Keane Waiting on Edwards Ahead of Palace Trip
Keane Waiting on Edwards Ahead of Palace Trip
Friday, 20th Aug 2010 14:08

Town boss Roy Keane is waiting on the fitness of midfielder Carlos Edwards ahead of Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace. The Trinidadian is close to a return from his groin injury, but Grant Leadbitter is set to miss out due to the ankle problem he sustained in last week’s 1-1 home draw with Burnley.

Keane says he is hopeful that Edwards could be back in his increasingly threadbare squad: “Grant probably won’t make it for this weekend, but he may be available for Tuesday. Carlos we hope will be available.”

Even if the former Wrexham, Luton and Sunderland man does return, Town still have a lengthy injury list with Connor Wickham (ankle) at least still three or four weeks away from being back, as is Damien Delaney (thigh).

Mark Kennedy is likely to be out for another fortnight with the hamstring problem he sustained at Middlesbrough, Alan Quinn has been out with a groin problem which requires rest and Luciano Civelli is not yet close to a first team return after the setback he suffered in the summer as he continues his recovery from his long-term knee injury.

Central defender Troy Brown could be back on the bench after missing out last weekend having hurt his ankle at Exeter in the Carling Cup.

Despite his continuing frustrations regarding further additions to his squad, Keane has signed Celtic’s Darren O’Dea on loan this week and the Blues boss says the Irish international will go straight into the squad.

The Blues boss is pleased to have brought in his one-time Bhoys team-mate: “Young Darren’s a good young player, he’s played at a very high level with Celtic. He’s played in the Championship before [with Reading] and he wants to come to the club and do well.

“He’s a good lad , he’s trained with us this week and he’s settling in very well. He’ll do well for us, he’s a good character.”

The lengthy list of absentees means that Keane is unlikely to make too many changes to the side which drew with Burnley. Márton Fülöp will continue in goal with Jaime Peters at right-back and Gareth McAuley and Tommy Smith at the centre of the defence.

Shane O’Connor might face opposition from new signing O’Dea at left-back, but Keane may decide to introduce the 23-year-old from the bench or at Crewe in the Carling Cup in midweek.

Town are likely to continue with the three-man midfield with Luke Hyam sitting behind skipper David Norris and probably Colin Healy, although summer signing Conor Hourihane may also be in with a shout of a first team debut.

Up front, with the deal to sign Wigan’s Jason Scotland still to go through, Keane will probably start with Carlos Edwards on the right if he’s fit with Jon Stead — who has continued talks regarding his possible move away from Town this week — in the middle. Either Tamás Priskin and Spurs loanee Andros Townsend will start on the left with the other on the right if Edwards fails to make it.

Keane says the numerous former Town men at Palace gives the game additional spice: “It should be a good game, obviously we’ve one or two ex-players there and the manager. It’s set up for a good game and we’re looking forward to it.

“We had a tough game down there last season when Steady was sent off, which changed the course of the game.

“They’ve got a new manager and lots of new players and everyone knows that to get a result at Palace you’ve got to play well. It should be a cracking atmosphere. They had a good victory at home in their first game, but our spirits are good and we’re looking forward to it.”

Palace, who officially exited administration earlier today, have no new injury worries ahead of the match but Sean Scannell and Lee Hills are on the sidelines with long-term knee injuries. George Burley's men sit in 10th in the table having won one and lost one so far this season.

The Eagles have added former Holland international Edgar Davids to their squad on a pay-as-you-play basis, the 37-year-old having trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday morning. Tottenham youngster Jonathan Obika has signed on loan.

Selhurst Park has recently become a home for Town old boys with Burley the manager, Malcolm Webster the keeper-coach and Alan Lee, David Wright, Darren Ambrose, Lewis Price and Owen Garvan amongst the playing staff.

Released Town keeper Richard Wright has been training with the Eagles, while Pablo Couñago completed a loan move on Friday (but won’t be able to play in Saturday’s match) and Burley added former Town academy schoolboy Stuart O’Keefe to his squad earlier in the week from Southend.

Palace’s summer signing from St Mirren, midfielder Andy Dorman, even spent time training with the Blues back in 2005 when a New England Revolution player. In contrast, only Mark Kennedy from Roy Keane’s current squad or staff has played for Crystal Palace.

Town have the edge over the years, winning 29 games between the sides (27 in the league), drawing 23 (23) and losing 24 (24).

Last season at Selhurst Park, Jaime Peters put the Blues in front and Town were well on top until Jose Fonte’s equaliser was followed by referee Paul Taylor showing Jon Stead a hugely controversial red card just before the break. In the second half the numerical difference told and Palace netted through Neil Danns and Victor Moses to complete a 3-1 scoreline.

Earlier, in the Portman Road fixture, the result was the same. Former Blue Darren Ambrose scored twice within a minute in the second half, Alex Bruce pulled one back for the Blues prior to Neil Danns settling any Eagles nerves.

