Keane: No Decision on Stern
Keane: No Decision on Stern
Friday, 29th Jan 2010 10:39

Boss Roy Keane says no decision has yet been made on whether Crystal Palace striker Stern John will extend his spell with the Blues. The Town manager also confirmed that German keeper Jonas Sela had spent last week on trial at Playford Road, as first reported by TWTD yesterday, and revealed that he had received enquiries regarding members of his first team squad.

Keane says that contrary to reports in south London yesterday, a decision will be made on the Trinidadian after Saturday’s match: “I’ve not really spoken to Stern since the game the other night. Obviously he’s due to have his last game with us tomorrow, he’ll certainly be training with us today, he’ll be in the squad and we’ll wait and see.

“But we’ve not officially made any decision and things can change. If one or two of our other strikers leave, then Stern would certainly be staying.”

Keane says the situation with Palace going into administration doesn’t alter the position: “They’ll still have people running the club, they’ll still look for fees, loan fees or wages to be covered. Nothing has changed on that side of it.

“There’s been no change on the Stern situation. We’ll probably sleep on it over the next 24 hours and the first person we’ll inform will be Stern. We’ll let you know tomorrow night what we’re going to do.”

Keane says that with the transfer window closing on Monday, he has made enquiries for players and he has received interest from clubs for some of his squad: “It’s very quiet but there may be some action over the next few days. We still have until Monday.

“There are plenty of enquiries going on for players we might be interested in bringing to the club and we’ve had a few over the last few days for some of our lads. So it could be a busy few days.

“We’ve got a chief executive who has his eye on our money and I’ll step back from it over the weekend. Obviously if we get an opportunity to speak to the one or two players we’re interested in we’ve got Sunday and Monday to do that.”

The Blues boss says there has been interest in some of his senior players, potential moves which he has not ruled out: “The one or two players that might go out have very much been involved in the first team. We’ll inform the players if those enquiries are followed up.

“I got a phone call at half-eight from a manager last night which took me by surprise. I was very surprised. You don’t know what might happen.”

Keane says that every player has his price: “If a Premiership club offers me £5 million for one of my players I might consider it. You don’t know.

“Things change and a lot can happen over the weekend. There might be no enquiries. That manager rang me last night and asked if we could do something. The ball’s in his court. If he wants to make an offer, he’ll make an offer.”

Keane says German keeper Jonas Sela, who we reported was on trial yesterday, did well but is just one of a number of glovesmen to have been given a try-out: “He did OK. I’ve spoken to James Hollman. We need to look at our goalkeeping situation. He did reasonably well but I usually leave it up to the goalkeeping coach what he wants to do with them.

“We have goalkeepers coming in all the time, there are plenty of goalkeepers out there and we have no problem with them coming in.

“We’re still short of keepers with Brian Murphy out injured. We’re constantly looking at goalkeepers.”

Keane says that the deal to sign free agent 19-year-old American trialist Devann Yao is still not complete but could be done by Monday. The club have been working through red tape relating to compensation due to some of the clubs — Metz, Livorno, Pisa and St Mirren — that he was with as a youngster.

The Blues boss was impressed with his performance in the 0-0 reserves draw with Brentford on Wednesday: “He played the other day and he did very, very well but he’s still not officially signed for us.

“He’s a talented boy, he’s got a good attitude, good energy levels. He had a bleep test last week and considering he’s been out injured [with a bad cut to the calf] it was very, very good. He’s good at dealing with the ball, he’s aggressive. He’s a good player.

“He plays wide but like any decent wideman he come inside and he’s comfortable with the ball. We felt the boy deserved an opportunity at least until the end of the season and that contract will have to be sorted.”

Town have no new injuries but Brian Murphy is still out for around another week due to the ankle injury he suffered in the warm-up at Leicester. Skipper Jon Walters also misses out with his hamstring injury.

What's most disappointing about this transfer window is that we have not had an approach from another Club for Mr Keane himself!!

FAO Dissblue.
a bleep test/shuttle runs is a test of fitness, you run between to markers (20 mtrs apart) and you have to make the the marker before the "bleep" the bleeps get progressively quicker.

Given who we wuold be in competition with, I'd be more confident of getting Victor Meldrew rather than Victor Moses! Seriously, a young ambitious lad like that would surely prefer to be playing in front of 50,000 at StJamesPark.com/sillystadiumname (or whatever its called) and probably in the Prem, rather than 19-20,000 at our beloved Portman Road, probably in the Champo for another season at least ... but you never know. Keano has a lot of contacts in football, and may well be able to swing a nice deal.

