Southend Game Off?
Southend Game Off?
Monday, 5th Jul 2010 13:43

Town’s friendly at Southend on Friday could be called off, according to reports in Essex. The Shrimpers unveiled new management duo Paul Sturrock and Tommy Widdrington this morning, Steve Tilson having been relieved of his duties last week.

Southend, who are subject to a transfer embargo, may not be in a position to play Friday’s match with a report claiming they currently have only nine players.

Sturrock says he will speak to the Blues about the match: "I will have to have a chat with Ipswich as I am told we are supposed to be playing a game on Friday."

The cancellation of Friday’s match would be a blow to Town with the club unable to arrange two further games planned for the Holland trip. That would leave the match at PSV and the home fixtures with West Ham and a Spurs XI as the only friendlies against professional opposition during pre-season.

A full list of Town’s pre-season fixtures can be found here.

How is this Town's fault, as some of the posts above suggest? Numpties.
Big pain though. Was looking forward to a trip to the seaside this Friday.

Surely we could lend them a couple of our surplus players. Wouldn't it be good for, say, Lisbie and Quinn to play ninety minutes?

I've just sent an email to Southend volentearing my services so that thew game can go ahead.. Reckon I'll be OK if Keane chooses to play Lisbie at CF - should have an easy game......>!

Get some trialists in Sturrock to make up numbers and the problem is solved.

Last season Clegg pointedly remarked that he would set about organising a proper programme of pre-season games well ahead of time and as early as April in order to ensure better preparation. Well, irrespective of the Shrimpers' predicament, this policy has clearly failed - not the best of signs for the new season.

Perhaps we can still arrange some matches against the usual suspects -Brentford, Colchester Utd etc. - as additional fixtures are critical to ensure that the
Super Blues are ready to go for it on 7th August...

I have read some really pathetic negative rubbish on here over the past 6 to 8 weeks. But this has to top the list. Are some - apparently fans - suggesting this is Roy Keane's fault? How on earth is it? Suggest you go and support another club. Town have arranged four decent fixtures over the coming weeks (there are only 5 weeks to the start of the season) - so if Southend pull out of one, thenI totally fail to see how anyone at Ipswich can be held accountable. We played too many games last year - and with a mixture of non league fixtures and 4 decent games, it seemed a good balance.

I think some of the negative comments are regarding the inability to arrange freindlies after the PSV game rather than Southend possibly cancelling due to lack of players.

Oh Boy you pro Keaners have really got your knickers in a twist as usual, nobody is blaming Keane, what they are doing is saying (rightly) that the superb pre season we were promised, hasn't materialised, like the new signings and promised promotion in two seasons! I'm not saying Keane is resposible for this but the club is. There is obviously something wrong between Keane & Clegg/Evans, even though I don't much care for Keane I feel sorry for him at the moment, the club needs to sort itself out & we fans need to support it through tough times, but some of what Clegg, Evans & Keane promised us just has failed to materialise......so sort it out guys!! It's sad we may not be playing Brighton but at least were not in their position.......yet!

It is not Ipswich's fault if Southend cancel of course.

Forget the Spurs XI (on the night the main Spurs team play elsewhere), we only have pre-season games about two professional clubs: PSV and West Ham. That does seem poor preparation for the start of the Championship season.

Norwich are playing Dagenham and Redbridge, Newcastle, Lincoln, Everton and some smaller teams. Also, they have made their SIXTH signing (John Ruddy from Everton).

Why don't we loan a few youngsters to Southend, they are in League 2 now, I think, it could be a good opportunity for our young players that aren't ready to break into our first team yet to get games and develop.

Despite the impact for town (missing a pre-season game), I think the bad side of the story here is Southend only have 9 players. It seems that so many clubs are barely surviving at the moment. I can see quite a few going under if a shake up of the regulations governing football are not changed.
