Keane: Parachute Extension Will Make Life Tougher
Keane: Parachute Extension Will Make Life Tougher
Wednesday, 21st Apr 2010 09:46

Boss Roy Keane feels that the planned extension of Premier League parachute payments to four years will make it harder for established Championship sides to compete for promotion. The new plan, which is still subject to a vote and agreement from the Football League, would see relegated clubs receive £16 million in each of their first two years out of the top flight and £8 million in each of the following two.

Keane says the proposal, which if agreed would come in next season, would make promotion more difficult for clubs in Town’s position: “It’s going to be extra hard.

“You look at the teams which have gone up this year, West Brom and Newcastle came down, they’ll always be strong anyway, but now they’re giving these extra few years and the money.

“So, the longer you’re out of the Premiership, it’s just going to get tougher and tougher. That’s why every pre-season each player you bring into the club seems to be a bigger decision than ever.”

After a meeting of the top flight clubs last Thursday a spokesman said that the proposals need the agreement of the Football League, while a vote will be taken at the Premier League's AGM in June: "Any decision regarding the future structure of parachute payments cannot be taken by the Premier League alone and must be agreed with the Football League.

"The Premier League is currently in positive discussions with the Football League on a number of issues; however an announcement will only be made once these have reached a satisfactory conclusion."

Looking at next season, Keane expects the Championship to again be difficult: “The teams which are coming down will be pretty strong, no doubt. The teams coming up, the likes of Leeds and Norwich, they’re very, very good Championship clubs.

“We keep saying it’s going to get harder and harder, that’s why the quicker you get out of it the better. It’s taken Burnley a long time to get out of it and they are struggling to stay in it.

“It’s very, very difficult, there’s no getting away from it. But that’s the aim, and the chief executive and owner are aware of it and that’s why when you invest in players you’ve got to try and get the right players. You can’t afford to make too many mistakes in the transfer market.”

The Blues boss is confident that his side aren’t too far away from being contenders: “I still think we’re not far from being a decent team, but we’re far enough away.

“We’ve got four or five players we want to get in and one of those is someone who is going to put the ball in the back of the net, and there aren’t many of those who are prepared to drop into the Championship. There is an element of a wage structure here, so it’s going to be tough.”

I don't agree with these extra payments. Sensible clauses need to be added to contracts to enable teams to survive after relegation. Its almost as if the Prem wants to stop any exsisting championship team from making it to the top division and just have yoyo teams like west brom, wolves etc swapping places with each other, each year.

I totally agree. Its a joke. You get rewarded for failure. This will just make the gulf between the championship and the premiership even greater. There will also be an increase in the yo yo clubs (going up and coming straight back down)

At the moment there is still some competition in the championship at the top and bottom, this season we had Forrest who were fighting relegation for most of last season changeling for automatic promotion this season, that would never happen in the premiership.. The premiership has become boring with the same four teams winning everything generally. The premiership is in danger of people becoming more interested in the championship because theres more competion, so by increasing the parachute payments they are making a lot easier for clubs to go straight back up, and remove the competition and mack the championship as boring as the premiership. Clubs need to have clauses in players contracts so that they get paid less in the championship, and budget accordingly.

More excuses...this guy hasn't exactly filled me with enthusiasm since he arrived and let's face it,the only reason he hasn't walked is cos he knows it'll look bad on his CV.

Lightningboy yawn yawn the only reason why he hasn't gone is because the determination he has to to succeed at ipswich and i believe he can personally be a good manager here because he is gradually gettting a team that was totally poor under magilton and gradually transforming them from back to front.

Another note i agree with his approach that ipswich need to be less nice i have always thought this it's like teams coming to PR now a day's don't dread coming to PR now a day's which they should this needs to be improved e.g fans getting behide them more.

About the football being played this year you get people saying what a load of rubbish they have played of course there have been games where ipswich have not played well all times.

But we are no where near as bad as some on here point out if and yes BIG if i know took the chances cut at the silly late lead slip up's then we would be in a better postion so it's a slim line between where we want to be and where we are now so it's not as bad as people are putting out.

