Palace and Town Close on Garvan Fee
Palace and Town Close on Garvan Fee
Monday, 26th Jul 2010 19:43

Town and Crystal Palace are reportedly close to agreeing a fee for midfielder Owen Garvan. Last week the Eagles, who are managed by former Blues boss George Burley, made an offer variously claimed to be £150,000, £200,000 and £300,000.

Burley is a big fan of Garvan, recently saying that the former Irish U21 international skipper is someone who would fit into his Palace side: “He’s a good passer of a ball and someone who I feel who can do well for me. He’s my type of player.”

Garvan is understood to have been on the list of eight players made available for transfer by Town, but the academy product is believed to be happy at Portman Road and may not fancy the move to Selhurst Park.

Meanwhile, former Blue Darren Ambrose has signed a new three-year contract with the Eagles ending speculation regarding his future.

Elsewhere, ex-striker Billy Clarke has been ruled out of Blackpool's entire inaugural Premier League campaign having undergone surgery on a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.

Wouldn't worry too much.

Keane will probably want to keep him now!

Knowing us, we'll do a deal with Palace at £100 per week

This is a player who should not have been sold for less than £1m and certainly not to a team that most would consider to be inferior to ourselves. Poor management has reduced Garvan to a weak player with no confidence. On his day he is a match winner with great composure & an eye for a pass & goal.

I fully expect him to be sold on to a Premiership club for £2m+ within 18 months; after a spell under a manager who uses him properly and who will know when to put an arm around him when he needs encouragement rather than publically slaughtering him. All players/employees are different and respond differently to managerial styles.

I think Owen is a very decent player, but I think the Championship is becoming more of a scrap in order to get out of it. He would be great in the Premier League with more time on the ball, but he just isn't Keanes type of player, plus he is very lazy!

Also, how gutted was I to see the "Dos Santos to return to Town"
headline on the EADT website, only to find it was a story about him being in the Spurs XI for the friendly!!!!
I went from utter jubilation to complete rage in about 1 second!!!!!!!!

I shouldn't get to excited the ditherer that is Keane will probably call off the deal.

Never mind the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, in Keane's case the right hand doesn't even know what the right hand is doing.

bad business again from keano clowno....in centre midfield now we have leadbitter and norris (first teamers) quinn (who he wants to sell) and hourihane (unproven youngster) ....keane is selling our most naturally gifted midfielder who can replace either leadbitter or norris in the centre and never looked to bad on the left (although not ideal)

And for 300k? JOKE.

Talented player, but talent alone was never enough. The fact that no other club is prepared to come in and bid more than 300k is telling.

you cant say other clubs not bidding for him proves hes not a good player

Garvan never reached his potential and needs a new challenge I feel. Let's get what we can - whatever Burley will offer - I'm sure it will be reasonable. Best of luck to the boy.

slowerball good point Garvan deserves a good manager and he certainly won't get that here........ Garvan will thrive under GB as Keane persists in the destruction of the club I love. Bloody clueless selling Garvan, players want to play for George Burley, our lack of signings show what players think of Keane!!! Some of you are so blind to keanes failings, hopefully he will be gone soon, just hope its not too late!!

An absolute disgrace ! Garvan is one of the young midfielders who can create something out of nothing - he can thread a pass and has skill . Kenae is a liability - he lacks style and vision and he is single handedly destroying and dismantling a once good club ! The longer he stays, the longer it will take to rebuild a cohesive, passing and unified team again. KEANE GO NOW !

"Garvan a premiership player within 18/12", "Garvan a very good footballer" - For goodness sake , you people! How many years has this player not taken his various chances to show what he can do (under more than one manager)?

If OG was THAT good he'd have been picked up by a Prem Club years ago. NO ONE has even come in to look at him. So shouldnt that simple fact tell you that this player, although he is a good passer of the ball has so little else to his game.

He cant run
He cant header
He cant tackle
He cant defend
He doesnt score many goals

ALL of these attributes are required by (especially) a Premiership quality player.

Garvan wont be a premiership player, he is weak mentally and this is why he has failed so far!!

Any player who suffers homesickness at the age of 20 would worry me!!

He does need a kick up the backside occassionally, but has more to offer than our current first choice midfielders. He's has a bit of art, he's not all huff and puff like the rest. We could have got £1m for him a year or two ago. bad business letting him go for £300k or less

SiBo added 09:15 - Jul 27
problem is muhrensleftfoot... He has NO huff and puff... doesn't appear committed and hasn't for some time, so that's not down to RK... I remember when RK first took over people were saying... "Ah he'll get OG back to where he was...." It hasn't happened. People blamed Magilton for OG's failings, now they blame RK... maybe, just maybe it's down to OG himself. He had a season and a half of looking a really good prospect.... had the homesickness bug and in my view never recovered... he can pass a ball if given time and space with it, but you don't get that in the Championship these days... if we got £300k for him, we would be getting ther better of the deal...
Currently available (senior) midfielders if he goes: Walters, Edwards, Norris, Ledbitter, Healy, Quinn, Civelli, Martin. Add in the few youngsters we have seen bits and bobs of lately in Clark and Hyam, plus the new 19 year old we have just signed and we have more than enough cover in this area of the pitch. let him go...

Hi Ipswich fans - not here to gloat but to give a reasoned Palace perspective on the Garvan transfer. First of all from a team that played 'Hoofball' over the past couple of years under Neil Warnock it's so refreshing to see us pass the ball on the ground now under GB. I think Garvan will add to our midfield and help consolidate our position in the Championship. I don't know what GB has done but to get Ambrose to sign a contract extension is great news. I wish you all the best for the season and am sure a few of you will be down at Selhurst next month. Cheers.
