Garvan Completes Palace Move
Garvan Completes Palace Move
Tuesday, 3rd Aug 2010 16:37

Midfielder Owen Garvan has completed his £225,000 move to George Burley's Crystal Palace. The Irish U21 international skipper is believed to have signed a two-year deal, having undergone a medical yesterday.

Garvan said: "I am delighted to have signed for Crystal Palace. Hopefully this season I can play a bit more football, that is what I am wanting to do and hopefully everything will go well for myself and the club.

"At Ipswich things did not really work out and I think the manager realised that. As a footballer I just want to play games and play in the Championship and I am just thankful to the manager for giving me this chance and hopefully I can repay him with good performances and good results.

"He just tried to sell the club to me and the main thing is he said that I would get more game time here than I would at Ipswich. I could not wait around at Ipswich any longer as last season I was on the bench and getting frustrated and hopefully a new challenge will be good for me.

"There are a few ex-Ipswich players here and I know Sean [Scannell], although it is unfortunate for him to have picked up the knee injury and may be out for a little while. When you come to a new club there are different staff and new lads to meet and this is part and parcel of a move."

Town boss Roy Keane paid tribute to Garvan and to defender Alex Bruce, who left Portman Road for Leeds United last week: "Both Owen and Alex have served Ipswich Town well and we wish them all the best in their future careers."

I no Crystal Palace are in trouble, but Garvan isent going to have enough money to by the club. If thats why Burleys bought him in their going to be massively disapointed!

this guy is possibly the most overrated player to have been at the club in a long while. Unenthusiastic, lazy, weak, slow and his ability to to pass a ball has been hugely overemphasised. Goodbye!!!!

Good luck Owen was always a fan but I think you needed a new challange to keep you on your toes. Good luck for the future and I am looking forward to seeing Palace play this season.

Keano has done the right thing. Garvan's move is good for all parties involved. It is obvious we are improving as well, looking forward to Sat!

He needed a fresh start as Keane rightly said. The perfect move for him working with Burley again. Plus Lee, Ambrose and wright are there. Perfect transfer for Owen. All the best, you looked a decent prospect then faded.

Now...WHERE THE FUNK IS CHOP CHOP!!?

I think this will be this season's Rhodes deal for Keane ,another bad decision for me ,our squad has a distinct lack of a killer pass, somebody to beat a player or outright pace . Compared to our squad i would have Garvan,Ambrose,Lee and Wright back and George too!! Hopefully Mr Keane will prove me wrong but we have a difficult start to the season and time is against him ,a team that works hard does not produce goals just stops the opposition lets hope Boro take time to gel like we did last season !

A joke, especially at that ridiculous price. The most creative midfielder at the club, the only player able to create space and make the game look easy. Perhaps those who think he's rubbish should give George Burley a ring. I sincerely believe he will make RK look like the clown he really is.

So there!

That's it then. The last of the 2005 Youth Cup winning team has left the club. All that promise–to think that we thought it would be like 1973 and 1975 all over again, the start of a new era of the real Ipswich Town with success built on our own youth players. Instead it now looks like a false dawn, and in retrospect just a lucky cup run. Only Owen, Danny Haynes and Shane Supple made even slightly significant contributions to the first team; only Owen, Danny and Liam Trotter brought in even the least of transfer fees. I don't know what lessons we draw from this, other than that youth players often don't live up to their promise. I suppose some will blame management, but the club supposedly restructured the organisation when Klug and Magilton took over to make the transition from youth to first team easier, and instead we got a team of journeymen cloggers. Just a sad day all round. Fingers crossed for the latest generation. And good luck, Owen.

Absolute Bargain - very talented player, all he needed was to play under the right manager - watch him play now. And I wonder why that will be!

interesting those FA Youth Cup Finals lineups: Of that Southampton squad, 3 play for premier league teams (Best, Walcott, Bale), none of the Ipswich boys do. Of the rest two play for top six champo sides (Dyer, McGoldrick), with one other in the league (Crainie), one other in League 1 (Lloyd James) and one more is their current best player (Lallana).

Of ours: 3 are in the champo (Haynes, Garvan, Trotter), one in the SPL (Liam Craig) and 1 in league 1. The others aren't even playing in the football league.

What the hell caused that? Our kids just weren't that good?

OG has always had a lot of potential but has struggled to live up to hopes and expectations, particularly in recent years. I do hope this doesn't come back to haunt us.

Good luck Owen! A fresh start may bring the best out of you (hopefully not against us though!)

It is rather sad to see Garvan leave for such a cheap price, and disappointing that he didn't realise his potential in the last two or three years. It's a good move for him I think, as under George Burley's management and passing style he may be able to re-establish himself.

Isn't that about 11 players gone now? New striker pleeeeeease!
