Keane Frustrated With Record-Breaking Draw
Keane Frustrated With Record-Breaking Draw
Saturday, 17th Apr 2010 19:08

Town boss Roy Keane was frustrated to fail to win yet another game having gone ahead, the Blues picking up a club record breaking 19th draw of the season. Keane wasn’t sure about Doncaster's late penalty, but Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll admitted that his side was perhaps fortunate to have been awarded the spotkick from which they equalised.

Keane said: "It was frustrating. We gave a bad goal away and what you have to learn, even on your off-days, is that when you go one-up you win the game. We didn't do that and it was down to a bit of inexperience, I suppose.

“The game lacked a bit of quality, especially in the final third, someone to pick out the right pass at the right time.

"It was a bit hit and miss from both teams, especially in the final third, and that's where you need a cutting edge."

Keane wasn’t sure about the penalty, given for a Shane O'Connor foul on Dean Shiels, which his players clearly felt oughtn’t to have been awarded: "I don't know. I haven't seen it but sometimes players have to be punished for making mistakes, so they learn from it. Otherwise if you get away with it you might be tempted to try and do it again.

"Shane made a mistake initially and then having got caught out on the wrong side he should have let the lad have another touch away from goal because he still had a lot to do to beat our keeper.”

The 19th draw of the season beats the club’s previous top total of 18, amassed in 1990/91, but Keane says it’s not something he is particularly happy to have achieved: "It's not a record we are proud about, the draws, it's very frustrating,"

The Blues boss was pleased with Connor Wickham’s opportunist strike: "Connor took his goal well. It was a big ask for the lad because of the games he has played lately but he was one of our better players, along with Gareth.

"I would liked to have got Billy Clark on earlier but even though he had two or three minutes, he looked neat and tidy and the other youngsters will benefit from the experience of being involved with the first team."

Doncaster boss Sean O’Driscoll felt the penalty was harsh: "We've benefited from this decision but in the last three games I've been on the receiving end, so we're either part of the problem or part of the solution.

"My view is that this was a soft one. You can see why the referee gave it. Technically it was a penalty because he pushed him in the back, but if it was given against me I'd be disappointed.

"Usually contact inside the area is different to contact outside the area. All managers will say they've had stonewall penalties turned down and we've had some horrific things that haven't been given for us.

"Then we get that one. It was the one major refereeing decision in the game and in my view we got away with it. I'm just trying to be honest."

O’Driscoll thought his side tested Brian Murphy too rarely: "I thought we had enough possession to win but didn't work their goalkeeper enough.

"This is our second season in the Championship and we miss a cutting edge. It was our achilles heel in the first season and probably again this season.

"But we were missing five first team regulars and have an extremely small squad, so performance-wise we can't complain too much.

"We've lost the last three games and played twice as well, so performance-wise we're pleased."

If we threw everything at it and missed lots of chances it would have been frustrating. However, at 0-0 Keane took off a striker (D.Murphy) and replaced him with a midfielder (Garvan), then at 1-1 he took off the other striker (Wickham) and replaced him with another midfielder (Clark). We ended the match with no strikers on the pitch - at home to Doncaster when we needed a goal! I find those tactics puzzling.

Overall it was a dull match which lacked in very much excitement at all. I know it is the end of the season and there is little to play for, but I would have hoped in those circumstances to see some attacking play, a few goals and a bit of entertainment.

I have to say that dispite keeping the faith all season, today was hugely disappointing in so many areas. IMO the worst 4 players in our team Walters, Leadbitter, Norris and Murphy are all the ones we have been pinning our hopes on for next season.
Something needs to change otherwise it will be more of the same next year as well.

Mark there is this player we have u may have heard of him i believe he is the captain? his name is John walters he was and is a striker on your theory we only started with one striker upfront the other was a left midfielder.

and even then at this time of the season those tactics are not puzzleing given that our season is either why use a useless striker in Pablo or Heally that you know you probably dont want next year when you can have a look at players from the bench that you are yet undecided about as in peters, garvan, and the new youths

Moan moan that is maybe but the football was pretty dull, not enough passing too much long ball, Garvan at least got things going a bit. Roy is developing a functional team, i can see us winning more games next season but at the expense of entertainment, winning is more important to him.A smaller squad is a great idea if it means paying higher wages for more quality. So lets look at the positives, the defence has looked much stronger mc cauley and delaney have done well, o, connnor played well today we should keep him. Wright and rosenior are ok at right back but that area could be strenghtened. Leadbitter
and Norris are strong in the centre but i would keep Garvan as he is more creative. Jack Colback is a star but it seems we will not be able to buy him, hopefully Civelli will return fully fit as he is good defensively as well as going forward. Walters has been not so consistent this season but he should be kept for his versatility. Edwards i think is not strong enough defensively, i would prefer Peters on the right as he is good in attack and defence. Up front i would keep Connor Wickham and bring in three new strikers. The Goal ratio of the rest is just not good enough. More shots on target than any other championship side with a top scorer with 7 tells its own story. Murphy Healy Stead Priskin and pablo are not the answer.Although the constant changing does not help, none has staked enough of a claim. The keeper Murphy looks a very good signing though. Smith Pim and Eastman should be kept as cover. Trotter is doing well at millwall maybe wortth keeping but Martin seems a bit light. Anyway i 'm a gardener not a football manager. Moan moan moan moan!!!

