Jones Confirms Kennedy Deal
Jones Confirms Kennedy Deal
Sunday, 25th Jul 2010 01:30

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has confirmed that left-back Mark Kennedy is set to join the Blues. News of Town's move for the former Irish international first broke on Friday.

Jones says Kennedy will sign a two-year deal at Portman Road with the sides understood to have agreed a £75,000 fee: "Sparky was offered a two-year contract at Ipswich and they came in with an offer. We think it’s good business for us considering he's 35 [sic] and with only a year on his contract. It's also a sensible move for him, so it makes sense bearing in mind those two factors.”

Kennedy, 34, is believed to have been at Portman Road on Friday and Saturday to discuss personal terms with the move likely to be completed early in the week.

Meanwhile, Jones says Michael Chopra’s comments regarding Cardiff’s current situation have been overhyped: "Chops was foolish to say what he said. He thought he was helping out but he did it the wrong way. He knows he's made a mistake.

"I think his performance today [in a 2-1 friendly defeat at Notts County] showed how committed he is to the club and he's hurting because things aren't going our way right now. Sometimes you've got to put up and shut up though and that's what he's done this afternoon.

"It's been made a bigger issue than what it is - what we want now is to start hearing some positive things come out. There's so much rubbish being written about us at the moment in general."

Used to be a good player and this signing probably comes 4 years too late. we will see though, his experience for our youngsters will be really important.

I really we do pull out all the stops to get Chopra. I'm excited about the new season. However I had a look at the table and I reckon this is going to be the hardest the championship has ever been. There isn't a team that I think will be easy. However bring it on.

The thing is with Kennedy is that he is alot better than O'connor and the fact that people try and dispute this fact is ridiculous.

Do people think he will be first choice left back or back-up?

I'm thinking he will keep O'Connor in and keep Kennedy as backup

@SeriouslyDelusional - I think it will be more like master and apprentice with Kennedy as first choice in the first season and O'Connor progressive over the two years of his contract to take over as he approaches retirement. So that's the left sorted for now, let's get a right back and a striker!

Good bit of business this. Nice and cheap and a player with a hell of a lot of experience. He was in cardiffs team a fair amount last season and they ended up in the play offs. I agree with above posts that we have to do everything we possibly can to get Chopra.

A decent addition - experienced and versatile - cover and competition for both Luca and O'Connor. Left side of the field always the tricky one for any side - now we have cover and options. And for peanuts... This purchase - from a side who NEED to sell - is a no-brainer.

well now I only think it would be only fair to make him feel at home with chopra coming ;)

They need to sell , yes, but 75k for nothing is good business for them. They have plenty of back up and the guy is 34 ish and was not in the team every game either.

cardiff like us need to get players off the wage bill, like us but for different reasons. if they had a choice i believe they would like to have kept him. £75000 is a bargin, as long as his wages are fair.

At last we seem to have a player that can take a decent dead ball. The first since...gulp....Darren Currie....

All in all a sound signing,,,, Delivers a set piece and can add some experience to the back four... Looking forward to some more action from monday.. in's and out's.... Think Keane is holding firm and targeting Chopra as No1 so we may have to be patient on that one,,,

played 36 times for cardiff last season (for the record) and in the modern game 34 is not over the hill as some are suggesting. 75k is loose change in the modern market

Sorry Guys. Don't agree. This signing is twelve months too late. Good player in his day but he can only be a short term solution to what has been a long term problem. I'm pleased to have him on board but don't see him as a pivotal figure in the months ahead. Our recruitment policy is a shambles. We need clever signings to give us a bit of a spark. This is not one of them. Can't see how people can see that this is progessive.

I'm not negative normally but this is not what I was expecting at the start of the summer.

We're giving him a TWO year contract?! Taking into account his wages, this probably makes him a £1M investment so I really hope it comes off.

Like someone said, he may be 34, but he played in 36 games for a team that got to the playoff final. Good business.

