Mariner Apologises to Keane
Mariner Apologises to Keane
Sunday, 28th Mar 2010 19:44

Town legend Paul Mariner has apologised for failing to join Blues boss Roy Keane for a drink after his Plymouth side’s 2-0 victory at Portman Road last Tuesday. On Thursday, Keane hit out at Mariner for missing the traditional post-match meet-up.

Mariner said: “If I’ve offended anyone I apologise. I have the utmost respect for Roy and there is absolutely no way I would intentionally snub him.

“It was my first time back at Ipswich as a manager and I was kept busy in the media suite.

“Then every few yards I kept bumping into people I hadn’t seen in 20 years, including Mr Sheepshanks.

“To cap it all I lost my reading glasses and I was in a bit of a panic about that before they were found and returned to me. Four members of my staff spent about 25 minutes having a drink with Roy’s staff.

“It was unfortunate that I didn’t see Roy afterwards but I look forward to having a drink with him next time.”

Top bloke. You can not blame him for wanting to catch up with some of his old mates, personally I'm sure no snub was intended and I really can not understand why Keano felt the need to mention it to the press.

Probably shouldn't have but reading the whole interview he was making a comment in general and used Tuesday as an example. Not a smart move but blown out proportion by the local rags...they seem to be good at doing that.

I remember when I was 10 years old at Portman road on a photo shoot with the FA cup. I befriended the supporter of the year (Betty Felgate). She asked who my favourite was and I said it was Paul Mariner. She asked if he would have a photo taken with me. He replied he was too busy and walked on. Kevin Beattie saw how stuck up he was and had his photo taken with me instead. Maybe a leopard does not change it's spots.

wessextractorboy. Thanks for the memory jogger of mentioning the name of Betty Felgate who was also a Brantham Athletic supporter all those years ago, my football club at the time. A lovely lady.

Can you imagine Keane apologising over this if it was the other way around?

DONT APOLOGIZE PAUL, YOU SUMMED IT UP AND I KNOW YOU APOLOGIZED BUT YOU CLEARLY DIDN'T MEAN IT AND I DONT BLAME YOU BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED ALL THE VERY ACCEPTABLE REASONS WHY YOU DIDNT JOIN HIM FOR A DRINK. THE SIMPLE THING IS YOU HADNT SEEN SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN 20 YEARS FOR CHRIST SAKE!

Keane had a right to be offended, Mariner rightly apologized.
Everybody makes mistakes - move on.
Come on you blues!

@ChambersM no caps make you look like a idiot.

Bottom line Paul Mariner one of my heroes was wrong, business before pleasure and he should have gone for a drink...but he apologized as a man does and RK would have done if it had happened the other way around. unlike some of the sissy boys on this site. Now it is water under the bridge. All those who are using this to beat RK with... you are morons.

More trash reporting!

How boring has the media become, everyday more rubbish gets passed through the conveyor belt and everyone starts flapping and getting excited! In response to the story about Mowbray and all those who want curbishley do yourselves a favour and read keanes autobiography. The man is a winner and someone with more desire to succeed than curbishley will ever have. All those years under fergie, the greatest manager in premier league history and a firm believer in discipline!

This club needed discipline, we need to stop this pretty little football club playing pretty football, the championship is not about that anymore! Curbishley has won nothing and is a bore, his interviews have never been inspiring, the guy would add nothing. Keane should see out his 2 years and some of our so called stars need to take a look at themselves in the mirror, aka John Walters who has been shocking this season! Players are paid to do a job, and too many have bottled it and shown they don't cut it in this league!

Newspapers can write all the junk they want, its boring now

Well said Mariner now lets forget this deflection from Keane about losing 2-0 at home to a side going down !
And Truth agree Walters has struggled this season but there is only one person who keeps picking him and playing him left wing ,right wing ,up front .It is up to a manager to get the best from his players this has not happened this season with the majority under performing badly ,players wo have looked more than capable in this league or higher before now look dis interested and poor because they have lost faith in the management and direction of the team

Maybe we should have an anger management forum for some members.

The most respectful comment was Paul's last. "I look forward to having a drink with him next time"

I'm not sure how long that will be?

if i go down the pub and nobody wants a drink with me ,its a result. Why the fuss Keano ,really trivial ,in scheme of things, all this press over a drink in the 'Last Chance'' salloon .That is the sort of publicity the club can do without, but you just cant avoid .
