German Keeper on Trial With Town
German Keeper on Trial With Town
Thursday, 28th Jan 2010 12:08

German goalkeeper Jonas Sela has returned to Town for a second trial more than two years after his previous spell at the club. The 26-year-old, who was last here in October 2007, has been back with the Blues since last week after Town asked his club SpVgg Weiden if they could take another look at him.

Sela is currently the second choice keeper at Weiden, having lost his place earlier in the season after a run in which he conceded 16 goals in four games for the Regionalliga Süd (fourth tier of German football) side.

The 6ft 2½in tall keeper played youth football with FC Köln, TV Herkenrath, SSG Bergisch Gladbach and RS 19 Waldbröl before joining Arminia Bielefeld in 2003, where he played for their reserves.

A year later the Bensburg-born stopper moved to Fortuna Köln and in the summer of 2005 he switched to Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05, where he spent two seasons but made only one seven-minute substitute appearance in the German top flight.

After his unsuccessful trial with the Blues in 2007, Sela spent a similar spell at Brighton but eventually joined Dutch Eerste Divisie (second tier) club MVV Maastricht, before moving on to SpVgg Bayreuth in the Oberliga Bayern (German fifth tier) and then his current club.

Back in 2007, Sela was recommended by former England striker Tony Woodcock, who is now an agent in Germany and who previously represented former Blue Danny Sonner.

Town boss Roy Keane has said on a number of occasions that he likes to have three goalkeepers in his squad and, with Richard Wright out for most of the season with his knee ligament injury, is likely to be looking at cover for Arran Lee-Barrett and Brian Murphy. The Irishman’s ankle problem is not expected to keep him out for too much longer.

In December, former Austrian U21 international keeper Michael Langer, who currently plays in Germany with SC Freiburg, spent time on trial with the Blues but failed to win a contract.

Couldn't get a contract when we needed a keeper, couldn't get one at Brighton or any other English clubs and is now/was playing division 4 German footall/Div 2 Dutch - sounds a total catch, can't think why we didn't sign him last time round. Sure there is much more too it, but sounds very odd to me.

Thanks but no thanks. Funny he is recommended by a chap who is now an agent, no chance he could be his agent is there!

WTF!!! Conceding 16 goals in 4 games- sounds like a disaster. Are we allowed to play Ranieri in the 1st team or is his loan just for the U18s? he looked useful against Arsenal. OK, it was just a youth team but he seemed pretty solid.

Surely we should be looking at an established keeper on loan from the Prem?

Somebody go and drag Supple back over here.

This sounds deeply pointless. We already have five keepers if you include McLoughlin (who has been sitting on the bench very nicely) and Ranieri.

Maybe Keane just likes shouting "Spielvereinigung Bayreuth!" (I wonder if Keene likes Wagner.)

Wow what a catch! He must have slipped under Ancelotti's and Mancini's radar!

When has beens like Kibane do not want to come here to help out. Is this the sort of dross we are left with trying to attract?

WHY WHY WHY... im not convinced by Keane's signings! and if we get this keeper then you can add another to the list.

i doubt Keane will be here next season anyway, its been a total disaster since his been here.

Thought we were supposed to get promoted Mr Evans (whoever you are, still yet to show your face)

I played in goal at junior school when I was only 9 . Do you think it is worth me applying for the role?. This club is fast becoming a laughing stock .

you guys are so harsh......lee-barrett was playing 5/6th tier of english game not that long ago???!!!.....football is a funny old game and he just may have not had the rub of the green...

Candyshop behave... I think even the glorious faithful can see this story as a bit of a damp squib and if true, just bizarre! Like all the "signings" and "links" I read on TWTD 95% of them are just utter tosh and I serioulsy doubt this will be different, but it's hardly an expected/needed/high profile/confidence building/inspired story is it?!?!? As I said earlier there is probably much more to this than meets the eye if indeed true, but it's still straw clutching ain't it and I for one have immediatly though - why bother?????

pagey69 this is another little story without any truth in it.

I totally agree he isn't needed.....but i'm purely stating lee-barrett was out of the league not that long ago.....just because a footballer has been playing a few levels down, doesn't mean they are crap.

Guys come on Keane likes to have 3 keepers and why not doesnt mean he's going to rotate them does it!, most teams have 3 goal keepers. So Lee Barrett, Murphy and this new guy - Wright will be let go in the summer, he's 32 and past his best

ottovonbismark added 16:11 - Jan 28
this has to be some sort of wind up - as far as a scouting network goes ours must be the worst around - why oh why are we looking at this guy if he wasn't good enough 2 years ago and has been floundering around the lower reaches of german football ever since? Roy what are you doing?

This is quite funny. OK, as many have said, chances are that its just paper talk, but you still have to laugh. I remember not so long ago, being linked to the likes of Charisteas and Mpenza - Ok, admittedly they were just rumours too, but it seems that even the transfer rumours have gone downhill since Keane has been here. lol
