Keane: An Important Win
Keane: An Important Win
Wednesday, 10th Feb 2010 02:05

Boss Roy Keane felt Tuesday night’s win at QPR was an important one as the Blues move into a period of four away games on the trot.

Keane said: “It was an important night for us. Obviously we should have done better in terms of killing the game off but I have to be pleased, in the end we got the win.

"We were at it in the first half. We had two or three other chances and at 2-0 we were actually a bit disappointed.

"We knew QPR would come out in the second half and they caused us problems, but we haven't had that many victories. So it's not a night to be critical because we got the result.

"It was a very important three points, especially with the run of away games we have coming up.

"The full-backs did well, Jaime Peters and Jack. We felt they could get at QPR and there were a lot of positives to take from the 90 minutes.

"Murph got another goal, and could have had another one. Pablo worked well up front and, although we had some anxious moments at the end, I can't be critical of my players because it was a big win for us."

QPR manager Mick Harford blasted his side’s first half display: "For a professional club, that first half performance was not acceptable.

"It was totally inept, lacking everything. Lacking effort, lacking commitment. Ipswich should have been out of sight, they had chance after chance and carved us open.

"We played better in the second half but that doesn't really bother me at the moment. At half-time I told them the fans were right to boo.

“I asked them if everyone was up for the fight, a rallying call for more effort and commitment. The players now know they are in a relegation fight."

Big big win despite makning it difficult for ourselves towards the end. QPR were awful with their first half display being up their with the worst perfomances since I've been watching town. Couple of points from the night:

1) Why has colback got rid of his ginger locks - being a fellow red head I was quite disheartened by this act. Quality perfomance though - he has class written all over him

2) Why do our fans chant EA-SY after scoring a goal. It's an embarrassingly crap chant and from experience, it has always bitten us on the arse by the end of the match.

Bring on Peterborough

I can't believe Colback has shaved his hair off, he was supposed to be the token gingbag of the team!

Obviously a mega important win for us! And glad of the three points, but still I agree, we did make it difficult! I only managed to listen to it on some BBC London station (with some awful commentary...They missed how long was added on at the end AND left a TV on during the minutes silence... ) And we should have / could have scored about 4 in the first half.
Give our new strike force a few games and I think we might start putting away more of our chances, instead of the 2 in 10 like we are at the moment. Hopefully.

CYOB!

I'm with the "Colback grow your hair back" brigade. As a fellow ginge he should wear it proud.

A really good performance last night. Stand-out man- Leadbitter. Utter class.

Well done lads! Pity the teams around us got points too, but if we can get a few more wins over the next few games we WILL climb that table again. How tight is it???

COYB!!!!!

prepare for a very, very, very nerve wracking end to this season. If we'd drawn last night instead of the win we'd be buried in the bottom 3 again. Draws are not enough.
IMO 13 teams are in the fight to avoid relegation and I'm afraid we're not favourites to stay up. We cannot continue to miss chances, we've already lost between 15-18 points because we've defended poorly at the end of a game or that we've squandered chances to win games (Norris' miss last night to put the game away was another).
I hope Roy has them on the training ground first thing this morning and every morning until next Tuesday just taking shots and instilling confidence in them that they can avoid the drop.
COYB!!

It was very worrying that we nearly threw it away in the second half seeing as we should have been 4-0 at half-time having missed 2 open goals.... but they dug in and ground out the win, hopefully this will boost the confidence levels which are clearly very low as last night's second half showed.

2) not sure where you were but where I was there was no 'easy' chants!

Nervous nineties as usual, but very please with the result.

PS liked the 'I am East Anglian' chant - nice work

A really important win. Some of the other teams around us are also putting a bit of a run together, e.g. Derby & Sheff W.

We must keep it going at Peterborough and take some confidence into the SWed game.

I must say I raised an eyebrow when I saw the team selection but Colback and Peters did OK. As an attacking option, it was a masterstroke, but I did wonder whether their relative lack of experience in those positions allowed QPR to come back into it in the 2 period.

No complaints though. Bring on the Posh!

svendust are you telling me that if you had ginger hair you wouldn't shave it off?

Agree with most comments, thought Peters played well and still in with a chance for play offs.

Colback's eye sight isnt good, and been looking in on here apparently, and thought it was gingers getting slagged off instead of whingers. [allegedly]

Where are all the Keane boo boys?

Great win last night but I totally agree with stiffshirts. The rest of the season is going to beon a knife edge. With teams around us winning and coming good (at the wrong time for us) we have to turn draws into wins. This has always been a tight league and if we can grind out results over the next 3 away games we can really move up the table.

