Town Confirm Pablo's Palace Loan
Town Confirm Pablo's Palace Loan
Friday, 20th Aug 2010 17:03

Town have confirmed Pablo Couñago’s season-long loan move to Crystal Palace. The Spaniard, whose contract at Portman Road is up at the end of the season, will not be able to play for his new club against the Blues at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Couñago’s move brings to a close the striker’s nine-year connection with the Blues. Palace boss George Burley brought the 31-year-old to Portman Road from Celta Vigo in the summer of 2001 after being impressed with him in action for Spain’s U21s in a friendly against England in which he scored twice.

Having had a less than harmonious relationship with Joe Royle, Couñago returned to Spain and Malaga in the summer of 2005, before Jim Magilton brought him back to Town in the summer of 2007.

In total, Couñago made 147 starts and 95 sub appearances for Town, scoring 62 goals.

Good news, to be honest he's never shown the kind of form he did under Burley, & it was a expensive mistake resigning him. However, I'm sure we all have those memories of him when he could turn on the skill, & for those moments we will be grateful, but ultimately he will not now be missed.

Ipswich really need some strikers now, Silly to leave yourself with only two, especially after their good start. Ipswich had better pull out the stops to get player in soon.

I've been saving this little rant until he really was no longer our player, but Pablo has long been one of my least favourite Town players. I always wanted to ask those vocal Pablo supporters what they saw in him. In particular, you can normally identify a good striker by saying what type of striker he is, or what his main strength is. Pablo isn't a great finisher, he's poor in the air, he can't shoot from outside the box, he isn't an unselfish worker who makes things for his teammates, he isn't very fast or strong or big, his hold-up play is OK, but not fantastic, and–depsite what his backers seem to thing–he isn't very creative, as far as making chances for others goes. Add to that a questionable temperament which causes him to be inconsistent and to sulk, not to mention dive and pick up the occasional red card, and you have a thoroughly poor player. When he left for the first time, I was glad. When he returned, I was appalled. When he was given a new contract without there being need to give him one (a Jim specialty, by the way), I shook my head. And when–last summer–in the course of twenty-four hours, Pablo refused Swansea and Rhodes was sold to Huddersfield, I was genuinely horrified. I have nothing against him personally, so I wish him well, but I am very glad to see him leave the club. Rant over.

Arc- agree with pretty much everything you say but to make your case stronger, be fair- he can hold the ball up well, not just OK, and on his day he could unlock the defence with a turn and a pass.
However, his days were few and far between, his scoring record is poor, his attitude was bad and he was on an expensive contract. So adios Pablo, get Scotland deal tied up and get another striker in and we shall have a potent strikeforce. Of course we've been saying that for years but we can live in hope.

arc - almost agree, with his back to goal he can turn the defender and create himself a shot at goal but i aint seen him do that for a long while now, if george can get him back to his best he will do very well for them.
btw i am glad he has gone too

Said it before, will say it again. Would rather have Pablo at this club than Keane.

Last year -
Pablo - 27 appearances last year, 2 goals, 1 assist.
Lee Martin - 10 appearances, 1 goal, 2 assists.

Cant believe there's even a debate on here about Pablo. You cant dine out on former glories forever, and it isnt enough that your name makes for a good song.

Best of luck Pablo.

Now I await the posts suggesting this will free up wages for Chopra's arrival. :-)

So that's Murphy, D.Healy, Lisbie, Counago, Walters and Martin gone, Stead listed and Wickham injured. Has Ipswich's need for strikers ever been so urgent? Come on Evans, Clegg and Keane...sort it out!!

Tractorboybig- Once again a negative comment. "One of the best players we've had at this club in years". I'd love to find out who you think he's better than in his position in the last 10 years. Would you put him ahead of Marcus Stewart or Darren Bent? In his first stint he was a decent player, but his second spell was not what I would class as good. Perhaps seeing as you like all of the players that Palace have signed from us you should go and see them play. I for one would rather watch my club, that I have grown up supporting come rain or shine. Pablo has unfortunately not been a success second time around, as much as we all liked him first time around.

Getting Very Worried now.

