Fülöp Set for Town Medical
Fülöp Set for Town Medical
Monday, 2nd Aug 2010 10:39

Sunderland keeper Márton Fülöp will reportedly undergo a medical at Town tomorrow with a deal regarding his move finally having been reached.

A fee of £750,000 is believed to have been agreed last week with the player having been involved in talks regarding personal terms and over the settlement of the remaining year of his Black Cats deal.

Over the weekend, Roy Keane indicated that an agreement was close and Sunderland boss Steve Bruce said he thought that the move would go through.

Elsewhere, former Blue Veliche Shumulikoski has not been offered a deal at Crystal Palace after his trial. The Macedonian was released by Preston at the end of last season.

Great stuff, well done to all concerned at the club for agreeing terms and getting this deal done. Top class keeper and looks set to be the best permanent keeper we've had since Kelvin Davis.

I really can't understand this signing we already have 3 goalkeepers on the books why do we need a 4th?? when we are lacking creativity in midfield and a proven goalscorer(s)

Great news fingers crossed it goes through then we will have a big top class keeper at last, will go a long way to being a good season, well done to all concerned.

Because none of the three on the books are experienced senior players with the kind of pedigree that Fulop has. Why do so many people struggle to understand that because a keeper might not be our top priority, doesn't mean that this deal shouldn't go through if we can make it happen? Keane had several targets this summer, moves for a left back and a keeper have so far worked out, the others haven't. Doesn't mean they have prioritised those positions higher or put more effort into getting those particular deals done.

Fulop is a class above the other keepers at this club and will make a big big difference.

Great signing, all the top managers build from the back. I wonder if Murphy may a secret striker or right back!!

Surprised we signed Kennedy as we could have put ALB at left back Murphy at right back and Fulop in goal, and when things got touch we could put all 3 in Goal

Easy this football manager thing

Maybe they arent but having 4 goalkeepers isn't going to win us games, playing football and creating chances does that, same as Mark Kennedy I personaly think Shane O'Conner did more in the 15 mins he was on the pitch than Mark he has energy and a will to get forward and take players on something we seriously lack at this club

Will be interesting to see if Fulop is picked above Murphy straight away. I assume not, because Murphy has done nothing wrong. Then if Murphy continues to perform well, how long will Fulop be happy being number 2?

It´s going to be competition for place between sticks. Still, GK not the first position needing strenghtening. But anyway, welcome and hope to see some good displays!

I also agree with you Souperjim... A top signing that improves on what we have... that's all you can ask of a signing... are they better than what we have and in this instance he is...
Like you I think this is only part of what RK wants to bring in this year... the others are just taking a little longer... which in itself isn't bad as it shows they are players that the current owners want to keep, which bodes well for their quality.

Everyone on here is forgetting that we just let Richard Wright go. He had three bad games last year (along with the entire defence) but before that had reaped several MOTM performances and the previous year was our player of the season.

So, while Fulop might be a good keeper, and better than Murphy, not only do we not really need him at the moment, we certainly didn't need him if we'd kept Wright.

The summer business has been odd, in the extreme. O'Conner sidelined by a 34 year old who probably isn't much better than the more versatile D Wright who we let go for free, and a keeper we didn't really need and who probably isn't better than R Wright, who we let go for free.

Do people really think our squad is better than it was before the Wrights were let go?

Anyway, I do agree that Fulop will be better than Murphy, and that can't be a bad thing.

naa, agree that R Wright leaving was a bit of a strange one. I'm not sure we've had the whole story. Presumably Keane was already planning to get in a replacement when he let him go.

Anyway, Fülöp is 5 and a half years younger that Wright, 4 inches taller and, like Wright, has Premier League experience. Hopefully he won't take too long to gel with the defence when he arrives.

I always find it funny that they leave the medical until this point. They've been negotiating for weeks and only get round to the medical now? (Or tomorrow even!) So it turns up some problem, they have wasted weeks of their time.

Lets hope he passes. And its not all this for nothing.
If it all goes well and he passes and signs can he play against Tottenham?

He should be able to play if he signs tomorrow... but that doesn't mean he will of course.

well I watched him play for Man City on loan and he looked shaky and wasnt impressed at all with him Murphy has done nothing wrong and deserves the number 1 shirt, strangest signing that Roy has made since he's been at the club

Richard wright went to pieces when put under pressure, we saw this at arsenal and everton as well as last season, we are now hopefully bringing in a premiership quality keeper, a big lad who should dominate his box and take the pressure off the defence just as Begovic did last season

DrJekyll, you're being very selective with your memory there. Wright was just fine for us in the Prem and excellent his first season back here, so to write him off for three dodgy games last year is pushing it.

Truth is few of us really know very much about Fulop we're all just hoping he's good. But when I consider Keane's hits-to-misses ratio in the transfer market I'll wait a while before getting too excited.

But regardless, he's still someone we don't really need. I hope RK has a right-back creative midfielder (in lieu of Garvan) and striker lined up or this will be even more pointless.

Good news. Agree with some of the other posts - just because a keeper is not a top priority it doesn't mean we shouldn't be looking to strengthen in every area of the field.

naa added 17:32 - Aug 2
jas0999: true, but with a limited budget you should look to strengthen the most important areas first.

Also, didn't RK sign our other two keepers? I know that Barrat was signed as back-up but I was under the impression that Murphy was meant to be first choice....
