Keane: Finishing Let Us Down
Keane: Finishing Let Us Down
Tuesday, 20th Oct 2009 23:34

Boss Roy Keane said that bad finishing and good goalkeeping from Watford keeper Scott Loach were to blame for his side’s failure to beat the Hornets and the winless run stretching to 13 games. Watford manager Malky Mackay conceded that Town deserved to win.

Keane said: “Watford rode their luck and we were let down by bad finishing and good goalkeeping.

“But I've been in football long enough to know that if you don't take your chances it'll kick you in the teeth.

“We're not scoring enough goals. I can sit here and make excuses, but we've got to take our chances.

“Tonight we didn't, but I've got no problem with my team's performance, in terms of their spirit and workrate.

“We got the ball in the right areas and created chances, but when you don't get a second goal there are bound to be a few nerves.

"The players didn't deserve that. We started well, got the goal, Jon Walters hit the bar and we had some good chances to get that second goal, but when you are at the bottom of the league you can get a bit edgy at the end and we didn't see the game out.

"We should have won the game. Our keeper has hardly had a shot to save in the two matches he's been here, but we've ended up with just two points when we should have had six.

"I feel very disappointed for the players. They gave everything again and their keeper was the best player on the park.

"It's a massive test for us now but we have got to face up to it.

"Thirteen games without a win is a bad run. We can't get away from that and there's no hiding place.

“I can't fault my players and back them 100 per cent, but to go that many games without a victory is unacceptable.”

Hornets boss Malky Mackay admitted his side were second best: "Ipswich deserved to win. We were below par and most definitely got out of jail. If I'm honest, I couldn't see a goal coming.

"We kept going and going and were still fighting, which I expect, but it didn't look like we would create an equaliser.

"But when there are five or 10 minutes left in any game you've always got a chance - you've just got to keep pushing.

"It was great we got the goal and a point and we showed a real resilience and never-say-die attitude.

"This is a tough league and it's a real scrap and battle. A lot of teams are showing real resilience and I'm glad it was us tonight."

I was glued to my screen the entire match and was watching with pride as Town kept winning corners and testing Watford again and again at the end of the game. I kept thinking, that's right boys keep pressuring them and then I couldn't help screaming when I read at 95 mins that Watford had scored. I was so uncontrollably loud that it brought in another coworker to find out what was wrong. When I told her the situation, that we haven't won a game yet, that we've had 4 games go from winning to drawing in stoppage time, how much money we spent on new players and how excited we were to get this manager, she said I should probably support a different team. Seriously though, this has me so depressed. We just have to wallop Plymouth...I cant take this pressure anymore! AAAAAAARGGH!!!

They should give Keane the sack - I've heard the Royal Mail are looking for temporary employees.

I was at the match, just back home. We were robbed. I worried after Saturdays match that we had no passion or fight - we had both tonight and should have won. Rosenior, Edwards, leadbitter, Walters, wright, Pabs, smith and McAuley were all excellent. We should be proud tonight. But the lack of a win is troubling the players now too. They were distraught after the equalised - rosenior threw his shirt into the crowd. But two wins in the next two matches are essential.

No Keane should not get the boot. Give him and the team some time. Rome wasn't built in a day. Team is improving all the time. Played well tonight. We do need a goalscorer though.

Have you no self respect. Time to fall on your sword Roy. You've turned our team into a joke and placed us in mortal danger of joining the canaries in league 1. Step away from the football team Roy, just walk away.

right ive just made a account just to voice my opnion as it has been said before we need a striker full stop are midfield are looking alot more creative than last year and they can only get better are defence have finally discoved some of the passion we need from them.

on the matter of keane how can you moaners even think about sacking a manager midway through the first half of the season? he has come in to ipswich and stopped the players getting away with murder and now they are accutly being pushed they dont like it.

im gonna put money on us finishing in top four tomorrow because i firmly belive we have the capability of doing so and all you moaners accutly need to look at the bigger picture rather than current form.

this thread, bar a few, is full of complete idiots who should be ashamed to call themselves fans. I'm sure i speak on behalf on the majority of fans who were at p.r tonight in that we looked like a really good side. Apart from some lackluster finishing, we outright deserved to win the game.
True heartbreak but real passion, good to see and strangly uplifting.
Next up plyms away. Win?

Im going to Plymouth away, couldn't make tonight as I am at Uni in Pompey...the team is improving all the time, the supporters applauded the team off at the end tonight, when you are at the bottom you don't get the rub of the green, all of you moaners get behind the team for feck sake, Keane has been here for 5 minutes, give him a chance, how many games have we actually been awful in? By my account, just Newcastle at home. Get behind the team, you so called supporters! COYB!

PLayed well tonight as i listened to it from New Zealand.
Again i felt sick as a dog when they scored.

BUT they are improving as a team. Plenty of points to be won.

Maybe he should stop looking for prem players and look at good solid championship players. With Portsmouth rumoured to be making a move for GIO why cant Town do it??? Marcus Evans should pay what ever the guy wants for a loan until the season end. His goals could make the difference.