In other words if we loose pabs and priskin and don't get replacements we keep john. That's why he's being held on to. I still can not get my head round this potential gk from Germany. I guess in reality the squad we have is the one were going to have to stick with as I can not see anyone significant coming in.

Oh no ! Keano that's the sort of thing we would have expected Magic to say , Stern (as in big rear end that moves slowly) John is just another old journeyman , you were quick to offload a far better prospect in Rhodes , who you probably couldnt afford to buy back now after spunking £ 2 mill' on Priskin , dont lose your cred ' Roy or you'll never get it back !

I'm sorry but some Ipswich fans are a joke this season we have been unlucky without late goals we would be in 8th position but i suppose thats wouldn't be good enough for some people. Yes he has bought poorly in some areas with healy, priskin hasn't got going, martin has been out injured but we havn't seen his true potential. Priskin needs a chance a run of games, is came when we were playing poorly nd if i was Keane i would give him a kick up the behind and say prove your worth to me, keane has also bought well with Leadbitter and Delaney who is keeping alex bruce out of the side. The dip in form of Mcaualy at the start of the season has been turned around and the rise of jamie peters and jack colback, you ipswich fans dont look at this sometimes. Rosenior has been playing very well, Stead has started to score goals again, stick with Keane as i believe he cares about the club obviously he has made a few funny buys but also made some very good buys and loan deals ou can't get everything right even Sir Alex bought poorly with djemba djemba, Kleberson but you didnt see man united fans wanting him out did you, stick with RK and losing once in 16 matches i know we have had many draws but we are proving a hard team to beat.

'finidigeorge88' - I would rather be in Div. 2 WITHOUT Keane, than in the Champions League with him! For me it is not about whether we are promoted or relegated, it's Keane's character that I question. Let's not forget that this is a man who tried to break the legs of a fellow profressional and walked away from the service of his country. These are not the high ideals of sport to which ITFC are associated.

@FinidiGeorge88... I take it your 22 and dont even remember when Sir Alex got his current job, I do. What you are comparing is awful, a man who in all those years has found bargin after bargin and you pick out two that didnt work out. When Keane was at Sunderland he spent over 80 million pounds, 80 million. Now who did he spend that on and which of them are keeping Sunderland up now. Did he spend it on their top scorer or their key holding midfield player... or did they arrive afterwards??? I think you will find Bruce brought them in. Keane had a minimum success with the Black Cats at best but for what he spent he should have had a lot lot more, he found one or two good deals, but wasted a whole lot of money.

Now at Town, yes Rosenior and Leadbitter were good buys and Begervic was a decent loan, but again he has wasted a lot of money. Martin, Priskin, and Healey have ll failed to make the grade, John who was only on loan but a fee and wages were involved has failed and the verdict is still out on some others. Delaney and been lucky, brought as a left back where he failed he has passed ok at best as a center half, but was he better than what we had??? He has no distribution and makes lot of mistakes, lately the goal at Leicster was one of his shockers air kicking the ball.

Keane with money is dangerous and its shocking how after all these bad deals everyone thinks the next man through the door will be our saviour, chances are unless he buys three or four players it wont be, because he needs to buy three or four to get one good one. But none of this is as shocking as you comparing what he has done hear to Sir Alex one or two flops in 20 years.

A load of rubbish from FinidiGeorge88, but what else can be expected by someone who thought HE (FG) was a asset to us..sounds like a ra-ra girl for the staus quo(whatever it may be at the present) is he related to Gary Neville? Maybe he is after a job?

bluepirate - First of all, it's nice to see someone putting a reasonable anti-keane argument across, rather than just "he's a thug". I disagree with some of your points though. Yes Keane spent way over the odds at Sunderland, but he is learning. Benitez has brought some ridiculous players for ridiculous funds in his time. I think it was a similar thing to Jim. Keane was given far too much money for a manager of his inexperience. I agree that Martin has looked a waste of money so far, but Priskin DOES have talent, it's just his attitude which appears to be the problem. Some of the goals he scored at Watford were superb. If we get him playing right he will be well worth the £1.7 million spent. Healy — again it hasn't worked out, but for only £70,000 it was a gamble well worth taking. Leadbitter is fantastic. Edwards has been disappointing though. Although Delaney still makes mistakes, what centre back doesn't? It is only because he was so poor earlier on in the season that people are so quick to get on his back. A lot of people seem to be waiting to pounce on him for any mistake. What about the shots he has cleared off the line in recent games?? He is part of the strongest centre back partnership we have had since the Burley days.