So they asked premier league clubs if they would like to receive more money if they are relegated and they said yes???

And now they are asking the football league if they want teams in one of their leagues to have more money??

Why not try asking the clubs like us who are going to have a far smaller chance of being promoted because of this? How is this fair, it's just another case of the big clubs sticking together, this has Phil Gartside's stink all over it.

As for Keane;s comments, the most interesting one is about the goalscorer being a premiership player and not Hooper / Jackson / Lambert etc. Maybe suggesting he thinks Murphy or Healy are the answer to our problems, which I'm not sure I agree with.

It's the massive wages these relegated clubs will be able to fork out that worries me, no decent players would move to somewhere like ipswich with a top earner getting 12k a week, when next year Burnley will be able to offer 3 times that a week for at least 4 years of second tier football.

Agree with Brockley and others. Seems odd there is so much desire to "compensate" clubs that fail in the Prem when on the face of it it's more of a "reward". So we're talking £32million over 4-years if you go down. How much does a club who finishes just above the drop get for being in the Prem... I'm sure they have done the maths, but can there really be much financial difference in staying up in 17th for four years as opposed to going down and cashing in too. Also, how does it work if you go up, then go down, then go up the following year and go down again, do you get parachute for both relegations over that period, thats serious money. whatever happened to sorry mate, you didn't get enough points, good try though, see ya in a few years maybe!

I cant believe for a seccond this will be agreed its rediculous 16 million for the first year is more than enough.

Giving teams such a hugeeee safety net not only gives relegated teams an unfair advantage over the rest of the league but it encourages over spending on fees and wages in the lower teams of the premier league because they know they will be ok if they get relegated which puts the clubs in risky situations of going bust if they go to far.

No relegated clubs seem to be having to many problems recently to warrent an increase anyhow so i cant see how the idea is even justified.
If they want to better protect clubs finances when suddenly losing the sponsorships etc. of the premier league then they should have League enforced statutory contract clause written into the contract/staff of any registered premier league player
that reduces their wage by a standard % that is not huge enough to suddenly cripple the players lifestyle <<( haha ) but significantly reduce a clubs wage bill rather than throwing large lumps of money at them giving them an unfair safety net and therefore advantage.

It seems like getting Relegated would be almost as rewarding as getting promoted in the first place LOL
If a promoted club cant manage their finances once up to still be secure if relegated then it is their problem they aren't required to increase wages they aren't required to include bonuses and pay increase's upon promotion into players contracts they aren't forced to spend money on new players once promoted.

So why should it be a requirement for them to be compensated if relegated at all.

Matt the blue and Blue army ... yawn yawn why dont you change the record and stop having a go at people for criticising Keane .
Keane has failed badly this year ,Magilton got sacked for being in a far better position than Keane's team will achieve more wins ,more goals ,more points .
He has spent a lot of money on players who have failed with a loanee winning player of the year above £8.5 million pounds worth of signings ,half of the squad are shadows of their former selves with Garvan ,Walters ,Norris,R Wright having their worst seasons for us so far . Mac and David Wright have shown their class after being messed about because the man didnt know his starting line up till three quarters of the season had gone after saying the squad was good enough pre season.
I am not anti Keane and really hope he succeeds as i think he is the type of character and name we need to step up from this league and really push on but i will not congratulate him until he has proved himself at Town and so far this has not happened in any way ,the league position is worse ,the football in the majority has been worse ,the team shape, width and style has been worse ,the constant falling out and hot headed remarks to the press after one game or incident with players is worrying ,after his signings we still do not have a left midifielder or forward which we needed at the start of last season .
So please forgive some of us who are a little concerned over Mr Keane as some of us are equally as bored of being told next month and by Xmas and at the end of the season when we go on a run and this time next season etc as for some of us the signs of improvement are very small .
Roll On next season and the world cup, and congratulations to Colback well done

Daft idea, They should distribute the money around lower league clubs to underpin English football, not perpetuating the employment of oversea players.

