Liverpool Linked With Wickham
Liverpool Linked With Wickham
Sunday, 25th Jul 2010 13:56

Liverpool are the latest club to be eyeing a possible move for Town striker Connor Wickham, according to one of Sunday’s papers. New Reds boss Roy Hodgson is a long-time admirer of England U17 international with his former club Fulham amongst those most interested in the youngster before he signed his two-year professional contract in April.

While Hodgson may well rate Wickham, Liverpool’s current financial situation would presumably prevent them from paying the sort of fee the Blues would want for an inexperienced 17-year-old.

Last week Town were claimed to have put a £10 million price-tag on the Hereford-born frontman with Spurs believed to have made offers of £5 million and £8 million earlier in the summer and Arsenal understood to be monitoring the situation.

On Tuesday Wickham reiterated his desire to remain with the Blues, while chief executive Simon Clegg has said the striker is an “integral part of the squad”.

Don't be too quick to dismiss these stories. Liverpool are close to new owners (hence Christian Purslow going to Majorca to advise Torres) and there will be a long queue willing to take a reasonable bet on CW. If the offer of 10M with guaranteed loans of young up and coming players don't be surprised if he does move.

Every player has his price and with sell on clauses and bonuses for achievement built in, the offer could be too good to refuse. Bear in mind a 2 and a half year contract can soon come and go and maybe taking the cash now may be a wise move. I would like to see him stay but I fear the pressure will become to great as the window closes.

The Sunday Times is today linking Mesut Ozil with a £10m move to Arsenal. This puts a Wickham sale into perspective, if we can cash in on a 17 year old's inflated value I think we should. My only worry is that, given Keane's record in the transfer market, the money could soon be blown.

wickham is only young how many players have gone on to prove themselves after leaving us best to stay and get first team football under his belt. see how the first couple of months go and offer him a new deal so if we do sell we get a nice fee. up the town

If it is true that three of the biggest teams in the country get into a bidding war for Wickham then it can only be a good thing for us as the price gets pushed up and may provide us funds to buy a strike force that can get us promoted. If that bid offer does not come in then we can keep Wickham and do our best to develop him into the top player that he should become.

Can't see it happening myself but if Torres does move on Liverpool will be short of strikers.

You lot aint a clue i got all the inside knowledge as i actually played cricket against them on friday! Wickham is staying for the season but dont be surprised if deal has already been done. Keane is signing new goalkeeper as murphy confirmed on the pitch. Keane has no man management skills the players were bad mouthing him on the pitch they have no respect for the man. But there is a good team spirit amongst the younger ones and tommy smith and shane o connor are both really good professionals who have good laugh but also know how to be professional both will go on to better things. Stead and bruce were very ignorent so to was leadbitter.

Utter rubbish! No Premiership manager would pay this kind of money for someone as unproven as Whickham. Yes he shows bags of promise and like many others I hope to see that in an ITFC shirt this coming year... if he does prove it, there is little chance that we will be able to keep him after this season, but I really cannot see anyone paying £10m for a kid who has only played a handful of championship games.
Anyone who qoutes the likes of Rooney who went for much more at the age of 17/18 must remember he had been playing in the premiership with Everton for at least a year... paper talk, no more. If Torres does go, Liverpool would want a proven replacement, not a very expensive punt at a youngster... next year... different story.

Ipswich24, just goes to show the professionalism of our players if they were bad mouthing Keane off in front of outsiders, no wonder they play like crap.
