Burley Hopeful He Can Take Garvan to Palace
Burley Hopeful He Can Take Garvan to Palace
Thursday, 22nd Jul 2010 10:59

Crystal Palace boss George Burley is reported to be hoping to have completed the signing of Town midfielder Owen Garvan by the end of next week. The ex-Blues manager made a second offer for the Republic of Ireland U21 international earlier in the week, having had his initial bid rebuffed.

Having offered £100,000, the figure currently on the table is variously reported as £150,000 or £200,000. Town are understood to want £400,000 for the 22-year-old, who is contracted until the summer of 2011.

Burley confirmed his move for Garvan: “We have a number of offers in with clubs for players and loans at the moment and he is one we are very keen on.

"We have a budget for wages and transfers and originally we thought we would stick to loans and free transfers, but certain players you need to pay for.

"I'm hoping by this time next week we should have a few more in and a far clearer picture of where we are."

Garvan is one of the eight players the Blues have made available for transfer.

Good luck to you Owen - we will miss your flair and football brain as there is not too much of talent like that left at Ipswich now!

danesmill, I assume you made a typo in you comment. You said 'flair' but I assumes you mean 'flairs' as in trousers because one thing he doesn't have is flair. Making a few good passes every couple of months doesn't constitute flair. Has always been an average player at Ipswich, with suggestions that he could be much better, but has never stepped up to the plate. Time for him to go I think.

He could have been good. Has the talent, but not the desire

Suffolksam, Chopra doesn't score enough!?
Up there with the most ridiculous posts I have ever seen.

A problem with signing Chopra on a larger wage than is already the limit at Town is that other players will think 'Why is he getting all that & I'm not?' which could lead to an unhappy dressing room and problems when the club wants players to renew contracts and doesn't offer than a similar wage to Chopra.
And if Dave Jones takes the Fulham job (which he is currently favourite for) then any deals will be on hold until a new manager is recruited to replace him and he determines who he does & doesn't want at Cardiff.

One thing most ITFC fans have always lacked is football knowledge.
This has never been more apparent than their lack of appreciation of our most gifted player.
Good luck Owen - you deserve better

BlueKnight: if I remember rightly you are one of the ones who comes on here and slags off the posters who dare to criticise RK. Well, if Garvan made one wayward, but not totally terrible pass in his entire career for us, he'd still have acheived more for Ipswich than RK has so far. So why so quick to defend RK and yet to quick to slag Garvan? Crazy.

I just can't understand that attitude at all. Surely the same argument fits for both. Either we can criticise or we can't, you can't do both.

As for Garvan, despite him never quite fullfilling his promise he is still, by a long, long way, our most creative midfielder. People mention as a sidenote how good his passing ability is, as if it's unimportant. Well, how else are the strikers going to get a killer pass to them?

Chopra relies on making runs and having the ball fed to him. He can't score if he doesn't get the ball to him in the right areas. Why does everyone seem so oblivious to this?

So why spend millions and millions on a player, break the wage structure, risk ruining any team harmony we may have, and not put a player on the pitch with him with the ability to give him the ball where he wants it?

Why else do you think we had so many shots last year? We kept getting to the edge of the box and having no-one there to unlock the defence so we hit a long effort.

But hey, it was great to watch. Oh, hang on......

These_aren't_the_days: I think you'll find that football is actually all about running around a lot. then everyone thinks you try hard and that's far more important than having any skill.

naa: its true - those players who have more ability & therefore need less time on the ball are deemed lazy by the mindless majority. Unfortunately our manager seems to appreciate those who 'run around a lot' & puts himself in that category

Before people slate Keano; the best spell Garvan has had at town has been under Keano, as in games to assists ratio. Fact!

Naa... These arent the days... totally agree not much to add .
A very sad day to let a young gifted passer of the ball go because he doesnt fly around the pitch and dive into tackles after spending the summer publicly chasing a player like Derry and knocking the owners for not making the deal happen ,to me shows what type of football we will be aiming for next season .
Good luck Owen if you go hopefully under George you will prosper or wait 2 months and see who takes over

How anyone can say Garvan is a bad player is beyond me, some fans are so un educated in terms of football, i saw a post on the same subject a few days back claiming Garvan isnt the type of player we need, we need a player like Magilton to come and take the ball off the back four! Which is the one thing Garvan gives us! a confidence on the ball, playing little passes to create space and play a defence splitting ball. We have got nobody else who can create things in the midfield like Garvan the rest are workmen, Garvan creates chances and if we're going to go anywhere this season his presence could be key. We will be far worse off without Garvan in our squad.

The team Town that Burley took to the Premiership was a passing team, in this respect he knows more than most on this board and knows a bargain when he sees one. A terrible decision to let Garvan go.

All together now: huff, puff, hoof.

Gutted.

I think Garvan has had enough of a chance to prove himself over the years.
I like Garvan but I dont think he has it in him to help take Ipswich up. I feel we have players who are similar to Garvan, so if by selling him it frees up money to buy a Chopra, then it's worth letting him go. It the same with Counago one of my fav players but i feel has had his day and will only play a bit part for the club.
IMO he can like Garvan play a part in the club, but if by selling we get replacements that will take us up so be it.
With the news of Keane going for the Sunderland keeper, I think he will be the number one with Murphy on the bench and I feel both are better than Wright and will be better place to keep us in the Prem when we go up. Wright has been a great servant to the club but people forget he was very quick to leave us for Arsenal and then turned us down when West Ham offered more money (dont blame him) Remember players have less sentiment than the clubs do. only my view

Name me one Man United player over the last 20 years who didnt 'run around a lot'. And of course all their players have been talentless haven't they, cos only talentless players need to put effort in.
Also, having 'character' does not mean that you are a hatchet man as some would have us believe.
