Sunderland Striker Again Close to Town Move
Sunderland Striker Again Close to Town Move
Sunday, 31st Jan 2010 22:58

Town are once again close to signing Sunderland striker or left midfielder Daryl Murphy. The 26-year-old, who played under Roy Keane at the Stadium of Light, almost joined the Blues in the summer, even passing a medical before the move broke down.

Personal terms and interest from Premier League Hull City led to the switch collapsing after a fee of £1.5 million rising to £2.5 million had been agreed with Sunderland for the former Waterford United man, who had several spells on trial with the Blues in the 2004/05 season before signing for the Black Cats.

However, the potential move has resurfaced on a number of occasions during the following months and it’s little surprise that Murphy is again being targeted by the Blues.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or wide player will sign on loan for the rest of the season before the transfer window closes at 5pm on Monday with a view to the switch being made permanent in the summer.

Murphy, who is contracted to Sunderland until 2012, has made four starts and three sub appearances for the Black Cats this season without scoring, appearing most recently in the 7-2 defeat to Chelsea earlier this month.

Coincidentally, the Irish international played youth football with recent Town signing the unrelated Brian Murphy when they were growing up in their home town of Waterford.

Can't be any worse than the strikers we have.

Would rather have Chopra, but I think he could do a job for us. Hope we bring someone (or both - Yeah I can dream) before the window closes!

ok for wide left but not an out and out goal getter

our problem is not taking our chances, the solution is to either get someone in to finish those chances or simply to create more. dont really know much about murphy but if he can be a target man or wide player, creating chances, he could very well be the man to help us put to bed ears of relegation. chopra would be ideal but i think its very, very unlikely he'll sign.

I read that Roy Keane has been on the phone to Cardiff. However it wasn't about Chopra. So maybe its going to be Bothroyd or McCormack that we get...

I don't care who we sign provided that he can score 10+ goals between now and the end of the season and can beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation.

NO! NO! NO! Not this mug, his goals to games ratio is terrible! We need an out and out goal getter, we have Strikers that can get get 10 or 12 on a regular basis but not a quick Striker who can create and score. When we go forward it is our lack of pace which is one of our big problems. Murphy ain't the answer. I am hoping this is his agent creating the story to try and drum some interest up.
Chopra would be good for his goals, no doubt. But someone in the mould of Simeon Jackson at Gills could be worth a gamble. Do Wigan intend to play Victor Moses from the start? If not then he would do a job for us on loan until the end of the season? Please not Murphy!

I'd actually suggest we need a target man just as much as a goalscorer

Our ability to hold the ball up in the final third has been dreadful

Murphy off the left wing could be handy also, it would give a better balance more physicality especially from set pieces

Not unlike having a left footed Jonathan Walters really

On loan, OK. If we get relegated, we don't want his wages on the books. And make him work for a contract. Can we also have Halmosi on loan (to give us a better option on the left)? And how about Caleb Folan?

i think we should make an offer for Grant Holt, just to p### off the canaries!

Come on Marcus, pull your finger out and slap 3 million down for Chopra. Cardiff are broke, have the tax man breathing down their necks, they would surely bite our hands off?

Would be a good signing to play WIDE LEFT. We need the width.

With Walters on the right and Norris/Leadbitter in the middle that would be a good midfield.

WE NEED WIDTH!!

I agree that wide left this could be a good short term sollution but there better be another signing of a striker! Chopra is a dream but I think thats all, we need someone and it needs to be done soon Keano, WAKE UP!

Blueblood, I have to agree with you. Make the offer and sell Priskin to Rangers for 1.? mill.

We need a known goal scorer, cant afford to take a "punt" on someone from the lower leagues.

blueblood unfortunately even if Cardiff did bite our hands off the player still has to agree to come and we are looking less and less attractive a proposition as the season goes on

Jackson has to be worth a punt - he has confidence , scores goals - people say we want a BIG NAME??? ..eerrr I love our club but we are battling relegation from the championship, how many BIG names are gonna be motivated scrapping it out - we would just end up with overpaid 'big names' , rather get a hungry kid who wants to improve

Sky Sports News - "Keane has cleared the way to bring Murphy to Portman by agreeing to loan out Tamas Priskin to Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers." Surely Murhy is in for wide left, with a striker still to join? Keano, please have another card up your sleeve. Please!

Oh dear! Why do I feel underwhelmed? Let's hope Roy knows what he's doing on this one. DM hardly shone against Chelski, but then I suppose that's not a fair match in which to judge him. Trouble is, I don't feel he's shone much anywhere else either. It's an out-and-out goal-getter we need, but then, as we all know, they don't grow on trees, do they? We should all take a reality check and remember they are just not that easy to come by. But if DM arrives, I'll give him my full support and hope the poor lad doesn't suffer what Priskin has had to endure. (Priskin will come good sometime, somewhere, by the way - hope it's with us.)
