Both Wrights Amongst Those Released
Both Wrights Amongst Those Released

TWTD understands that Richard Wright and David Wright have been told that their Town contracts will not be renewed when they expire at the end of the season. Defender Pim Balkestein can also leave the club during the summer, while Jon Stead and loanee Liam Rosenior have been told they are not in Roy Keane’s plans for next season.

The decision to release Richard Wright, who rejoined his hometown club two years ago, comes as no shock with Brian Murphy increasingly establishing himself as the club’s number one and with the former England man a high earner.

David Wright’s exit after three and a half years at the club is perhaps more surprising given that he is in the team at present, although Keane brought Rosenior in on loan for the season in August, indicating that the former Wigan man wasn’t a player he particularly rated and had also made a move for Danny Simpson before he joined Newcastle.

Balkestein, whose two-year deal is up in June, although the club had the option of a third season, has fallen out of favour in the second half of this season and is currently on loan at Brentford. The Bees are understood to be interested in signing the former Heerenveen man on a permanent basis, while the player is considering moving back to Holland.

Rosenior, whose Reading contract is up this summer, had established himself as Town’s first choice right-back until the latter stages of the season when he fell out of favour, particularly after his performance at Watford.

Stead, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2011, joined Coventry on loan in January having failed to score enough goals in the first half of the season. A fee for Stead's permanent move to the Sky Blues is believed to have been agreed, although personal terms are yet to be settled. Daryl Murphy looks to be a direct replacement for the much-travelled former England U21 international.

Town have 11 players who are out of contract this summer and not all have them have yet been told their futures. Boss Roy Keane has also said that a number of players who will still be in contract next season are also likely to be on their way.

Anyone know how many Irish players Sunderland have left?

Firstly, Stead was hardly given a chance in the first half of the season while Murphy has been a regular. So it's not about goals scored, but about how Keane rated him (i.e. he didn't play him much). But I'm no fan of Stead, just saying that it's an unfair comment - you can't score goals if you're not playing regularly.

As for David Wright, I think this is a mistake. RK hasn't managed to replace him so far - it looks as though he doesn't rate Rosenior that well either so who's he going to replace him with? Personally I thought Simpson was poor when he was here on loan, so if that's the standard of replacement we can expect then why isn't Wright staying, if only as back-up?

As for R Wright, the only reason I can see for letting him go is wages, as I don't rate Murphy as being any better at all. But agreed that with Murphy here Wright has to go.

Another summer of changing the defence spells trouble. D.Wright is a good defender, i'd have offered reduced terms for a year he can take it or leave it - if he wants 2-3 year deal elsewhere then fair enough he's been a good servant and let him leave.

Problem is not only do we now need a new CD but cover too.. Bruce out Rosenior out, Delaney is establishing himself despite a poor start imo.

No major shocks there. I think D. Wright is a solid enough player without being anything special. R Wright will be on a very decent wage and for me B Murphy and ALB will do as cover especially with Ian Mcloughlin coming through (if he stays).

Rosenior has been a bit of a disapointment in the last part of the season - he wouldve been one of the first players that I would have had on the team sheet but think that he has let himself down in the last few games.

Balkestein has not really "trained on" and can't argue that he wasn't given the chance - again we have cover in Smith and Eastman so is not really needed.

Stead is an average player and will not be missed and I would rather have Murphy any day of the week.

No news on Pabs yet - part of me wants him to stay but the other part realises that he just hasn't done it this season and there really is no reason for Keane to want to keep hold of him.

Seems to me that a right back might be in order pretty sharpish then. I'm a little surprised actually, I thought both Rosenior and Wright were there or thereabouts, without being outstanding, but the competition for the place would keep them both on their toes. Oh well...
Jon Stead... no he's not exactly Wayne Rooney, but who at this level is? He wouldn't be starting every game by any means, but if what we've got left is Pablo, Priskin, Murphy, Healey, Wickham, then it's hard to see that Stead's not up to the mark. The only thing I can read into this is that Keane has plans for a major overhaul of the striking department, in which case I hope he pulls it off.
By the way, just a thought, but Keane was pictured in today's EADT at the Palace game on Monday night. Am I the only one hoping that he might have been having a nose at that Ambrose kid? If Palace go down he'd be one of the first to be tempted to play at a higher level I'd have thought... His dead ball delivery has become really something else.

I shouldn't think any of them are particularly bothered about being released. They are working for an inconsistent nutter with no man management skills whatsoever. It must be like getting a release from Mugabe's cabinet - you'd be glad to go!

if this is true - then both are a shame and RK must have other plans especially in the right back position.

Wrighty (keeper) would want to stay in Ipswich i am sure and would i suspect have taken a big drop in wages to stay here, his family is here, hes an ipswich boy. Murphy's been solid and he and wrighty would have given us an excellent keeper coverage

I rate David Wright, dont think hes had many if any bad games, but is he a premiership defender in the making?..poss not..worth another year's deal i would have thought.

as far as the rest are concerned good luck to them all...

