Two-Goal Wickham Fires England Into Final
Two-Goal Wickham Fires England Into Final
Thursday, 27th May 2010 16:50

Town striker Connor Wickham netted both goals as England moved into the final of the European U17 Championships via a 2-1 victory over France in Liechtenstein this afternoon.

Wickham, previously without a goal in the competition, put England in front in the 23rd minute, hitting a left-footed shot across the keeper and into the corner of the net.

The Blues frontman made it two on 40 when he latched on to Conor Coady’s through ball before sending a low strike past the keeper.

France pulled a goal back after the break, but it wasn’t enough to stop Wickham and England from progressing into Sunday’s final (Eurosport2 UK, 5pm) where they will face Spain, who beat Turkey 3-1 in the other semi-final.

Wickham has now scored seven goals in 11 games at U17 level.

Well, if they face Spain that will be the real test! Can Connor outshine the wonderkids of Barcelona and Real Madrid? If so, we're talking about a potential superstar here.

Well done Connor... all us Ipswich fans are proud of you!

Double-edged sword this one, don't you think?
Really pleased for the lad ~ proud he's a Town player, representing his club so well.
However ~ this just means more of the 'big boys' will come sniffing with their big money offers.
Can't you just picture that dodgy, wide-boy spiv Redknapp, plotting?

chambersm, he may have played his first game under jim but keane is the one who has brought him through this season and given him the confidence to go out and play well.

chambersm - possibly - but your point is? I am merely pointing out that at the start of the season, Roy went on record to say it was Rhodes or Wickham ...

Roy then gradually introduced Conner as a sub in matches, gave him his debut and he grew from there. Eventually, as we all know he went on to produce an outstanding performance at the end of the season in front of 55,000 at St. james Park, Newcastle.

Okay - Jim may have given him a game, but I repeat, well done ROY for bringing this guy through. Excellent management. Brilliant.

you like roy keane too much, the players got talent in himself, roy wasnt exactly pulling the puppet strings....I could have brought him on with sub appearances and i wouldnt have said it was brilliant management

Some credit should perhaps go to Keane for playing Wickham so often when he wasn't scoring, although Counago, Priskin, Stead and others were not scoring many either and as Wickham clearly has big talent it would have been crazy not to give him a go. Perhaps Keane wanted to show he was willing to give youth a chance after the terrible decision to sell Rhodes. Anyway, I think Keane has given youngsters a fair go and I wouldn't critisise him for that. Youth has to be the way forward for Ipswich Town.

It was great management by Keane. But of course, people who hate him have to say that everything good about him came from Magilton, under which he played 2 games or something. Connor has got bags of talent, but Keane has kept his feet on the ground, help fight of premier league interest and turn him into a player who looks likely to score every time he plays, as he has shown here today.

Hopefully that has added to his price tag.
If a side come in with a good offer for him i see no reason why we shouldnt sell. Yes he is a great prospect. But I can't see him leading our front line next season and if we do get promoted, not the season after either. He has had a great impact so far and if a very good offer doesn't come in then it obviously makes sense to keep him. But some of the figures that have been linked to him sound very reasonable to me. But hey what do I know...

Chambersm - I think it is a fair, clear and true statement to say that categorically nobody on this forum agrees with your opinion on super keano. However "anti-keane" a person is even the most anti keane follower would have to agree it is ROY that brought Wickham through and also signed very decent loanees such as colback and murphy and made some very good transfers such as Brian Murphy who has a very good presence in goal with good shot stopping attributes, leadbitter who is a workhorse in midfield not afraid of anything, Delaney who speaks for himself, he has cone through incredibly as a centre half, shane o Connor who is a lad who has again cone through with a clear incredible full back talent and lee Barrett who did a very sturdy job in between the sticks.

Real fans stick by their manager, regardless of who he is or whether they like him or not because you support the club. You don't go to see the manager. You go to see Ipswich town who we all support. Let's get behind the lads properly this season and with a few decent sure signings we could be a real championship force this season

Surely you have completely contradicted yourself. You are exactly right that we don't go to see the manager, we go to see Ipswich. Therefore, if we're playing rubbish we look for reasons why. And RK must be held accountable for a lot of last season's dross. I'm a Town fan, not an RK fan. If Town are doing well then I'll be happy with RK, why wouldn't I be? But if we're rubbish then I'll say as much. Some people on here really have their head in the sand.

Yep Delaney has done well at centre-back - that's because he's spent 95% of his career at centre-back. Shame RK bought him as a left-back though....

Can't disagree with the other signings you mention (well, except both Murphys. One started well but looked disinterested after a few weeks and the other who looks incredibly suspect at commanding his area) but that still doesn't take away from the fact that we were generally rubbish last year and pretty much always awful to watch. I just don't know what some of you saw last year to get you so excited about this year. I hope you're right though as I've renewed my season ticket!

As for Wickham, RK did a good job with him, except at the start when he threw him in too much - playing a 16 year old with about 5 first team appearances on his own up front against WBA when the team had been awful was a terrible managerial decision, and could have ruined his confidence. At least RK seemed to learn from that though and did a much better job of brining him through in the second half of the season. But Wickham's talent is such that it is likely plenty of other managers would have done much the same this season anyway. As has been said, Magilton had already identified his talent too, so would likely have played him more this season too given a chance.

Conner is the type of player we need to get into and stay in the Prem. Selling players like that and replacing with moderate tallent at over the top prices will get us nowhere. I know we are not the biggest club, but we are far from being the smallest too, why do we put ourselfs down so much. I like to think that our ground, could be upgraded to around 35000 if ever the need arrose.
