moaning that he isn't in the team now when there are players playing better than him in his position is ridiculas. It is up to Garven to win his place back.

garvan had many chances and failed, under jim and keane, lets face it he's a headless chicken most of the time

Sorry, but Garvan should be in our first team, he's the new Gerrard given a good run in the first team, and he's Irish. Come on Roy , give him a decent chance, It's not all about your best pals, It's also about picking the best team surely !

The new Gerrard? Sorry, but i saw nothing of that quality come out of him last season. He's not quick or inventive enough to be our creative force, and he doesn't like to get stuck in either. He's a boring luxury with no end result, glad he's not moping around on the pitch out of sentimentality. Hopefully a spell out of the squad will give him the kick up the arse that he clearly needs.

OK, Garvan is slow. And OK, he may not leg it around the pitch like a lunatic every minute of the match, but he's pretty much the only member of our squad who can actually pick out a pass. And last season he contributed 7 goals from 22 starts and 15 sub appearances, making him our highest scoring midfielder (third highest overall, behind Stead and Pablo). Funny how quickly such contributions are forgotten in the wake of a couple bad performances (in games where the entire team played badly).

It's all well and good setting out to 'dominate' the midfield battles with hard tackling players (something that hasn't really seemed to be working so far anyway, with the amount of goals we've conceded) but it's pretty much essential to have at least some degree of creativity in the centre, rather than the current tactic of filling the team with players whose major attribute is that they "have a good engine" and little else. Not that I'm belittling the contribution of any of Norris, Trotter, Quinn or Leadbitter, who are all decent players (particularly the expensive two). It's just that having two (or more) of them in the same midfield is a bit pointless becuase they essentially bring exactly the same thing to the team.

He is slow, but Trotter is no Linford Christie either!

Garvan's passing and crosses from midfield create chances, thats the kind of service our forwards need to score. I cant be the only one whose realised the majority of our goals are coming from midfielders and defenders (and im not complaining, it really doesnt matter that much). But its still strange!

Our forwards can't score because noone creating a decent enough chance, a chance that a player like Garvan can produce.

Lets give him a chance and see what happens.

Enough of this. Let's have the headline Rhodes scores a hat-trick for Huddersfield. Scored more than Beckford this season I believe now. This statistic alone ought to condemn Keane.

Would Sir Bobby have picked Garvan ot Trotter?
I think we all know the answer.

The Football League Show on BBC1 last night said that Jordan Rhodes headed hat-trick was the fastest ever, taking the crown from one scored half a century ago by Dixie Dean!! That boy is keeping better company than any of his ex-team mates.
