Wickham Misses Plymouth and Derby After Joining Up With England
Wednesday, 21st Oct 2009 13:39

Striker Connor Wickham will miss Town’s games against Plymouth and Derby after joining up with the England squad for their UEFA European U17 Championships first qualifying round group games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Wickham has joined up with the squad late after coming on as a sub during last night’s 1-1 draw against Watford.

The England youngsters take on Kazakhstan on October 26th, the hosts two days later and Serbia on October 31st.

Earlier in the season, Wickham was pulled out of the England U17 squad playing in a friendly tournament in the Midlands to play in the games against Peterborough and Preston and last season Town withdrew him from an U16 party so he could make his senior debut against Doncaster.

Wickham has already won four caps at U17 level, scoring one goal, having played at the Nordic Tournament in Denmark in 2008 in which England annually field an U16 squad despite the competition being for the older age group.

England U17s: Benik Afobe (Arsenal), Ross Barkley (Everton), Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Luke Garbutt (Everton), Sam Johnstone (Manchester United), William Keane (Manchester United), Louis Laing (Sunderland), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Ravel Morrison (Manchester United), Bruno Pilatos (Middlesbrough), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), George Thorne (West Bromwich Albion), Tom Thorpe (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town), Luke Williams (Middlesbrough), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).

Good - this is not the right time for a youngster to come in. The one real issue I have with Keane is why he's not picking Priskin? Has to now - surely?

I think sometimes a team 'forced' on a Manager is a good thing... Bruce out injured = Wright coming back in (he was excellent last night).

Wickham away = Priskin having a run in the team... I think he just needs confidence, which a goal or two will add.

Probably because Priskin is appaling.

How do you know Priskin is appauling? Has he had a run in the side? Played a full game? Been passed the ball on the groun or even in the air? No.

If he fails to impress given at least a 3 / 4 game run then and only then can we say he is appauling!

Good luck Connor

As for Priskin, we have seen him and he did not impress!
Watford fans last night said they were happy he went as he was not that good with them!!
We are not on the training ground, so i would think Wickham is impressing more than Prisken and do not forget about Stead?

I think young Wickham has done well, having 30 mins here are there is not that much time to make a mark, but he has not done much wrong! He has had chances and they have all been on target, and the Keeper did his job!

If Priskin is so bloody good, how come Keane didn't pick him to play against his former club last night? Surely this game was made for Priskin to come on show what he could do against the club we signed him from, If any striker worth his salt still needs motivating to come on & score against his former employers then I think that shows that this player is just not up to it. He's not injured so how come Keane brought on a 16 yr old (Wickham) before considering Priskin?!
Maybe Keane now realises his own error in spending £1.7m on a him.
We don't have time to wait for Priskin to decide he might like to start playing, we need a quality striker now!

Was at the game last night, we were sooo unlucky, there was only 1 team in it, can't fault the effort given by any player last night. Keep going lads.
