Civelli in Strong Squad for Newmarket Trip
Civelli in Strong Squad for Newmarket Trip
Monday, 5th Jul 2010 15:22

Argentinian midfielder Luciano Civelli will finally return to action for the first time in 16 months on Tuesday when manager Roy Keane takes a strong squad of 22 players to Newmarket Town for the first friendly of pre-season (KO 7.45pm). Civelli has been out of action since damaging knee ligaments in the home game with Burnley in March 2009.

Keane told the club site: "It's good that Luca is back with us and out on the training field.

"The boy has had a bad injury and he's had to be patient. He still has a long way to go yet, but he's making progress and that's obviously good news for Luca and for the football club."

Town will field a different side in each half at Newmarket with only a couple of first teamers likely to be missing. The squad returned to training last Monday with only Tommy Smith absent, the New Zealand international having been given an extra three weeks off after his exploits at the World Cup.

Keane added: "The players have had a good break and we're looking forward to getting going now.

"Our pre-season will be a lot more settled than last year and hopefully the players we brought in will have a better start to the season than they did last year."

Tickets for the Newmarket game are priced at £6 for adults and £3 for children. Details of how to get to Newmarket's Cricket Field Road ground can be found here.

A full list of Town’s pre-season fixtures can be found here. The planned match at Southend on Friday could be cancelled.

Squad: Jack Ainsley, Troy Brown, Alex Bruce, Luciano Civelli, Pablo Couñago, Damien Delaney, Carlos Edwards, Owen Garvan, Colin Healy, Luke Hyam, Grant Leadbitter, Arran Lee-Barrett, Lee Martin, Gareth McAuley, Brian Murphy, David Norris, Shane O'Connor, Jaime Peters, Tamás Priskin, Alan Quinn, Jon Stead and Jon Walters.

This is really good news. I'm looking forward to seeing him get back to his best; would be a major boost for us this year and would be equivelent to one of those signings RK said he wanted to make but seems to be struggling to do.

Good news about Civelli's return. It will be interesting to see which players used (most of them except Lisbie I guess) and how well they perform. It's early days of course, but hopefully the heads of the transfer listed boys won't drop.

What does Keane mean by "players we brought in"? We haven't brought in any new players, Civelli aside, so therefore it should be a more settled pre-season by default.

Good job Civelli's back..looks like he's the only "new" player Keane'll be getting in this summer.

Bit worrying there is no Wickham we cannot let him go! Really weird but I've gotta feeling that Pablo is gonna have a really good season.

Phil, where did you get the squad list from as official site does not give it. Like others I'm surprised no Billy Clark and Wickham - Euro U17's was a while ago now, he better not be sold! He's the only thing thats slightly exciting about ITFC next season!

I would not be suprised if Wickham was sold. I hope that is NOT the case but I have a feeling Keane wants to flog him, get him back on loan and sign some players with the cash. He may even sign Chopra with the cash but I hope not. Chopra has baggage and I think he is past his best so Keano is bound to snap him up as Keano is clearly dimwitted when it comes to signing players.

Joeippy01.... Oh I hope not, I really hope not! I can't see Keane wanting to sell him, he's not stupid and knows he would loose support from many of his current backers if he did... The only explanation is that it is a Evans/Clegg decision.
Although in saying that it really does depend on the fee... if we really have been offered £8m for him, that's a great deal of money for a 17 year old who hasn't yet proved himself in the first team. yes he shows bags and bags of promise and like many others, I'm sure he will succeed, but he hasn't yet...
Aghhhhh... let's hope it's all wrong and we keep him :)
