Reserves 2-2 Southend
Reserves 2-2 Southend
Wednesday, 20th Jan 2010 15:46

Tamás Priskin and Lee Martin (pen) netted as the Blues' second string drew 2-2 with Southend at Playford Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Town started the game brightly and in the first 15 minutes, Lee Martin and Reggie Lambe both saw shots saved, while Tamás Priskin also went close.

On 21 the Hungarian broke the deadlock when he headed home a Martin cross.

After the goal, Southend came more into it and in the 29th minute, a Bruce slip let in Scott Spencer, who equalised.

The Shrimpers went in front in the 38th minute when Jamie Dennis's low shot beat keeper Ian McLoughlin.

Town gradually took more and more control of the game as the second half wore on.

In the 84th minute, with the Blues keeping the visitors under pressure, Martin was bundled over inside the area and converted the spotkick himself.

Town should really have won the game, having had most of the chances. Southend scored with two of their rarer opportunities.

Strike pair Martin and Priskin were lively throughout but were not clinical enough, often overplaying in and around the area.

The returning Ben Thatcher did well at left-back in the first half, as did Shane O’Connor, who replaced him at the break in what looked like a pre-planned substitution. Both players have been out with knee ligament injuries.

Ed Upson and Jack Ainsley were also impressive in what was an unusually full-blooded reserves encounter with Alan Quinn and Alex Bruce particularly committed.

Reserves: McLoughlin, Ainsley, Brown, Bruce, Thatcher (O'Connor 46), Lambe, Upson, Quinn, Brandon (Lavery 63), Priskin, Martin. Unused: Ranieri, McKeown.

Thanks to Andy Pearl for the report.

See Tamas, you do know how to put the ball in the back of the net.

Well done you special little guy.

Just back from the game, Priskin and Martin were both excellent this afternoon. It's just a matter of time before they start to contribute to the first team.

Glad to see Priskin and Martin both netted. Should help with their confidence. Hope they come back strong and silence the PR boo boys.

I wonder if Thatcher's inclusion was due to the way Keane criticised him the other day. Perhaps it's motivated him to prove Keane wrong?

Well we didn't win but didn't lose (pretty much sums up our season so far!)

Glad to see Priskin on the score sheet, but concerned at the "not clinical enough" comment. Good for confidence but needs to be included in the first team squad for him to get back to the form that I know he can produce.

Did he do enough to impress RK? Only time will tell.

parkinshair - While I'm happy to see that they've both found the back of the net, you can't say the "boo boys" have been entirely unfair. I gave Priskin more time than most but every game I saw him play in at the start of the season (and I've only missed 4 home games this season due to unavoidable appointments) he seemed lacklustre and...well plain lazy. Like Berbatov but without the return in goals. You can't get on fans backs for getting frustrated especially when you consider how much we paid Watford for him.

That being said if he's starting to come good, earns himself a place in the first team and starts banging them in then I'll be bloody happy - he scored 16 in all competitions for Watford last season so there's no denying there's some talent there! :)

I saw the first half only as I was only on my lunch break from work so can't comment on the second.
Until the Bruce slip it was completely one way traffic with Town in possession looking quick, sharp and dangerous around the box. No word of a lie Priskin should have scored 4.......I like him and his style but he's lost all his confidence in front of goal. Martin was class until he got near goal aswell. Bruce looked strong and hungry, apart from the slip looked good.
With the players on view this afternoon we should of hammered Southend but huffed and puffed without being clinical enough.......Im sure I've said that already this season?????

woohoo. The £1.8m and £1m players managed to score against a second rate second string side. Lets all celebrate and say they deserve a place in the first team ! What garbage ! ... oh and one of those was from 12 yards with just the keeper to beat

"Like Berbatov but without the return in goals" - Because Berbatov is so prolific isn't he!

Errr, Am I missing the point! A near full strength team of our fringe players against a division one reserve team full of youngsters and journeymen. If our players were playing for a first team place and were good enough, we should have taken them to the cleaners and thrashed them!

Matt the Blue - I see your point but no matter how fustrating, booing players is certainly not going to help the situation. The last time I saw Priskin he was having abuse yelled at him before he had even kicked a ball in earnest.

I understand that supporters pay their money and they are entitled to their opinion. But I can not condone booing of any players in a town shirt. Other supporters have paid their money so why spoil the atmosphere for them. Booin just doesn't help. It lowers confidence and gives the oppositon a lift. Bottom line Priskin has not been given a chance to shine so to judge on such a small amount of games is pathetic.

We had 70 % possession and had alot more chances but didnt put them away. ity should have been men against boys but it wasnt , we were 2-1 down and looking like losing until the lightweight went over for a pen .

Priskin missed 2 or 3 one on ones , one well over the bar and another the goalie saved well. I think there was another , not sure now , and that went straight at the goalie. The goal he got was a simple header from matrtins cross aboyut 3 yards out if that. He could have got 5 on the day but is either useless or has zero confidence. Yes fans are having a go because he "looks" so lazy and that was from day one in a blue shirt. He h really hasnt endeared himself to fans

Martin was all tricks and flicks , most not coming off. Also pushed off the ball to easily so nothing has changed. On paper I thought both would be entertaining top players for us but so far its never happened, and martin is on a 4 or 5 years contract !

Bruce was committed and plyed very well bar one slip that did cost a goal mind you.
Upson was decent , and quinn was probably our MOTM . The rest were very average .

Cant see any bar quinn getting near the first team squad .

One positive about Priskin --he does get into scoring positions regularly then fluffs his lines . Its a real shame because I feel deep down he could be decent at this level , same with Martin if bulked up.

Forgot to mention Thatcher.

he did ok and looked fit enough and also put his back into it so maybe the fallout isnt as bad as we are lead to believe.

Although it seems that Priskin "fluffed his lines" (nice turn of phrase), we have to be encouraged that he was getting into scoring positions. We have to remember, his chances in the first team came during a period when the whole team was struggling and that put on added pressure when chances came along as they were at such a premium. At the moment, we are creating a decent amount of chances and if he is given the opportunity, I expect he would bag a few goals at first team level too. I am very surprised that he has not at least been on the bench during Stead's absence but it is difficult to question Keane's selection when we have had two wins and a good away draw. I hope he gets a game soon, he has got something to prove to all ITFC fans. As for Martin, no doubt he has skill but he has been an even bigger disappointment than Priskin. I cannot see where he fits in any more. The midfield would seem to be coming together and there is plenty of competition for places in that area and I cannot see him as an out and out striker. It will be interesting to see how Keane deploys him between now and the end of the season. Finally, got to agree with those who cannot accept fans booing their own players. The likes of Priskin know that things haven't gone well and do not need their own supporters booing. If they are wearing a blue shirt and representing ITFC we should give them all the support and encouragement we can whilst they are on the pitch.

Priskin remains a worry for me. I trust Keano completely and think Priskin is letting him down badly. I think he's lost all confidence, but it was fragile if that's the case. He needs to be getting hat tricks against southend, and the tone of the article suggests he's some way from being a goal scorer we can rely on. Keep him in the reserves, till he's banging them in again naturally. If not, cut losses and sell!
