Bruce Set to Complete Sheffield United Switch
Bruce Set to Complete Sheffield United Switch

Central defender Alex Bruce is believed to have travelled to Yorkshire last night to formalise his move to Sheffield United. TWTD first broke the news of Bruce’s switch to the Blades on Monday.

The ex-Birmingham man, who was close to joining former loan side Leicester until manager Nigel Pearson moved on to Hull, is set to undergo a medical and hold talks regarding personal terms today.

The Blues are likely to receive a fee in the region of £200,000 for the Republic of Ireland international, who was on the list of eight players made available for transfer by the club earlier in the summer.

Meanwhile, skipper Jon Walters didn't play in last night’s cricket match in Chantry Park [Update: he was amongst those watching].

Walters has been suffering from a virus, although was expected to play in the match won comfortably by Ipswich and East Suffolk. However, the 26-year-old has also been linked with moves to QPR and Stoke this summer and may well be one of the players whose future is currently under discussion.

Elsewhere, former loanee Liam Rosenior has opted against rejoining Bristol City on trial.

Bye then, Alex. You'll complement Morgan's style nicely!!!
As for Jon Walters, if it's good money then we'd be silly not to accept it. Nice bloke, very good on his day, but not the player he was two seasons ago (pre-injury).

Good news. We will need to bring in another centre back however, as with Delaney out what happens if Smith or McAuley get injured? We have young Eastman, but I think it makes sense to bring in another central defender. Of course, strikers should be our priority and we also need a right-back, and ideally a pacey creative midfielder.

Goo business. Signed on a free but firstly fell out with Jim before Roy gave him a secon chance. But injury problems and some shocking games has meant that Roy is absolutely right to cash in on Bruce. Realistic transfer fee and a player surplus to requirements. Good deal all round.

It is looking more and more likely that Walters is going to leave - if we are able to use that money to buy a decent striker then great. It looks as though one of the players we are going to sign is Kennedy. Assuming Fullop is the other permanent deal Roy was talking about, then I can't see a striker on the horizon. The one year loan will presumably be a centre half - particularly if the Bruce deal goes through.

more importantly than profit, he will be off the wage bill £15,000 a week prob as he was holding out for a better deal when he extended his contract.

Will be an excellent deal if it comes off. Good wholehearted player but only 'good' and prone to errors and reckless challenges. In my opinion his is not big enough for a centre back so no complaints if this goes through. Still need a replacement though as Tommy Smith despite his world cup performances not yet quite up to the mark.

Boy I'm glad you're not in charge!

Sounds like good business to me and the majority of others.

Always gave 100% but he wasnt great, similar to naylor in a way! In regards to this transfer although i dont think hes great would we get someone better/level ability for this sort of money? Seems to be the way looking at all our players who are linked with exits though.

Finally got rid of the so called fans favorite. He was always overated! The only reason he ever made those so called heroic tackles was because of his inability to mark a player and his positioning is dreadful!

Nick is absolutely right, he was constantly trying to recover from his own mistakes.

Personally, I would play both Smith and Balkestien ahead of Bruce as a centre half… We let Balkestien go as he wasn't good enough, so that pretty much makes my point. Good business to get rid of him. Yes, he had the passion and the grrrrr factor, that's why RK made him captain, but just didn't have the quality I'm afraid… League 1 defender, and no better. Like him for his attitude and wished a few others in the squad had it, but sorry, not good enough for where we want to be.
