Keane and Clegg Set for Talks on Pre-Season
Keane and Clegg Set for Talks on Pre-Season
Monday, 26th Apr 2010 09:06

Boss Roy Keane says he and chief executive Simon Clegg will look more closely at the club’s 2010/11 pre-season campaign this week. The Blues boss is thinking about reprising last summer’s games in Ireland and training camp in Portugal but is less keen on another session at an army barracks.

Keane said: “We’ve got teams lined up. We went to Portugal last year, which was absolutely brilliant and I wouldn’t rule out going there again. No doubt there will be a few games in Ireland as we probably won’t be afford to be able to go too far abroad. We’ve got plenty of options to look at and we’ll do all that this week."

The Blues boss says some aspects of last year's programme - which included two trips to Ireland for friendlies - are likely to be changed: “There was stuff last year which wasn’t all perfect, as much as [fitness coach] Antonio Gomez has done a brilliant job with the fitness side of it.

“We have to tweak a few things from last season. It was a busy schedule, I remember the travelling was a bit crazy. We squeezed a lot in and we suffered a little bit, even though we got away with it in terms of injuries.”

The two-day visit to Colchester Garrison to be put through their paces by the 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery clearly took its toll on some members of the squad: “Whether we have two days in an army barracks remains to be seen because a lot of the players suffered with blisters.

"Colin Healy suffered a lot with blisters and one or two lads had sore ankles for a few days. That was wearing those dodgy boots at the army camp, stuff we have to learn from - it’ll be bare feet next time!”

Maybe they should all go away for a 10 week break and come back two days before season starts - cant be any worst than the start last year!! ( joke ) priority is gonna be who is going - players - then sort out schedule - Sunderland , Celtic , Cork friendlies no doubt

Don't Joke about the Blisters, some of the players had major injuries that impacted on pre-season, and for a few recovery from other minor injuries. I'd not like to see a start again like last season. It was over in 10 games. I also got wind that it rained that hard that even the squadies had enough! Not exactly the team building nights under the stars Keano had planned.

The damp got into the unbroken boots and it's lucky we had anyone to kick a ball, nice!

I am a fan on Keane. Although i'd just like to say that I think this Ipswich-Ireland link has gotten too much over the last couple of years. I don't see what we gain by playing Irish teams in pre season, perhaps just a scouting opportunity? Also i'd like to see a few more pre season home games, have a good pre-season at home, then hopefully take our (hopefully ) good home form into the new campaign, I think if we are too have a good season our home form will be key.
But that's just my opinion, what does everyone else think on the pre season schedule?

Maybe Keano & Clegg could go off for a romantic 1 year trip around the world together?

I like the idea of a mini-tournament in pre-season.
Get four clubs of a similar stature based somewhere for a week - Holland would be a good shout, it's near enough not to incur much expense and the quality of football would be decent enough. We could play a Dutch team and maybe a couple of Scandanavian teams - Helsingborgs, AZ Alkamaar and one other?
Failing that, remember the Willhire Cup? Wasn't that Norwich, Colchester, Cambridge and us?

Blueherts; Sunderland and Celtic in pre-season would be good games for us, we'll also play Brentford as we always do, and also chuck Colchester and Southend in as well, it will stop the travelling.

How about 'The Sir Bobby Robson Tournament, I think that was talked about last year when the great man died. Get Us, Newcastle, PSV and Fulham (as he played for them) or even Sporting Lisbon, then hold it yearly using one of the clubs as host, i'e we host it this year, Newcastle next etc, I'm sure it could work.

Last year's pre-season didn't go well and led to a lot of our problems this season. Serious thought needs to be given to the plans this year. All for ditching publicity stunts like training with the army. I also seem to remember we suffered a few injuries in the Irish "friendlies" last year so perhaps this is something we should re-think. Scandinavia might be a better option?
