Town Confirm Ablett Illness
Town Confirm Ablett Illness
Monday, 2nd Aug 2010 17:06

Town have confirmed that new coach Gary Ablett is in hospital receiving treatment for an illness, believed to be Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Ablett, who recently agreed a one-year deal with the Blues, was taken ill at the club's Playford Road training ground last week.

A Town statement reads: “Everyone at the club is devastated by the sudden onset of such a serious illness.

“Our thoughts are with Gary and his family and we would ask for the family to be given the privacy they require at this difficult time.”

Ablett, 44, played for both Merseyside clubs, who have released statements, Liverpool saying: "Everyone at the club would like to extend their best wishes to Gary and hopes that he makes a speedy recovery."

A spokesman for Everton added: "Gary has always been a popular figure at Goodison. Our thoughts are with Gary and his family at this time.”

TWTD adds its good wishes and will pass on any messages posted below or on last night's story to the club.

This form of cancer does not come on quickly : if he has had it for a while (especially if he didn't know) he is up against it, I'm afraid. It killed Dale Roberts of course (and my own mother, which is how I know the disease profile).

Best of luck, Gary.

Daleyitfc - thanks for your cheerful comment!
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is not a single discrete type of cancer. It is a 'catch-all' term used to describe lymphomas that are not Hodgkin's lymphoma. They vary greatly in aggressiveness and location. Prognosis is dependent on the exact form that Gary has and at what stage it has been caught. Let's stay positive and wish him all the best in his battle and for his full recovery.

DaleyITFC- Non Hodgkins Lymphoma consists of 16 different conditions that have little in common with each other. They are grouped by their aggressiveness. Less aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas are compatible with a long survival while more aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas can be rapidly fatal without treatment. Without further narrowing, the label is of limited usefulness for patients or doctors.
Let's hope it is the less aggressive form that he is suffering from.
All the best for a speedy recovery Gary.

Best wishes to Gary. It is terrible news but as others have posted there are different types of the disease and let us hope that the one Gary have is not one of the most aggressive. It does indeed put football into context.

We actually should be hoping it's an aggressive lymphoma; strange though it may be, rapidly growing cancers tend to be more sensitive to chemotherapy and therefore more amenable to cure than slower growing ones.

Regardless, all the best Gary, all the Town fans will be behind you.

Best of luck Gary. All at our club wish you a full and speedy recovery. If you require a recommendation then David Chow at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead is one of the best in this field. Let's pray this has been caught early.