I just wanted to cry when I saw the BBC Football website shoot up with the Watford goal. De ja vu!! Fans can't help but be worried but I'm sure it is coming, we are actually playing better than sides and not hanging on for dear life!!

The positives are there, patience. For all the RK nay sayers, he has produced a side that have been in a winning position 4-5 times this year deep into injury time. What more can he do???

GARETH SOUTHGATE was sacked last night - just an hour after leading Middlesbrough to within a point of the top of the Championship.

And they are at the top end of the table lol

Maybe get him in for the season to sort out the defence ??/ pmsl

in agreement with FranzGumm...we were brilliant tonight. Great preformances all through the team barring Martin & Trotter..
Rosenior, Edwards, Leadbitter, Wright, McCauley, Smith, Pablo and Walters were brilliant first half and most of them throughout the game.

Rosenior and Edwards look a real threat with pace down the right and Rosenior showed tonight he can defend really well also...good to see Wright back...solid and reliable..McCauley looked full of beans and Smith didnt put a foot wrong til that injury time moment.
Leadbitter assured and dictating things, Edwards brilliant running with the ball...Pablo and Walters linking up well and causing their defence no end of problems first half..

Lots of balls falling to players outside of the box yet only leadbitter looking likely to score one of them...Garvan used to knock a few of them in

Countless headed opportunities with McCauley getting up the pitch well for every set piece...

Just need to be more clinical...we deserved to be 3-0 up at half time. It will come though...Almost need Priskin to be there in the box to finish, but the approach play by walters and pablo is stronger...how can we accomodate him??

Maybe he could play that left wing role like a Bellamy and be there to poke home the long crosses from edwards and rosenior

that back four could be the right one..
Wright, McCauley, Smith, Rosenior
when fit
Civelli, Norris, Leadbitter, Edwards
Pablo and Walters

The lucks gonna turn if we keep playing like we did tonight...
Lets get a run going town!
The hunger's there...how we celebrated that goal and the Rosenior/Leadbitter anger at final whistle..

Lets get 3 points next game...and seize the momentum. We outclassed Watford tonight. Their manager said it, their fans said it in the pub

In 40 years of supporting Ipswich I have never seen us so devoid of luck! I don't care how good a team is they still need that bit of luck, the 50/50 call that goes our way, the deflection that flies into the net instead of over the bar etc etc. We just dont have that so far this season, people say things even themselves out during the course of a season if that is true then we are going to come into a lot of luck and soon. Great performance by the boys I have said we have the basis of a very good team, we need two more players then watch us go.

I was at the match and agree with all the comments from those who were there also. If Watford had not committed daylight robbery would those anti RK fans still be calling for his head?

I was surprised when RK said that he had swapped Martin for Peters as a tactical decision. Martin was doing OK and yet Peters did not bring anything new to the team. My only gripe for the night really.

At least Macca's performance and goal has shut up the Mccauley must go brigade.

I was at the game last night. It was a big improvement over the rubbish we have seen in recent weeks, and awful to concede the late equaliser. The team worked hard and tried their best, but the fact is they did not win for the 13th time of trying. Responsibility has to rest with the manager, whose job it was over the summer to improve the pretty decent squad we have. To be relying on Walters up front (he works hard and I like him, but hardly a striker to fire us to promotion!) is not good enough, and shows how we should have signed a goal-scorer. Keane's signings over the summer (Brown, Healy, Priskin, Martin, Delaney) have all hardly played or been flops thus far. D.Wright was one of the best last night, which makes his exclusion over recent weeks even more inexcusable.

Yes, I saw Southgate was sacked when they are 1 point off the lead in the Championship! He seems a very sensible man to be and I wish we could be governed by someone with a cool head. Time to replace the manager I think, not because of impatience but the fact our results are continually unacceptable (as Keane admits) and the teams just above the relegation zone now have DOUBLE the points we have!!

idont know why people are moaning, yes were bottem of the league nobody can deny we were very good last night, but when your down the bottem and you dont take your chances the confidents gets hit when you concede another late goal. roy keane wont get sacked and he wont walk, ive seen enough to know where gonna get out of this rut starting with a win on saturday then things will pick up, i doubt we'll get near the play-offs this season, but next season we can really push on and im sure there will be money to spend on the 2 areas keane knows he needs experiance, get behind the team and roy kean beacuse he's going nowhere were not gonna get relegated lets urge the team on to a win on saturday.

"So those fans who were at the game, what do you think, should RK get the boot? "

No he shouldn't! We were excellent for 99.9% of the game - the players were simply unable to concentrate for the WHOLE game, and this is an area of the mental (as opposed to physical) game that Keano needs to address urgently.

Unlike some people who post on here, I actually was at PR last night. I was hugely disapointed with the result, but impressed with the performance and effort put in by the team. We played Watford off the pitch for most of the game, but did not take our chances and fell to the sucker punch at the end.

I'm amazed at some so-called fans. There were a bunch of muppets behind me who spent the entire game criticizing every town player without exception - moaning about them being too slow, not good enough, not putting in enough effort(!) etc, etc. They could do nothing right, it seems - even when we scored, they weren't happy because it wasn't a striker who scored!!

Well done to the true fans who showed their support last night.