Has to be a good buy . He gives us experience and someone for O'Connor to learn from as he is the future . Can be a good two year investment !

Maybe This is the sort of player O'Connor needs as a role model player to learn the trade from. Ok Kennedy is 34years old and maybe "over the hill", but for 75k it's not breaking the bank and may prove to pay off if it means O'Connor gets to shadow kennedy for a season or two.
Like others has said, thats LB sorted, I still think RB definitely requires strenghtening. I like Peters alot, but can he handle being the only RB in the squad all season with little natural cover for him? I don't think so.
People say we should of offered Rosenior a contract. The problem their was he was offered one in January which he turned down, saying he wanted to keep his options open till the summer. Keane took a dislike to this, if Rosenior wouldn't commit then, he was not interested at all, only wanting players that was fully committed to Ipswich Town.
I don't know what other fans feel about this but, I feel MC is a position that needs to be looked at. If Norris or Leadbitter get injured, who would be the natural replacement if Garvan goes which looks increasingly likely. Alan Quinn? Colin Healy!? Last season we had plenty of cover with players like Trotter, Colback, etc.
A new striker is of paramount importance but I'm not getting my hopes up on Chopra joining us, and I hope Keane has other idea's as well and not investing all his time just on Chopra. If Stead and Priskin go, what leaves just Pablo and Wickham.
Hope we have a clearer picture in the next week or so of what players are going and coming in. Keane and Clegg best be putting in the overtime!

Can anyone now tell me the logic in letting David Wright go!? We still have no recognised right back in the squad. Jamie Peters, and....?

John_Warks_Tash added 15:14 - Jul 25
keaneish- I still don't understand the logic myself even now. I've heard fans say it was to reduce the wage bill, but surely Wrighty wasn't one of the top earners like Ricahrd Wright was!? D.Wright was Mr Consistant and a bloody good professional. Ok he's lost pace now but surely Keane should of offered him another year contract for cover?

So is he 34 or 35? Keane your a joke. And anyone who thinks this will be good for O'Connor is wrong, he needs games not having his confidence knocked by some knackered has-been getting in the side in front of him every week. Or is this our new youth policy? Brilliant.

I agree that we need stregnthening in central midfield, as even if Norris and Leadbitter avoid injury it is almost certain that they will both be suspended at some time during the season. Keane is obviously also weary of this having bidded for Perch and, if we belive the papers, being interested in deary and Nicky Butt.

We have now hopefully sorted out the left hand side, plenty of options there with Civelli, O'Conner and Kennedy all potential left backs and midfielders, with Martin and Hourihane also fighting for the left mid spot. We also seem strong enough on the right side of midfield with Walters the obvious choice, although Edwards, who will hopefully have a better second season having flattered to decieve after some early promise last season, may push him for that spot. Right back seems our weakest spot at the moment with, errm, no natural right-backs, although Edwards and obviously Peters can do a job there is neccessary, as can Bruce, although it seems he is on the way out. We have been linked with Finnan, who is one of the most experienced defenders around and would be a great signing, though I would like to see a younger, natural defender come in if possible, though that would only be as well as a more experienced on like Finnan.

Finally, arguably the most important position on the pitch is the place we have been weakest over the last few years- up front. We have a great young player in Wickham, though I believe we need 2 new strikers- one to partener him, one to provide competition with him, so not too much pressure is placed on him. We currently have a number of strikers at the club: Wickham, Stead, Priskin, Pablo, Walters and Lisbie. Walters is obviouslt at his best in midfield, which leaves us with Stead, Priskin and Pablo, who on last years showing are not up to partenering Wickham, and Lisbie, who has got to be the worst ever player to have made a career out of playing football. I believe we should keep one of Stead and Priskin, although we seem to be lumbered with Pabs, who I do like, and Lisbie, who I most ceratinly don't. If we could get half a million for Stead or Priskin, that could go towards getting us another striker, hopefully Chopra, and the wages could pay for a decent player on loan from the prem. I believe then we would have a good strike force.