But lets enjoy the win, and then bring on the posh.

Last night's first half performance was spot on and I thought that we looked okay in the second half until Keane made the two subs. After that we lost a bit of our shape and gave QPR all the width. It was a nail biting end, but it would have been hard on us not to have taken all three points!

Unfortunately, I don't get the chance to go to many games, so, from the South Africa Road stand at Loftus Road - an assessment of the players in last night's game:

Lee-Barratt - solid game, but QPR gave him very little to do. Missed one or two high balls, but show me a keeper who doesn't...
Peters - adequate makeshift right back, and later left back. At fault for the goal (hesitated when he had a chance to clear) and given a tough time by Taraabt. We need to see him further up the pitch, where he did his best work last night.
Colback - did surprisingly well at left back, but if QPR still had Routledge might have struggled. Another makeshift full-back and not a long term solution - needed his workrate in midfield when under pressure in the last half-hour.
Delaney - awesome display; won everything in the air, made some vital interceptions and last-ditch tackles, and threw himself into blocks when necessary. Distribution from the back was for the most part excellent too.
McAuley - see Delaney! Plus, soldiered on after a nasty-looking clash of heads, despite looking like he'd gone 10 rounds with a heavyweight when he stood up. (Pablo, take note - See below)
Leadbitter - hardworking defensive performance, and very composed in possession. Whenever the game turned into a game of head tennis, he was the one player on the pitch always looking to bring it down and play. Class act.
Norris - Typical hardworking display, and took his goal very well. Other than the goal, seemed to offer the most attacking threat from central midfield - perhaps he should play further forward, with Leadbitter anchoring midfield.
Walters - Very quiet game. Showed little going forward, and would have liked to have seen a bit more from him defensively when we were being opened up down QPR's left in the 2nd half. Maybe still not fully recovered from his injury?
Garvan - Very quiet game as a makeshift left-midfielder. Kept possession well when he had the ball, but as a wide-man, is never going to take players on and beat them. Nice to see a bit of extra workrate from him this season though.
Murphy - excellent all round display. Up for the physical battle against QPRs centre backs, brought other players into the game well, and an intelligent late run into the box for his goal. Needs to sharpen his first touch a little, but that might be down to a lack of games - shame we didn't sign him in the summer!
Counago - put in a good shift, and held the ball up well UNTIL QPR started to rough him up a little. After that he seemed more interested in contesting every decision, and finding even more cotton-wool to stick up his nose...might have to finally accept that we can only rely on him with more "ref protection" at home.
Rosenior - coped a little better with Taraabt than Peters, but still got shown up a few times. Seemed an odd decision that he didn't start the match though...
Healy - looked rusty when he came on; showed glimpses that there's a good player in there (one great cross) but seemed quite a way off the pace of the game

Roy Keane - A couple of odd selections at full-back, but the players functioned well as a team last night (although they benefitted from an awful 1st half display from QPR). Lots of hard work when we didn't have the ball, but, once again, we need to be more clinical in front of goal. Created some great chances in the 1st half, and going in at 3-0 or 4-0 wouldn't have flattered us. For the second time in a week, RK made a substitution when we were defending a set-piece. A basic management error, and in both cases we conceded a goal; last night it gave QPR confidence that they had no right to, and put us under extra pressure for the last half hour.

So, job done; 3 points from the first of our 4 games on the road, but we'll be VERY lucky if any the 3 teams we play next put in a performance as clueless and gutless as QPR did in the 1st half yesterday...

A quick QPR footnote - Taraabt gave us quite a few headaches when he came on. If he can learn that it's not illegal to occasionally pass a ball quickly when he receives it, and that when he takes on a player and beats him, he doesn't have go back and take the mick by beating him again, there might be a hell of a player in there somewhere!

Its going to be like that bit in the Deerhunter when they are playing Russian Roulette until the end of the season with 8 other clubs. Phil...can you get a better picture of Roy than than that one you used at the top. He looks like he has come round your house to ask if he could tarmac your drive.

i'm a keane boo boy and i'm delighted they won but i still think town should never have been involved in a relegation battle this season after last season when they just missed out on the playoffs.last years team won 2'_3 games 4 roy hi s own team has hardly won that many in 26 games the bloke is useless

Good, and much needed win.
But i'm still a keane boo-boy. Yet again his subs and tactics changes have led to our own problems. He isn't good enough and don't think he knows his best team.
And from what is being said, we excelled against one of the worst performances of the season, bit as soon as qpr got their act together, we struggled. Still a long way to go, and keane isn't good enough to get us where we should be with the players we have.