Saturday’s referee is Jonathan Moss from West Yorkshire, who last season showed 121 yellow and eight red cards in 37 games. Moss’s most recent Town match was the 3-1 win at Derby in April in which he booked Town’s Jack Colback, Daryl Murphy and Gareth McAuley and the Rams’ Nicky Hunt, as well as showing Derby’s Stephen Pearson a straight red card for foul and abusive language, an incident which led to his manager Nigel Clough being sent to the stands.

Probable squad: Fülöp, Murphy, Peters, Ainsley, O’Connor, O’Dea, McAuley, Smith, Brown, Hyam, Norris, Healy, Hourihane, Edwards, Stead, Townsend, Priskin, Lambe, Murray.

I'd play Priskin in the middle up front (He looked good there against Middlesbrough) not Stead, who likes to drift wide and leaves a big whole in the middle so no one is there on the end of crosses… But then again, I'm not the manager…

got to supply Stead, Priskin, Murray, Adebola and Townsend with lots of low driven crosses if we're going to win

I agree with the above - Priskin in the middle up front. Stead can play wide right if Edwards isn't fit enough, and Townsend wide left.

When is Clegg going to do some PR bit and speak to us fans?
Maybe he would care to share why he has failed to sign anyone!
At least Sheepy used to speak to us fans once in a while.
It's all secret stuff down at PR these days and quite frankly i dont blame Keane for having a dig.
Does this club have any ambitions or what??
It took us two weeks to sign a Keeper so what chance have we got of getting 3 or players (One of them a 20+ striker) by the end of next week??
Grow some balls Clegg and Evans and speak to us Paying fans!!

Pissed of with this crap every day,
Every day we all come on here expecting a signing or at least some decent news and all we get is silence and news on the next town player leaving!!
We have one week and if things aint done Keane will walk and quite frankly i dont blame him.

Legend you are spot on as we never get anything from the top at Portman Road except from Roy Keane. Sheepshanks was lambasted on here by many fans but at least he spoke to us with many radio interviews and made himself available to the public at various meetings and was in the spotlight with the local press. Some of the problem is I believe that Clegg is just not a football man but purely an administrator. In defence of Clegg and our local media (TWTD excepted) I wouldn't speak to Elvin King and co as quite frankly they seem very anti ITFC which is a shame. I can detect Keane getting very frustrated which is a pity because at last he is getting the team he wants. The question is will he be allowed to complete the jig saw with some much needed signings. Anyway heres hoping for at least a point tomorrow - how about

Question is would you prefer George and those players or keane and our lot? I maybe being sentimental but I'd rather have the old Ipswich.

Starting to worry a bit now!! Lets hope there is movement behind the scenes on the transfer front. Even if we do bag Scotland next week i still think we need another quality sriker, decent right-back and a creative midfeilder. If Keane doesn't get what he wants from SC and ME, i think he'll walk. If quality isn't brought in, you do have to question the clubs real ambition! A point tomorrow 2-2 COME YOU BLUES!!!!!

MCGOODERZ - Adebola? Do we really have Adebola? Not an exctiting signing if so. (Tyipical Town making us think we are going to sign some good player and we always have to settle for second or less best.) MCGOODERZ Where did you get that from?

we havent got Adebola, or anyone in fact other than a fairly decent centre back that really was bottom of our 'needs'. I have to agree with most on here - what does Clegg get paid for? He is totally rubbish at PR, he has made no friends amongst the fans (pretty poor move when we are the bread and butter of the club wouldnt you say!) Just think about it - if he brought in a couple of decent names such as Chopra/Scotland etc he is likely to up the gate by a few thousand. 19,000 last week is pretty bloody poor. Ok average ticket is around £30, so if we sold 3,000 extra seats due to the great football and big names that would be 90K each home game extra ummmmm wouldnt that help pay for the wages of these guys???!! instead we get no one, fans are disgruntled, those without seasons tickets dont feel the desperate urge to attend and gates go down - loosing the club money.... Its not difficult all this marketing stuff.... Clegg is becomes as faceless as the owner he is suposed to represent - come on be a man, show yourself and for once be honest about what on earth is going on cause bit by bit and a fast increasing rate you are loosing the faith of those that line your purse........

Boring I know, but Garvan would be playing ahead of Healey if he were stil at PR.

It doesn't look like we are going to sign anyone...
Agree with you CobboldNeal- Garvan would be picked ahead of MOST of the other midfielders we have...

Team today...

Fulop

Peters Mcauley Smith O Connor

Hyam

Norris Healy (there's No-one else)

Stead Priskin Townsend

Edwards and Murray off the bench. Christ that's a really thin squad. Be disappointed if Tommy or O Connor lost their place today. Keane has always said if you're doing the business then you're in and both of them were excellent against Burnley.

I'll take a point today. See you all down there for Ipswich A vs Ipswich B.

good luck today lads! another 3 points will do nicely! shame we havent replaced counago and walters this week, but lets be honest what decent players wud actually consider playing under keane right now, poor man management, counago and lisbie forced to train with the reserves and walters was completely dropped, garvan dropped! it dont look good on the outside for any player targeted by town! so im not surprise we r struggling for a decent squad!