Personally I have never really watched premiership matches unless I'm bore and want to scare the pants of myself! When we get there we had better have made some serious improvements to what we have now. No fan of RK but he was left with 2 choices at some point in this season, a) Take the crap from all and sundry, stick at it and make it work b) Walk. Well I'll respect him if he stays and we make the play off's next year.

Spot on with your last paragraph Surco72 - it's always "ifs & whens"...the above "yawns" are what the majority have been watching most of this season.

I'm sorry if I upset some of you on here because I don't think the sun shines blindingly out of Roy's arse (he's obviously aiming it straight at some of you) but to be honest Keane's continually proved himself for 12 months now that he hasn't got a bloody clue...this season has been a shambles and no matter who he brings in this summer it'll be a shambles under him again next season.

Yawn.

Have I read that right (and I have read it several times). Does that mean that a club would receive 48m over 4 years, 48 million what a joke. I thought that these payments were for lost revenue (ie TV rights) and to cover the obscene contracts that these clubs give players.
UNBELIEVABLE

If it happens, this money will just widen the gap between the richer and poorer clubs, and all the cash will go to paying players even bigger wages so the fans will not benefit.

For Ipswich, it does make it harder to get promoted but it also makes the prize of promotion bigger. Will Marcus Evans provide the funds to give us a big push for promotion next season? If so, will Keane spend well? If not, how is Evans going to profit from Ipswich and recoup all the money he has invested up to now?

As for Keane's comment “We've got four or five players we want to get in and one of those is someone who is going to put the ball in the back of the net, and there aren't many of those who are prepared to drop into the Championship.", he seems to be talking as though the only place to get players is the Premier League! These guys are on such big money and the reason they may drop down is because they are not good enough for the Prem. While not ruling out Premier League players, surely it is better value for money to go for young hungry lads from the Championship and League 1 who have proved they can put the ball in the net and can improve?!

As for getting us into the play-offs, we were 9th last year and needed to improve just three places. With the big money that has been spent, this should have been achieved. Instead we have dropped to 13th. If big money is spent again, the play-offs should be an absolute minimum. Promotion in two seasons was the objective, and still is according to the season ticket renewal pack.

A couple of random thoughts.

Anyone below Everton will be a relegation candidate at the start of every season so 12 clubs will definitely support this change.

R.Wright was on £25k/wk to be understudy to Green. £1.25m a year for back-up players soon mounts up when you have a first team squad of 30 players. Makes our £11m wage bill seem a bit sad.

Good players won't sign relegation clauses - short-term contrasts yes - so there will always be massive hurt for any relegated side, if not adminstration, unless that side goes up with a view to going down again (WBA, Burnley ...).

The Premier League is mega-bucks and anyone who wants to compete is toast without these large parachute payments. I'm not condoning it but it's their club and they make the rules.

We need to get there. Not sure how having watched the last season tho'.

Tractorog added 13:08 - Apr 21
Rather than worrying about parachute payments it would be better for football if the Premiership forced certain clauses into all player contracts. If you want to play in the prem you MUST have a relegation clause.

Looking at what happened to Pompey (£120m????) their problems were triggered by winning the FA Cup which triggered unsustainable bonuses in player contracts because they had "qualified for Europe" - remind you of anyone?

This makes it even more important that we go up next year. I like what Keane stands for, but I fear we will be in the same boat this time next year. Would like to see someone new in charge.

Surco you can say what you want about Keane so can anyone else but can you not atleast only do it on story's with some relevance and stick to talking about the parachute payments n this one thats the only reason people get wound up because they have to read to same pathetic dig over and over again no matter what the actual story is about.

Surco - accurately summed up.
There can be no disputing that Keane has had a dreadful season on many counts, probably the worst of which has been his awful signings.
Anyone on here who dares to reflect this gets slated.
Lets hope any relegated club getting parachute payments will waste the money in the same way that we have this season.