How can Palace a club in adminsation (just out today) sign players without too much fuss. Besides Pablo they have just signed Edgar Davids, Now surely his contract must be a complecated one, Yet a club like Ipswich with money to spend can seem to sign a player.
The Scotland deal is beyond a joke now and if the owner is true to his word that he want prem football, surely he would have pulled out all the stops to get Keane his number one target.
If Keane had 12 players who he thought could do us a job, how come we have not got them. Keane looked on Sky Sports well fed up and he left Sunderland over something very similar to this.
Keane has done his part and yet again false promices from the owners

He did score a brilliant goal against Portsmouth at the end of 2002-03 ....................................................... If only he could have applied himself every week, at his best he was very very good. Unfortunately he went missing, sulked or fell over too much of the time. He's 31 now and surely earning far less than he used to, thereby reducing his commitment even more. I don't think he'll do much now.

As Arc implies, if Pablo had gone to Swansea would we still have Rhodes. Silly speculation i know but still a thought.

Maybe, but it depends on how realistic the targets are that Keane has put to them. If he suggests players on Premier League contracts (e.g. Scotland) or top Championship contracts (e.g. Chopra) then maybe they want silly money and are just are not affordable. They have already funded Fulop (Premier League), Hourihane (Premier League), Townsend (Premier League), O'Dea (Scottish Premier League) and Kennedy (Championship). Why are we not unearthing gems from the lower leagues or overseas too?

Thank you Pablo. All the best. Probably my 2nd favourite Town player of my lifetime, not far behind Hermann Hreidarsson.

Sad as this sounds, I have a conspiracy theory about what is going on down at PR! And I fully expect to be slated for this and hopefully even proven wrong BUT... I simply cannot help but think that Evans and Clegg are deliberately trying to get Keane to fail so they can get rid of him! Call me a paranoid loony - fine! But for what other reason woudl they be so insistent on clearing the decks and then to not be able to secure players to come in and assist keano with the goal of achieving promotion with such a great booty availabel at the end of a succesful campaign?!?!? Purse strings and books need to balance etc. Yes, but Evans came into this club knowing the debt and he would have had to promise keano a massive purse to get players in etc. I just cannot believe that we cannot tie up our own boots let alone any new player deals when others around us are landing players left right abd bloody centre!
I have just read this back and I do sound stark raving mad - But a theory/problem shared!! ha ha!

Tomorrows prediction town win 0-2! COYB's!

Talented, but not a team player & high maintenance. Treated us to the odd memorable moment but its now great to see the back of him.

To me Pablo represents the medicority of the club over the past few seasons and it is now time to move forward.

Agree with what you are saying, However Clegg said that they would sit down after the season was over and work out what needed to be done for next year.
Keane said he wanted 2 strikers and a month later Keane named 8 to go.

Why are we letting all our strikers leave the club when Keane has stated that Wickham cannot be expected to play the whole season and the same must be said for Murray as well. Priskin is a gamble based on last year and Stead will be allowed to leave as we have agreed two fees for him so far.
Surely Clegg and Evans will have asked about Scotland and have a good idea of his wage structure before the put in a bid for the player. It must become clear after a week or so of the indaviduals demands are beyond the club.
If Joe Public has a good idea of Bellamys wage (70k a week) Cardiff must have known what they could afford (ie 10%, 20% 50% of his wage) before they went in for him. same must be said then for Clegg and ME.
Why did we not go for say Hooper or Pitman or Beckford or Austin or anyone lower down in the league.
I know what you are saying and agree but it all seems very strange we are unable to sign strikers when Mr Evans has all this money made from sale of players and saved wages.
On a rough calculation (rough) taking in to account an average of 10k a week wage, with the players brought in and those gone the club would be 6 Million better off this year than last. With a pot of gold of 78 Million at the end surely we could get 1 if not 2 good strikers.

''BUT... I simply cannot help but think that Evans and Clegg are deliberately trying to get Keane to fail so they can get rid of him!''

More likely is ME wants to run ITFC more in line with his other business entities, which i might add are very successful, so hes installing more of a commercial (from the head) plan than an emotive (from the heart) plan. I think knowing Keane's most influential mangers being Clough and Fergie means he has probabaly talked a good game to ME/SC about the youth & training set up, and maybe thats now more a part of the plan. I dont think ME / SC will try to get Roy out, hes too valuble in business terms at the moment i think, if were top 8 at Xmas and the squad is building i firmly believe he will be offered a one year extension, and will take it.......

If i was to draw any similarities to the way the club is being run, its similar to that of B'Pool with their recently departed chairman. If you impose a one size fits all wages / financial policy, youre going to struggle on the transfer front. I do find it amusing everyone stressing about how Cardiff / Palace are signing loads of players, no fees to talk of, but big longer term wages ties around their necks, when in reality, they are just adding to their longer term financial worries. If they are both in this league for 3 more years and we get a double dip recession, its more than likley they will both get put into Admin.....