Mark - you were obviously at a different game! What RK actually did was take off the totally jaded and ineffective Murphy, put on a creative passing midfielder, moving Jon Walters forward. There were a lack of options on the bench as Roy picked a number of youngsters - as many fans have been calling out for. Although I don't think Walters is good enough, unfortunately, your post is incorrect. It is also worth pointing out that Wickham was absolutely knacked. Again see comments about lack of experience on bench - as called for by most supporters.

Viljoen67, Ace summary (if you pardon the pun). The only question I have is where are these 3 strikers going to come from? - Who can we afford that fits the bill?

Blueknight85 added 22:49 - Apr 17
happy 2bBlue we can afford anyone that is happy to play in the championship with Counago, Stead , Lisbie , Bruce , Thatcher , Pim , Quinn and Trotter all off the wage bill

To answer some comments above, I acknowledge Walters can play up front but my point was that he is predominantly a midfielder and has been shown many times to be largely ineffective up front (albeit so have many others this season). My point was about the tactical substitutions reducing our firepower.

I agree that D.Murphy looked jaded and I am glad we have found a bit more out about him before paying big money. Was it about £2M quoted as agreed last summer? He doesn't seem worth it to me, especially on big wages.

It was nice to see Garvan and I think he did okay, but there were just not the forward options ahead of him.

I am pleased that some younger players got a chance and it was sensible to have some on the bench. With seven substitutes available, I would have named at least one striker on the bench though.

Well said Jas.

We were robbed of a win today even though it wasn't the most exhilarating game of football, I feel sorry for the defense who deserved a clean sheet.

Good subs from Keano to bring in garvan and get the ball on the floor, hope we don't buy Murphy as he's lost all his early desire already (must have heard what our top wages are)

Their keeper was a right pantomime nob'ed.

You are frustrated Keane ! We are with you !! GO ! You are destroying the club which after a season has gone BACKWARDS with you . You have let some good players go and you constantly chop and change the team - no consistency no good leadership !

boys boys boys, all i can say is, ok look we gave it a go, it didn't quite work out. nevermind, its the end of the season now, time for a change i think. 19 draws, rubbish tactics and now he wants to sell wickham in exchange for healy murphy and 2 million pound? another stupid decision for keano, wheres the clown at, he speaks sense! seriously guys, i beleive in ipswich, i love ipswich but this stupid phase has got to end. keano will not take us anywhere and if he does, i tell you what, give me a ring and i will buy you all a drink down the farmhouse pub in kesgrave!

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 16:25 - Apr 18
Well I'm glad petersongoal and tom_the_blue have sorted that one out! On the subject of Wickham, if Keano were to move him on for Murphy & Healy, even if extra cash were involved, I think he would really alienate ALL the fans. The Rhodes affair would pale into insignificance in comparison, and that was bad enough. We will have to get used to the idea that Wickham will be in the frame from now on - but in exchange for Murphy and Healy???? Come on!!!! Sunderland can't wait to get rid of them. I'll support them if they play for the Town, but I expect Wickham to be 10 times the player Murphy is in 3 years' time. I really hope we still have enough pride and passion left in our youth and our traditions and enough common sense to hang on to Wickham for a couple of seasons more. I know it's only paper talk, but it does worry you!
0

Mark added 16:48 - Apr 18
I don't think Keane has said anything hinting that he would cash in on Wickham. The reason the paper refers to it as a possibility is because Keane has one year left on his contract and needs fast success, and if Evans doesn't provide big money in the summer then selling Wickham is probably the only way to raise significant transfer funds. What other saleable fringe players do we have? The Wrights are out of contract, Lisbie is worthless and the loan players will go back. That probably leaves Bruce (£300K?), Garvan (£500K?), Martin (£300K?), Counago (£200K?), Peters (£500K?), Stead (£500K?), Balkestein (£200K?), Priskin (£500K?), Edwards (£300K?), Smith (£300K?)...so £3M to £4M maybe. Wickham could be worth about that on his own due to his massive potential. I really hope that Evans or Clegg would block the sale of Wickham if proposed, in the long-term interests of the club.
