Town and Sunderland Begin Murphy Talks?
Town and Sunderland Begin Murphy Talks?
Monday, 26th Apr 2010 00:24

Town are reported to have begun talks with Sunderland regarding Daryl Murphy’s permanent move to Portman Road. Murphy has been on loan with the Blues since January, scoring six goals in 18 games.

Town boss Roy Keane is said to be keen to get the deal done quickly with other clubs believed to be interested in the 27-year-old Irish international.

Murphy is contracted to the Black Cats for another two years and is believed to earn in excess of £20,000-a-week, around double Town’s top wage. However, the clubs were believed to have agreed a fee of £1.5 million rising to £2.5 million last summer prior to his switch breaking down and it is likely that Sunderland would be willing to settle the former Waterford United man's contract given that he is very much out of Steve Bruce's plans.

The player himself is understood to be happy at Portman Road and keen to stay with the club where he previously spent time on trial in 2004/05 prior to joining Sunderland.

Meanwhile, Celtic and Coventry are the latest clubs to be linked with Scunthorpe striker Gary Hooper, who is also said to be interesting Town, Derby, QPR and Leeds. The former Grays man is now claimed to be worth £2 million, a £1 million up on the value quoted in last week’s papers.

Hooper certainly took his goals well on Saturday.

If Murphy is 'free' then his high wages can be covered, but if they want £2m then we should walk away.

6 goals in 18 games isn't a great return for someone with his wage

surely stead had a better return than that

I think not now, would rather have Hooper And Chopra

I think he faded and has been, like the other strikers, shown up by a hungry 17 yeard old. I don't think his heart is at Ipswich and we need 11 men on the pitch that want to do well for the club. He's been good and scored some important gols but I think (And sorry to jump on the band wagon) Chopra will be the perfect partner with Connor Wickham and Pablo as the third striker. He has made it clear how much respect he has for keane. However if Cardiff get promoted he will be staying there. What about Fowler? He's without a club at the moment ;-)

Awful on Sat - if he was playing for a contract then he failed. I know he was out of position at the start (right midfield .. wtf!) but there was no effort at all.

I think that because he had played a couple opf games he was fit enough for the first 12 or so games, but after not playing that amount of football for some time it was sure to take its toll.

I think we should definatly get him.

Mark Fowler or Martin Fowler - i presume you are not talking about Robbie!! - he aint got the motivation - oh and sorry Pablo has played his last game for us me thinks time to remember the good times from him ( long ago ) and say Adios - need to build for future - Wickham plus Chopra , Hooper , Jackson ?

definitely not worth the sort of money that he would cost in fee and wages . started brightly and scored vital goals , but recently he has looked very ordinary and showed little reason to justify signing him .
for someone trying to impress , he doesn't seem to be making much effort , he is no better than stead.

It's a big no for me for Murphy. Started well but a poor performer, come on town dig deep and give Wickham the partner he deserves!

fowler is without a club cause he couldnt make the grade in townsville i guess playing in the 2nd in england wouldnt be as high quality as the A league so he would be worth a risk for a year but should have tried him out this year

great start from murphy but his performances have dwindled for what reason nobody knows. so not sure on getting him on a perm deal. there are other strikers about austin, paynter. jackson, hooper, lambert, best, chopra, fletcher and nugent relegated.

HAHA I meant Pauline ;-) I am sure we are going to be linked with everyone and their dog. And I think Robbie is about to sign for Sydney FC, at least that will be one thing decent about Australian Football, sorry soccer :-(

Ok he scored some vital goals for us when he first joined on loan, but he's faded massively lately and certainly not playing like a player who's being paid 20k per week! I don't even think, and never have come to think of it, that he's worth half of what he's gets paid.
He's over-rated in my opinion. If we got him on a free transfer or for a small fee with realistic wages being paid, he may be a useful addition to the squad. Like someone else has said, Stead's record isn't too disimilar and I probably prefer Stead.

Also I'd much rather Keane and Clegg focus on spending their time and efforts getting some proven young talents out there like Gary Hooper for instance, who is hungry to succeed and certainly a player for the future.
I have family in Scunthorpe and class them as my second team, and I've seen Hooper play many times and honestly believe he's exactly what we've missed this season. Hooper and Wickham up front next season sounds great, we just need someone in midfield who can create chances for our strikers next season whoever it may be. One name that will be guaranteed to start more regularly come the start of the season is Wickham.

It certainly proves to be an interesting summer! I just hope we get the right players in during pre-season who can hit the ground running come the start of the season.

Dreaming if you think Gary Hooper is going to join. Now Wolves, Wigan and Celtic are involved, it's game over. We could compete and be a better choice than other championship clubs but not anymore. Any other suggestions?

This is a big test for Mr Evans, it's his money and he is a shrewd business man.
There is only one logical conclusion, but we will see!

Thing is Keane has made it quite clear that he's after experience, so Hooper and alll the others being mentioned are out. chopra is possible if Cardiff don't go up.

Must admit, I wouldn't be keen to see Murphy here. for me, he's done nothing to justify us signing him on any wage, let alone be one of our highest paid players - and if we even think about paying him our top wage then I have no faith in our executive team.

If he's been playing for a contract then I wouldn't want to see what he's like if he can't be bothered!

I reckon we should go for James Beattie....not playing at Stoke that much anymore and has a good goalscoring record.........Sheffield Utd got into the play-off almost on the back of having Beattie..

I can't believe people are suggesting Stead has a better return than Murphy. When are people finally going to realise that we are NOT missing Stead and despite one decent period of form from him, overall he goes several matches (9 or 10 usually) offering absolutely nothing.

Has it come to this? Convincing yourselves that Stead is an outstanding player so you can have another gripe at Roy?

Bottom line: Murphy despite not being match fit, scored 6 crucial goals in a short space of time for us. It was an excellent decision to bring him in and to ship Stead out. That said, I wouldn't match his wages on a perm. basis.

Surely the talks will follow these lines :
"You have him" ; "No you have him" , "Come on , you took him on loan ,youve got to take him", "No he is a horses ar se we dont want him."

Beckford - Leeds
Hooper - Scunnie
Chopra - Cardiff
E-Blake - Wolves
Scotland - Wigan
Evans - Sheffield Utd
etc

plenty of young striekrs worth a punt rather than Murphy if S'land want a fee for him.

Markie31 - Great Shout the beattie thing but I think one of the teams going up would probably take him if he was going to leave stoke.

The Murphy debate is interesting and shows the mentality of supporters (Including myself) when Murphy was scoring, he was the best thing since sliced bread but when things go a little sour we turn on them i.e. everyone hailed Keanes arrival, things go bad and he is hated. I am on the fence either way with the Murphy thing and will have to see how it plays out.

i would like murphy get him match fit, i do agree he is not worth a big fee and yes my first choice would be hooper or chopra. Hooper is intresting alot of club some in the prem so can not see that happening, chopra will stay with cardiff if they get promoted so murphy wants to stay i would get it done as early as possable and then look for another striker with some pace that would mean

murphy, connor, priskin and hopefully hooper
