Magilton Linked With Swansea
Magilton Linked With Swansea
Tuesday, 6th Jul 2010 09:02

Former Town boss Jim Magilton is being linked with the vacant manager’s job at Swansea. Paulo Sousa resigned from the role yesterday and is set to join Leicester City.

Magilton, who has been out of work since leaving QPR in December, reportedly faces competition from Exeter manager Paul Tidsdale, Wigan assistant boss Graeme Jones, Wrexham’s Dean Saunders, Brighton’s Gus Poyet and Sheffield United coach Gary Speed.

Meanwhile, ex-Town frontman Dean McDonald is spending the week on trial with the Swans. McDonald, 24, scored 35 goals in 53 starts and three sub appearances for Farnborough last season as they carried off the Zamaretto Premier League title.

Since leaving the Blues in 2006 the former Arsenal trainee has played for Gillingham, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Rushden and Diamonds, Grays Athletic, Northwich Victoria and Tooting and Mitcham United, joining his current side last summer.

And in further Welsh football news, Cardiff City have been hit by a transfer embargo due to their ongoing struggle to pay their tax bills. HMRC has lodged another winding-up order against the club, this time relating to a £1.3 million PAYE debt, with the Bluebirds due in the High Court on 11th August. The club claim they will pay by the end of the week.

Cardiff's continuing problems are likely to be of interest to the Blues with striker Michael Chopra understood to be top of Roy Keane's summer wish-list.

Elsewhere, reported Town target Stephen McManus is said to be close to completing a £1.8 million move to his former loan club Middlesbrough. The Celtic defender was mentioned in connection with the Blues earlier in the summer, having turned down the chance to join Town on loan a year ago.

Seriously, why would any club appoint Jim Magilton?

PimsNumber1 added 09:59 - Jul 6
Because coming 8th or 9th isnt a bad record and he did ok at QPR until the incident.
Looking back and I was not a fan of his at the end of his time here but am man enough to admit was he that bad ?

The footy got boring and long ball--ditto Keane
The transfers were generally poor -ditto
The team selection was erratic with players played out of position -ditto

And we were in the bottom 3 for a chunk of the dseason last year --not ditto

I really do hope that theres plenty of behind the scenes work going on to get chopra, lets kick them whilst they're down, like everyone did to us. (Chalton)

Good luck jim.

Let's hope we get Chopra.

SiBo added 10:50 - Jul 6
I heard we agreed a fee for Chopra... He met with RK and was keen to join us... then met with Evans/Clegg and a contract couldn't be agreed...  Not sure if it was him being too greedy or us being too stingy... We will probably never know!

35 goals in 53 games for Dean McDonald? Blimey. Farnborough must keep the ball on the floor, I reckon.

Shame we still don't have Jim instead of the witless wonder who currently resides in the hot seat !!!!

Good Luck to Jimbo, a smashing down to earth bloke and great servant to ITFC as a player, sadly that player to manager thing at the same club rarely works. He will in time become a good manager as he has the drive and ambition that's needed, just a pity it didn't work out here. As I live near Exeter City I have been amazed at the great work done buy Paul Tidsdale, mentioned for the swansea job. He would make a great replacement for Keane, he's a players man, nice bloke, believes in attacking/attractive football, is young and ambitious, he brought Exeter up from the conference on back to back promotions with no money to spend and some shrewd purchases including Marcus Stewart!!

On the day Marty McFly landed in the future - 6th July 2010, I for one hope Jim does get a decent position like this to get him back up and running. Did "ok" for us and unlucky at QPR, so why not?

I am getting nervous about Middlesbrough - they are buying like crazy. It seems they will be one of the top contenders coming season:(

Georgi - Middlesbrough have a crap manager just like we do so it should be an even contest.

Personally I don't think Jim did that bad a job considering it was his first..finishing 1 point out of the play-offs in only his second season was pretty darn brilliant considering he had virtually no money..it's when Marcus Evans came in and started flashing the cash that things started going tits up - money doesn't always equal success.

Anyone remember the 6-0 thrashing of Bristol City and the 13 game winning home run?..some people have very short memories..i'd take Jim back every day of the year over the current idiot.

Like him or not, you never doubted Jim's commitment - and that goes a long way in sport... ..and life in general

Good Luck to him.. I wanted him to succeed with us a but in the end I wanted him to leave, but we don't seem to have done better.. we ended up lower in the table and the football isn't nearly as appealing..

hope it's a success for him at Swansea but if he gets the job he should tell the clubs' supporters to stop behaving like kn*b ends on away days.. Swansea and Cardiff were the two most obnoxious sets of supporteres I have seen at PR for a very long time..

LightningBoy...
wasn't the 13 game winning run the same time we couldn't buy a win away? As a Dad of 3 lttle un's I don't get to go to too many away games these days, so I did love that years Home record, but it still didn't get us anywhere as we couldn't do anything away... And if memory serves me right, the following year we sorted the away form... but lost the home form. Sods law I suppose... I do think Magic Jim was badly treated by the club, but don't view him through "Blue and White" tinted specs... He had his issues as well as the current boss, but whilst he was boss I supported him.

Oh dear - some people actually think Jim is a good manager and actually want him to still be in charge at Ipswich. THREE seasons - nothing achieved. I wish these people would give Roy the same amount of time that they gave Jim. They also have very short memories - Jim's first season in charge was not brilliant - but he improved second year, before failing to do better in the third year - where he was rightly sacked. If you are going to moan about Roy, perhaps consider giving him the same time as Jim - so by my reckoning you owe Roy this season at least.

Jaso99: I agree with you... the point I was making was that I supported Jim whilst he was our manager and didn't join the Jim out brigade (I thought he was a good appointment when he got the job, then slowly changed my mind with time and although you wouldn't have heard me calling for his head, wasn't that unhappy when he was let go... even though I didn't agree with how it was done... not the way I think ITFC should behave) , just as I won't join the RK out brigade either... For god's sake the guy has had 1 season! If Bobby Robson had only begiven 1 season his record would have been 18th and just clear of relegation... 2 seasons and it would be 18th/19th and 2 seasons just clear of relegation... it wasn't until the 3rd season that he'd moulded the team how he wanted it, got rid of the bing time charlies who thought they were bigger and better than him and presto, 4th...RK must be given longer than a single season.
