Town Win Family Football Gong
Town Win Family Football Gong
Wednesday, 10th Feb 2010 19:20

The Blues have been awarded The Football League Family Excellence Award for the third successive season. The Blues are amongst 17 sides to have won the award every year since its inception in 2007, while 20 other clubs have been given the award this year.

This gong recognises the matchday experience provided for young fans and families based on an independent assessment of all 72 League clubs.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg, who travelled to the QPR game on an official supporters’ coach, said: “Ipswich Town prides itself on being a friendly, welcoming family club and the award is further recognition of that.”

Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney added: “The Football League Family Excellence Award provides a benchmark for clubs to work towards and ensures that they are doing all they can to attract and retain family groups as supporters. League clubs are working hard to make the family experience the best it can be.”

What a terrible thing to win. It's because of this "nice club" image that teams and referee's feel they can walk all over us when they come to Portman Road.

How can anyone afford to take a whole family to the games with our ticket prices?!

Oh god, I can't think of any supporter other than maybe middle class mums of small children who would be happy about winning this. It hardly promotes an image of passionate town fans when we win awards for being a club where you can enjoy a pleasant day out with the family at portman road. However saying this, it's ultimately down to supporters at the games to determine whether we become this 'nice', 'pleasant' club or if we become a set of fans renowned for their passion and love of Ipswich town.

Obviously the northernblue feels that passion and love of the club is exculsive to over 18's? Where do you think the clubs future support comes from, or would you rather the fan base was over 18 only? How old were you when you first went to a game? I'm glad there is someway of recognising that there is somewhere at the ground where youngsters can be introduced to the ups and downs of supporting ITFC which is a pleasant and nice place to be - quite when pleasant and nice became bad things I don't know. I'm hoping to take my 5 year old to his first game this year, and hope he'll love the club as much as me and feel the same passion for the game I do.

yes that fair points but i'd rather win an award for having the most fanatical fans, but most places have friendly areas for family areas,
but the connation of a family friendly ground is where very few people show the level of passion they have and people can sit down with fine food such as sandwiches and watch the game in silence, that is not the kind of support i want.
im not saying family friendly means that, but its what i'd think of if someone said it to me.
and blue bob, i hope your kid loves it as much as i did when i first went :)

Buy season tickets, i think kids ones start from 11 quid, also the club regularly offers discounts in the family areas.

Does this mean that Section 6 are only paying £11 a season?

Agree with the first post - this angers me - I want a West Ham fan base - rock hard loyal never say die attitude!! be great for the whole ground to sing, but it will never happen because we are too much of a nice family club - frustrating!!

tractoyroyno.1 despite what you think were not jst a bunch of pissed kids.
i have to pay up to 28.50 for most games now, so to be honest i think it is a rip off at ipswich, the second you get to the age of 16 where they upgrade you to an adult, with no student prices in lower north.
and bleed blue i like your attitude sing your heart out and the few of us who do can at least try to make a difference and not try to be the quitest ground in the country

Would you rather have a club which is family friendly with crowds full of kids and elderly people, or a club with a crowd which sing loud and proud, and scare the other team's players?

Sorry but at time's the atmosphere in portman road is shameful. "Supporter's" should not think that turning up to a game, sitting down and just clapping is enough to get behind the team. This family award in my opinion is just a sign of how bad things have got.

Commmets are, as ever, genius! I have to say I'm massively impressed and applaude (part sarcastic) those that have managed to find the negative in this one! Everyone is saying nicey nicey gets no atmosphere or respect etc but lets be honest that is the biggest pile of #@!> posted all season! Are people honestly trying to say that because we get an award for providing a pleasant environment for a family to come then it means people think we are a push over etc?! That may be true if your planning the next riot against Milwall or West Ham but largely speaking no other fan/clubs are going to take much notice! Do you honestly think Middlesborough came along and went 'these guys are going to be a pushover - they have won awards for being a great family club the last couple of years!' If they have that thought it will be based upon the performances on the pitch! Seriously people. Largely irrelevant. All it does is provide an accolade which the club can use to try to gain more support/ promote PR and thus get more people coming and thus potential for better atmosphere and more money in the bank! Also how many players have come to the club and said that the family set up has been one of the things (admitedly a long way behind the money and our league position) that they have liked about the club!

Final thought... Fortress Portman Road - we won the majority of the home games and PR was known to be a difficult place to come - we won the award that year?! The fact that we have a ground that is welcoming to families should be a good thing and is testament to the off the pitch work that is done in drumming up more support.

I applaud the way the Town have tried to integrate families and welcome these awards. The use of two mascots - so each different is great to. Watch the kids faces next time they shake hands with Bluey or Crazee.
However..heaven forbid what happens to you once you turn 16.
That's where this club needs to do more work. Just how many of their previous season ticket holders are now priced out of the ground simply because they turned 16? The concessions for under 20, unwaged, and students are simply still not enough to counteract our high ticket prices.
Of course, the high prices at grounds is endemic and refelcts the bloated nature of football in general. The very best thing that could happen is a few Premiership Clubs to fold. We might ALL get our house in order then.

I can see peoples point about not being overly pleased with the award but it is important to get kids into PR before they go and support big clubs with a larger media profile.Anyway if all the adults sang and showed an example then the atmosphere would improve.Sometimes its like being surrounded with the miserable gits from the Muppets

Youre right, we should be more like west ham fans, then there would be alot more stabbings at the games and we would look well hard and people would respect us and there fore the team would be better. Not

I assume by the comments made by bleedblue and goatman they have no children??i have three children aged 8,11 and 17.My oldest boy started his "nursery"stage in the south stand at the age of 6.At the age of 15 he decided to join the singing legions in the north adding another voice to the dwindling numbers. My other two are now both serving there time in the south hoping that one day they too will be promoted to the north.....You see bleedblue if it wasn't for sad parents like me(flasks+sandwiches)where do you think the future supporter of Ipswich would come from???????

i don'tmind being child friendly provided they one day they stand up and make some noise

reusersfreekicks added 19:45 - Feb 11
What moronic comments about this being a bad thing for the club! People are thinking that family friendly and passionate are mutually exclusive and they are not. Probably more reactionaries who want a return to full scale violence and rubbish facilities. Oh well there are always some who are stuck in the past.

WadzillaBhoy added 05:04 - Feb 12
Its funny because at the reserve games its always the kids that make the most noise!

section_six_sam added 08:36 - Feb 12
no we just want peopleto show more passion and get behind the team instead of sitting in silence and blu dru:
although i didnt raise the point, i think we should be more like west ham fans, not in terms of violence but they get behind their teammore than we do.
Its more fun if you have a good drink and a sing
its more beneficial to moti team,
it can intimidate referees and opposition players
it can win our fans back a bit of pride

i just dont understand why its onlya very very small minority who do it, so yes like west ham fans please

blu_dru added 13:56 - Feb 12
I do sing section 6, i do back the players, but i dont undersatnd why everyone is complaining that we got awarded this for being family friendly? so what? if we had no kids coming there would be no fans for the future. Ipswich isnt like liverpool or west ham where generations of people had nothing but football in their lives. at the end of the day you cant force people to sing and try to intimidate refs if they dont want to.
