Bristol City Linked With Stead Move
Bristol City Linked With Stead Move
Friday, 23rd Jul 2010 16:33

Bristol City are reported to have made a £200,000 bid for Town striker Jon Stead. The former Sheffield United, Blackburn and Huddersfield man was amongst the eight players the Blues recently made available for transfer.

Earlier in the summer, Town had agreed a £400,000 fee with Stead’s former loan club Coventry for the 27-year-old, but the move broke down after the Sky Blues sacked manager Chris Coleman. Stead’s hometown side Huddersfield, where he started his career, have also been linked.

This morning, Town boss Roy Keane revealed that the Blues were in talks with three clubs who are interested in current squad members.

Two of those possible deals are likely to be Owen Garvan’s proposed move to Crystal Palace and Alex Bruce’s expected switch to Sheffield United, while the third could be any number of potential deals with QPR understood to be interested in Jon Walters, Swansea in Tamás Priskin and Millwall and Charlton amongst various clubs believed to be chasing Kevin Lisbie.

Meanwhile, the Blues will not be entering a reserve side in the LB Group Suffolk Premier Cup this season. Former boss Jim Magilton revived Town’s involvement in the competition in 2006, but it has often proved difficult to fit in the fixtures. The Blues won last season’s competition, beating Needham Market 4-1 in the final at Portman Road.

Why are we practically giving players away?...£200k?!

How can we let Stead go for £200,000 and be willing to buy Chopra for £4 million when they have scored the same amount of goals in the same league over the past 2 seasons !!!
It is insane business and is not about footballing issues

surco why do you try and sugar coat evrything with rediculous stats should we sell conner wickham for less than stead as he has only scored a few goals? michael chopra is clearly another class compared to stead and you dont even know we are buying him let alone for £4m

Steady on Keneo! cough cough, he worth a lot more than that. he should be kept for a backup striker is good champ striker. You need more than two good strikers, if we ever get a new striker we would still need him as cover. Counago is the dross we need to clear.

Stead has found his level. Mid-lower championship at best.
Keeping him would be nuts.

Chorpa, on the other hand, will be a great signing, he is top championship level.

serco72 - you can't compare the two of them chopra will find the net more consistently than stead, and a chopra/wickham partnership will put fear in all defence's we come up against.

A high wage earner and if we want to bring other players in then he needs to go. Not prolific enough. If you like your players to be brilliant for two or three games and then do absolutely nothing for eight or nine then Stead is your man. Not good enough. £200K seems a little low - £500K perhaps nearer the mark, but getting rid of his wages would be a big plus. People moan about Roy, but why on earth Jim paid £1.25M for this guy after one game of his three month loan is still beyond me.

p.s. you can not compare Chopra (a key player for Cardiff and 16 goals last season) to Stead (a player surplus to requirements and 6 goals for this) - the value is very much based on how much the player is wanted by the club, when you are looking to off-load deadwood, then it's more about the wages you save - hence that's why Lisbie will probably go on a free.

Sorry Surco but if you are going to state "facts" get them right. Stead, In the past two seasons with Town has played 63 games scored 19 goals. Chopra played 44 games last season and scored 19 goals. So what Chopra scored in one season it actually took Stead two seasons! I dont know how that is the same? Also taking Steads whole career into perspective his most prolific stage was when he was in league two unfortunatly ever since then he hasn't been able to replicate his Huddersfield form. In my eyes that says it all. Chopra is Championship and Stead is League one at best (and thats being kind!).

Are we in administration? Lots of very low bids for our players. Good to see some movement in both directions. Fingers crossed that the 3 incoming are better than these bargain basement players on the way out.

I think i'd prefer to keep Stead as back up rather than take a measley 200k.
Priskin must be on high wages aswell and would command a higher fee.
Also if he is determined he can score like he did the match after he got sent off against Crystal Palace.
I remember him saying I knew I had to score goals to make it up to the fans for getting sent off.

robdaful Why should we keep a high earner as back up are you insane?

Would have been a handy squad player, but his wages are probably a bit on the high side for that and JS wants first team football, so probably a good move all round. Good luck Jonny!

Whatever fee we receive will ultimately be judged on how JS performs next season and on whoever RK brings in to replace him.

Jas0999 - I thought we paid £600k?

Robdaful- "Also if he is determined he can score like he did the match after he got sent off against Crystal Palace." Why would we want to keep a player that, in your own words, is lazy? Surely his high wage should be enough to make him play week in week out like that.

I thought we paid £600k for him as well... Stead flatters to decieve... isn't a striker... we should let him go.
The reason I say he isn't a striker is that he plays too wide/deep for a striker... he's a support forward, no more. We need an established striker to partner Whickham and Stead doesn't fit the bill... if the reports that he is one of the high wage earners is true... then the best option is to move him on.

Would like to keep Walters, think he has done well for the club, Stead, Garvan and Priskin can go if it means that helps pay for Chopra

Jon Stead is clearly a player with limitations, but aside from Connor Wickham (who is only 17), he is probably the best striker we have. Remember what a blow it was when he got injured around the turn of the year? I am not adverse to selling him, but surely he is worth more than £200K?

Why do people think he is a "big wage earner"? He joined us for £600K from another Championship club so I doubt he is on collosal wages.

Hopefully we will sign some strikers but at the moment my question is: who will score goals for Ipswich next season?!?

robdaful added 18:27 - Jul 23
Well we can't keep, Pablo, Lisbie, Stead, Wickham and Priskin. And bring in new strikers. They are all on high wages. Probably not Wickham, but then you don't know if that how Keane got him to sign.
As I've said before I know Pablo. And he said he will stay and see out his contract.
That is one less person who might go. Priskin and Lisbie are better options to go. For money we can get for them and the wages they would free up.
If we could bring in acouple of strikers then by all means Stead can go but I don't want us to be short if anyone gets injured or suspened.

robdaful added 18:31 - Jul 23
Plus Lisbie, Priskin, Pablo and Stead are all seen as lazy by some supporters.
I'm just thinking if Stead was managed by a diffrent manager than Keane (seeing they just don't get on) then he could do better.
Stead was top scorer the season before last under Jim.
Because JIm stuck by him.