David Wright very good defender but now getting very slow and doen't overlap the left back as he doesn't have the pace, Rosenior had his good games but he had some very poor games as well, Keane is looking for consistancy like the two centre halfs who have been ever present thoughout the season. Someone like Neil Danns at Palace or maybe Ambrose would be good additions, Ambrose has been given more freedom and when he was on loan last season he new he was only going to be there for a few months drifting in and out of games but you can't argue with his goalscoring record this season, where we do not score enough goals from. Civelli coming back to the squad will be a positive, Jamie Peters looks like he will be at left back, personally I don't think O' Connor is good enough at left back, Wickham has been a revelation in the last month and a half, I can now see why people are raving about him, all the dead wood needs to go but the problem is do people want them?.

Can't disagree with any of these decisions. I was impressed with Rosenior when he first came but I think he may be a player who is far too outspoken and burnt his bridges after the Watford away match. I can see Bardsley coming in at right back which matches all the criteria required of a Roy Keane signing. As for Pablo I like him but I think he will be on his way as he is not a RK type player. Lots of work to be done and no doubt countless potential new faces coming to the Club will be placed in the frame.

Surely he has to keep David Wright??? solid defender who always seems to be a scapegoat when things go wrong and is always dropped, i think he's our next best defender after McAuley!!

I hope Bruce isnt going to be right back next season as he's an awful defender good commitment but just not a good footballer.

As for Stead wouldnt be too disappointed if he left but i would be disappointed to see Murphy come in, apart from the goals he scored (which seem like ages ago) he is quite frankly awful didnt realise he was playing on Saturday until he got subbed.

I hope Keane knows what he's doing as getting rid of David Wright is a mistake, but im still 100% behind Keane COYB!!!

Must admit, for all RK goes on about effort and commitment etc he clearly has his favourites for whatever reason, as Murphy has (as pointed out above) been non-existent for several matches, yet he still plays.

Priskin and others are dumped the moment they have a bad game (or bad 20mins in Garvan's case).

Anyway, think D Wright would be good back-up if nothing else, as we now need two right-backs and I think we have several problem positions in the team and that isn't one of them so of the 4-5 signings he has planned at least one, possibly two will be full-backs that I'm not convinced we need.

R.Wright - not a regular anymore and will be on too high wages to be a back up keeper - can't argue.
D.Wright - bit of a shame as he's been a good servant and will never let you down with commitment (but as shown for Carroll's goal at the weekend, he has lost any pace he had and won't now take us to the next level).
Balkestein - been overtaken by Smith and Eastman in the pecking order for back up centre backs, so surplus to requirements.
Stead - i think he's hit and miss. Sometimes i watch him and think he's great, next time awful. If Coventry are willing to take him (and Coleman has indicated that he would be) and we get a decent replacement (not sure Murphy is that much better however) then happy to see him go.
Rosenior - had a decent start but faded badly. Looks like a right back will now be one of the five signings Keane has spoke about (probably Bardsley as others have suggested).

Letting David Wright go is a big big mistake has played very well since moving to right back around March time. Good solid pro.

I have no issue with any of these decisions.
Richard Wright was very poor at the start of the season and is on big money. He also turned us down in favour of the West Ham bench a few years back so knows that tough decisons have to be taken in football.
David Wright does not attack enough. He is versatile but not good enough to start week in week out in a top 6 chasing team which is what we are aiming to be.
It all depends who comes in anyway but we need hungry players who want to play for the club and want to get in the Premiership. How many of those being released would get in to Newcastle or West Broms team?

Murphy looked v shaky at Newcastle. Reckon we'll be after a loanee keeper after the first two months of the season

Tractorog added 10:35 - Apr 28
I agree with hrj that D Wright is a good solid pro - not spectacular, but dependable. Whilst Keane may want a better alternative - finding one may be more difficult for Keane than he imagines.
Who is going to want to join us with Keane on a 14 month contract? Only someone after the money and not interested in the guarantee of games.

hadleighboyblue added 10:35 - Apr 28
Still think R Wright is better keeper than Murphy , assuming he has got his confidence back , but understand that wages would be an issue .

D. Wright would be worth keeping as dependable cover for both full back positions

Think we should forget about D Murphy .....been very disappointing recently , not hungry enough to justify the cost .

that is a real shame for David Wright, He has been a good player for us over the years and has put in some good displays. I am not a fan of yet more change where it is not needed.

David Wright isn't a mind blowing defender, don't cry over him until you see who Keane brings in to replace him. O'Connor looks really good at left back, centre backs ever present, jaime's a pacey alternative to either full back position - we're hardly starting the defense from scratch next season.

More worried about splashing a Mill on Murphy: apart from his few early tap ins he's scored none, his 'holdup play' was terrible against Scunthorpe, and Connor's ball skills makes him look like an old duffer. Some hungry goal getting speed-merchant from Champs or league 1 for me please, of which there are plenty for once, no need to scrabble in the dirt for crumbs like last season with over-priced priskin.

It's tough to judge these decisions until we know who will be brought in to replace them. R Wright is our best keeper, but I understands the wages difference and his exit was expected. D Wright leaving is a worry, as others have said he's not spectacular but a good solid pro. I hope Roy has someone lined up.

Bad move to start messing about with a defence to much which has looked very solid feel sorry for D wright if he is to leave.
