Wright Set to Be Unveiled as Burley's First Signing
Wright Set to Be Unveiled as Burley's First Signing
Sunday, 27th Jun 2010 11:36

Released Town full-back David Wright will be unveiled as George Burley’s first Crystal Palace signing on Monday, according to a report in south London. Wright was not offered new terms by the Blues with his contract up at the end of the month and has agreed to join the Eagles.

The former Crewe and Wigan man, who had also been linked with Leeds and Charlton this summer, was in and out of the Town side last season and often operated in his less-favoured left-back role when he was in the team.

The versatile 30-year-old's opportunities on the right were limited after Roy Keane signed Liam Rosenior on loan from Reading, while Jim Magilton signed Moritz Volz from Fulham on a similar basis during 2008/09, although the German spent most of that season out injured.

Wright joined the Blues from the Latics for £200,000 in January 2007 and made 125 starts and three sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring five goals.

Good signing, should never have been released

With GB in charge what`s the betting cpfc with far less resources, will finish higher in the league then ITFC with Evans £m`s and Beano.

I think allowing Wright, an experienced, solid, reliable and versatile player, to leave for free may prove to be a mistake. No world beater perhaps, but a very useful part of the squad nontheless. We may well miss his versatility next season (unless of course RK signs someone equally versatile, but better, in which case happy days!)

I thought Wright was ok, as do most on here, However why did Jim and now Roy feel we needed a new right back. You never really know what goes on behind the scene. IMO I dont think he will be missed as we have players just as good who can fill in that role. Having said that if we do not buy a right back better than Wright we will be short in this area and have a big problem. I would have liked to see a right back in before we let him go.
But Roy has to be fair with Wright you cant just keep a player till to sign someone else.

I would have to agree that David Wright should NOT have been released, unless of course he was rumoured to be on £10K + per week.

This does put considerable pressure on Roy. I am still firmly supporting him, but alas he will need to soon start signing players. A right back / striker are a MUST. I am not blaming him for the lack of signings mind - as reading between the lines it would seem that ME wants to reduce the wage bill. Although I understand and agree with that - the likelihood now is that the potential new signings will not have time to bed in.

Snapped up by a proven sucessful manager?
It is easy to see why this club are releghation favorites next season.
I have written to the compilers of the oxford dictionary to change the word leeming to keenings.
You can all blindly jump over the cliff edge with him then.

Good solid professional but definitely slowed up after his injury and imo not good enough now. Good luck to him though and he will have an early chance to impress against us early in the season. God I hate going to that pits of a place

Oh Palace, you lucky lucky people....Burley's already done more work in a week than Keane's done in 2 months.

So where's our first signing then? And no one say any crap about the transfer window opening on the 1st of July, cos it hasn't stopped the rest of the league signing people.

Poor decision to let him go with no current replacement.

Should have been one of the first named on the teamsheet, but perhaps he stood up to RK and is then discarded...In my opinion he should have been the captain.
RK has let us down, I thought he could get some good players into the Club, but I fear he can only attract his old players, while letting our pearls (Rhoades) go.

Good luck David im sure you will do very well for palace under burley. A very hard working player who did give town his all! Keane is stupid for letting you go especially there is no likely replacement. If you had a bit of irish in you or played for sunderland there is no doubt you would be staying. The clock for keane is ticking!

I think Palace signing him goes to show that all this gossip about him being on £10K a week is untrue. Wright is 30 now and I am sure we could have negotiated a good deal with this experienced pro who wanted to stay here. We could still sign a first choice right back too, letting D.Wright compete for that place and provide cover at right-back and left-back (and centre back in an emergency). As things stand, we are reliant on a Keane signing being a success and that is worrying given his track record.

Well done tractorboybig! At last some wit on this board!

Last season - the most boring in living memory. This close season - the most boring in living memory. To paraphrase Bill - Once more unto the beach dear suffering blues - at least the sun is shining!

Rk has got to really get it right ...his signings have been very poor...Morris is a joke...Edwards is a has been, Priskin needs to become a man and as an Internatianal for his Country do it for us and become a potent force with the wonderkid Wicham. Pablo should play in the 'Gatesy' roll ...behind the front two.
Morris would find himself on the bench, unless he can do the same roll and start to score!!

Wright had something in common with Mick Mills (although i am not suggesting that Wright was international class) in that he was not always appreciated by town fans but our defence almost alwayse looked more secure when both these players were on in the pitch in ther respective eras.
