Holland TWTD Player of the Decade
Holland TWTD Player of the Decade
Tuesday, 19th Jan 2010 12:23

Former skipper Matt Holland has won TWTD’s Player of the Decade Award after polling 34% of more than 800 votes cast. The midfielder beat Marcus Stewart into second place (23%) with Fabian Wilnis in third (13%).

Holland, who last night presented the BBC’s new Late Kick Off show for the first time, spent six years with Town between 1997 and 2003, skippering the side at Wembley in the 2000 play-off final and also during the UEFA Cup-qualifying season which followed.

You can see the full result of our best of the Player of the 2000s poll here. Our latest poll, which can be found on the front page of the site, asks which area of the side most needs strengthening during January.

RUBBISH!

Stewart should have won that hands down, you've all been sucked in by matty clapping everybody after the game.

Belstead why - the title is player of the decade - so maybe Wilnis should have won it for years of service but Stewart was player of the 1999-2001 era thats all - hats off and a very good player but by no means player of the decade.
Matty was formidable, the kinda of player that did nothing special but did his job and with that the team played with him. He was a captain and a worthy captain and I thank him for the years of service he provided and would love to have him back at the club in a role in the future

The right player won, although I did vote for Wilnis, he had to be top 3, absolute legend!

marcus stewart lol ok he was top english goalscorer for us in 1 season but he played in a team that played well after that 1 season i think he scored 10 goals? ok thats good for a relegated side but like someone else has mentioned he signed in february 2000 i think? and signed for sunderland in 2002 if im honest pablo has been a more worthy and a better servant and scored more goals so i think pabs should be second behind matty with wilnis third

I thought player of the decade meant just that, which means Wilnis, Magilton and Naylor qualify but Matt Holland was gone after 2003 and off form in 2002.

Looks like this descended into a popularity contest. On a performance basis Stewart is the easy winner, not Matt Holland.

I voted Magilton, player, Captain and Manager all in 9 years not someone who left for a budget fee three years into the decade.

Have to agree with this Matt Holland was a fantastic captian and was the lynch pin in a very good Ipswich side. I cannot believe some of the stick he gets from some of our so called supporters but reading some of the opinions on here I have to ask why I am surprised. Wilnis another legend would have been my second choice followed by De Vos all three were great servants to the club. Magilton should have also been in the running.

Steward while a terrific striker was not with us long enough to deserve the award. But he and Reuser were glamour players and therefore very popular but people answered the question of the poll which was not who was the most popular player of the decade but who was our best overall player.

Magilton ran the show even when he was fat & slow. Great vision, great pass, great organiser, not a bad manager (money put the pressure on when Marcus Evans stepped in) Hopefully one day Garvan will be as good (they have the same pace)

If Holland hadn't turned Villa down (4.5m if I remember correctly), would we have gone into administration?

Discuss.

Honourable mention should go to Bam Bam.

Loved watching the Leeds vs Manu game when he put Rooney on his arse and just walked off..

Matt Holland was a good shout even though he only played until 2003, dependable hard working, gave 100% for the team scored his fair share of goals,i was suprised Marcus Stewart came 2nd as he only had 1 decent season and was only at the club for a couple of seasons, i voted for Wilnis ive always liked him as a player and he did play for most of the noughties!!

Depends on your criteria. If longevity throughout the decade is one of the deciding factors, then this must rule out anyone who did not play for ITFC for perhaps five years during the decade - exit Holland, Stewart, Hreidarsson etc and enter Wilnis, Naylor (dare I say Counago - no I think not) and of course Magilton. Any stick that Holland gets is grossly unfair. He served this club fantastically in the years either side of the millenium and he would walk into any Ipswich team we have had since the early eighties. What would we have to pay now for a player of his calibre? Player of the decade (longevity & impact) would have to be Magilton closely followed by Wilnis. Best player to play for us during the decade - undoubtedly Matty Holland - hands down.

I'd be interested to see who was our top scorer for the decade and who made the most appearances, if anyone has the time to search. For quality Darren Bent is worth a shout , Stewie was a class apart but only for 18 months. Joe Royale deserves mention for being a fine manager - 2 play offs with a budget team

For comedy value, where was Mark Fish - having featured in one disaster strewn 45 minutes whilst on loan. Has there been a worse player of the decade???

Agree with utrechtblue about Joe Royle. I honestly believe that he saved this club from oblivion.
Unfortunately I can't take seriously a poll that puts Richard Naylor in the top 10 players of the decade.

Sereni?????? I've always thought he was our best player what with his inability to catch a football and not dive around like he's in a swimming pool at the olympics!!!

As for comparing Stewart to Pablo, Stewart had a fair better natural ability in finishing and movement. Pablo a great servant but you can't forget the season stewart had with us in the top flight. Fine he wasn't as prolific after that but the crux of that team had gone by the start of the following season. Without Stewarts 20+ goals that season, we certainly wouldn't have finished fifth!

As for Holland winning it, couldn't agree more.
