Walters Apologises for Posh Defeat
Walters Apologises for Posh Defeat
Friday, 19th Feb 2010 07:11

Skipper Jon Walters has apologised to fans for the 3-1 defeat at Peterborough United on Tuesday. The 26-year-old admitted that the performance was nowhere near good enough.

Walters said: “I need to apologise to our fans on behalf of the players. They gave us great support as usual on Tuesday and we let them down.

“Speaking as player spokesman, we'll be doing everything in our power to put things right.

“We've got the capacity in our side to do well but the table doesn't lie and we're only got ourselves to blame.

“We've been near the bottom all season and we've got to deal with that. That's what we're paid to do.

“We've got to stay positive and I believe we have enough quality and character in the squad that we can get away from where we are.”

Meanwhile, striker David Healy says Tuesday’s defeat was a bit of a reality check. The Northern Irishman, writing in his column in the Belfast Telegraph, says he has otherwise been enjoying his time with the Blues: “I played for 70 minutes on Tuesday night although sadly we lost 3-1 at Peterborough – that was the first disappointment I’ve suffered since making the switch to Portman Road from Sunderland.

“Things got worse for us the next night because Reading’s win against Crystal Palace meant we dropped into the bottom three. That has brought it home that we are smack, bang in the middle of a battle to avoid relegation from the Championship.

“We have a massive match against Sheffield Wednesday coming up at the weekend. We know we need to go to Hillsborough and get a win and start climbing the table as quickly as possible.”

Do your talking on the pitch please chaps.

Yep all well and good showing your disappointment in the press, but how many times has this been done through the season? Enough with the talk, everyone's bored of it. Turning the chat into performances would be much more appreciated.

If we lose Saturday could it be farewell RK??
Or should we just sack the players??

Agreed, enough excuses, does he really thinks that it washes with us. An apology after an event like that is meaningless unless its proved to be a blip or a turning point but how many times have we had the steriotypical player b@llocking from Roy, followed by some 'we let the wonderful fans down/we must try harder' flannel from the players. We are in the bottom 3 for a reason, why! What's the problem, we have some very good players, or at least we are led to believe they are by the fact that many of them are worth millions, Priskin, Edwards, Martin cost over a million each but don't play regulaly. We do have good players just not a good team, someone needs to be held accountable for this complete farcical mess.

On a good note at least I only live in Portsmouth, not support their team!!!

Agree with the comments above - time to get your fingers out lads. If you do, you'll get all the support that we can give.

RK may have overall responsibility for the situation, but once you're on the pitch, it's down to you - nobody else.

If nobody had said anything they would be branded as uncaring, this is exactly what i expected of jon as captain and a leader. It was a horrible night for all of us.

I can agree with "enough excuses" and the comments above fair play, but at the same time if they hadn't come and said something some fans would have been on their backs for not caring. It seems they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Also looking at the table we are 6 points of 12th place with a game in hand. I think the time to panic will be if we lose on Saturday.

I think that the point is that most of us will be fans of JW - he does set a good example on and off the pitch - but they do have to get on with it now!

If any of the Team, Coaches or Management read these comments, take heed.

Actions speak louder than words, respect has to be earned, please make much more effort on the pitch from now on, starting Saturday, we appreciate you coming on the internet to apologise, albeit that the club have probably asked you to do it, however if you don't significantly improve there will be a lot of very unhappy and disgruntled people after May !

I'm one of the silent majority who has just had a gutful of these pathetic statements week after week. Stop all this schmaltzy PR Evans, and take the right action for the situation now - Keane out or we are doomed

A settled team is the answer, start of the season we were poor in all areas and as it went on we had a defense that sorted themsevles out. Then all was needed was a striker to do the business which looks like is starting to happen and as soon as the side gets settled the defense gets pulled apart once again.David wright should be back in the back four, keano surely can see that the defenders were together as a unit so why change it.Im behind keano and never slagged him off,but like most of us town fans i am getting frustrated with the same excuses after every game.Come on boys lets grow a big pair and play your hearts out for the loyal supporters who spend there hard earned wages home and away.

We need something out of the next two away games to keep in touch, but after that we have 5 home games out of 7, THAT WILL DECIDE OUR SEASON !
especailly finishing off with 2 away games at Forest & Newcastle !

Portman needs to be q coldrun of noise for them games !

Keano get up and in to the technical area and do a bit,( sorry I mean a lot of directional play) , he really could be the 12th man for them. Week after week we see other managers stand up and get involved.
He does not have to be a Warnock or Holloway who go over the top at times.
They do seem to need more guidance at times, that is how I feel. COYB !!!!!!!!!

i dont think its a matter of players caring, i think its just bad management, team being f'cked about by a headless chicken , Keane was brought in for wrong reason,he was a big name,a manager with big profile but little managerial experience. It has not shown any sign of working, The blame or praise for performances rest on his shoulders[ lets not forget thats why he is on a nice little earner] So sending players out to make press statements about the failings is shyte .

It's the entire season he should be apologising for.

Yep words are re-assuring, but now they need to do the talking on the pitch. Wins against Sheff Wed and Scunthorpe are now ESSENTIAL, anything less would be totally unacceptable and can only lead to Keane being shown the door!

Mickey summed it up when he said "we are led to believe we have good players here". The worrying thing now is the table shows we dont have enough good players here. Thats why I am petrified.

nobrain added 09:33 - Feb 19
RK has to take responsibility - but so do the players. You can hardly blame him (although I'm sure some will), for experienced, international players switching off towards the end of games and conceding relatively soft goals.

My only question is how a side that is managed by one of the most committed and passionate players can turn out such limp and pathetic performances match after match??
It is a total mystery to me as you would expect Roy Keane team to give 100%
I know Walters has not been banging in the goals but his desire can never be in doubt. I just wish the other 10 players showed his enthusiasm.
