McParland Joins Coaching Staff
McParland Joins Coaching Staff
Friday, 27th Nov 2009 10:29

Town have added former Notts County manager Ian McParland to their coaching staff. McParland left the Magpies last month after two years as boss.

Boss Roy Keane has been looking to add another coach to his staff for some while with Peter Taylor recently coming close to being offered a position.

Keane says McParland, known as Charlie, initially came to his attention on a coaching course: “I met Charlie first when I was on my Pro Licence and he’s a good man, which is important. He’s got his qualifications like a lot of coaches and I was keen on bringing a new face and new voice into the training ground.

“He’s somebody I believe I can trust and he’ll be working with the first team, very much hands on, and will be involved for the weekend.”

Former striker McParland, 48, played for Notts County, Hull City, Walsall, Dunfermline, Lincoln, Northampton, Chinese clubs Instant-Dict and Eastern AA, and Hamilton and Berwick in his native Scotland.

Prior to his spell as boss at Notts County, he was a coach at Keane's former club Nottingham Forest for 10 years.

Like the sound of this, especially as he's an ex-striker (although not at the higest level).

Also, very well travelled with a good knowledge of the Scottish and lower leagues, I would reckon. The issue with Keane only signing players he knows or recommended by those he trusts will be eased by this, as McParland will have a lot of knowledge of other players. He came out of the whole Notts County farce very well too, with a lot of credit. He seems to be a widely respected and admired fella. For me, this looks like the most significant signing since Keane joined.

So a new striker on loan, offered a deal to a young winger, added a first team coach. An encouraging week at Ipswich Town and I don't care how loud the usual morons shout.

Excellent appointment, well respected and apparently very much a player's man.
All in all, as SouperJim says above, an interesting and far from quiet week.

Good addition Roy well done .
Does anyone else think Roy has some massive trust issues in his comments? He has obviously been let down badly in the past ,Sunderlnd job ?
