Civelli Needs to Conquer Mental Side of Injury
Civelli Needs to Conquer Mental Side of Injury
Saturday, 21st Aug 2010 09:46

Boss Roy Keane says midfielder Luciano Civelli needs to get over the mental effects of his long-term injury. Civelli, who has been out of the first team since March 2009 having seriously damaged knee ligaments, suffered a setback when he limped off in the pre-season friendly at Leiston and has so far not returned to action.

Keane says the 23-year-old is now physically OK, but that when the former Banfield man returns depends on him conquering the mental side of his recovery: “God knows, ask Luca. It’s all up to the bloody player. It’s not a knee job, it’s a head job. It’s all in the head. It’s about him getting over the 18 months out.”

The Blues boss is concerned that the Argentinian is worrying too much about the injury: “He’s thinking too much.”

Civelli, who signed from Banfield in his home country in January 2009 for £1.1 million, is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2012.

Meanwhile, striker Pablo Couñago has thanked fans for their support during his time at the club: “It has been a great experience for me and I will always remember it. This club has been a big part of my life.”

Couñago, who yesterday joined Crystal Palace on a season-long loan, says that despite what manager Roy Keane claims, he has always given his all: “I’m not a trouble-maker, I just don’t agree with the way the manager treats the players or the staff.

“I do understand if a manager says to a player ‘I don’t want you to play’, but it’s another thing to question passion or commitment. I have always been passionate and committed to this club 100%.

“He said he could only see what was happening in training, but I was training with the reserves and the youths, so how could he see that?”

The Spaniard’s Town contract is up at the end of the season and appears certain to have played his last game for the club. Under the terms of the loan agreement the 31-year-old is unavailable for today’s match.

I_Like_Pies:

Why? Please justify your claim ... 4 points out of a possible 6 this season - reason to sack a manager?

RK is spot on ! This player may never return to the game at this level, because he cant get over the pyschological effects of the injury. Players have ACL/meniscal ruptures and take on average 9-12 months to make a full recovery - Civelli has taken over 18/12...this is not a good sign, and he appears to lack the mental strength to make that step back into competitive football again !

Absolutely Civelli needs to dive in head first.

As for Pablo "not a trouble maker" was getting to comfortable at the club thinking that he did not need to perform.

Luca has a Head job, interesting title for Civellis auto biography!! I hope Luca isn't going to be an if only player, I also hope Roy isn't losing patience. would love to see him in full flight.

Pablo, I and many others saw you at Leiston when you were not the least bit interested and really looked like you didn't want to be there. Yes, the surroundings weren't brilliant, but you are paid good money to play football. Based on what I saw that evening, I would never have picked you again either!

It is worrying about Civelli, as when he was involved in pre-season we were thinking he was nearly ready for a return. Come on Luca, let's see you appear in the Championship or Carling Cup soon!

As for Counago, I was waiting for his comments criticising Keane as they definitely didn't get on. I guess Pablo is not the easiest person, but I hope the manager doesn't have any more falling outs as that is four already that have been public (Thatcher, Lisbie, Counago, Walters).

Pretty naive from Keane here,
chronic injures have nothing to do with psychology, science simply isn't good enough to "force the body to heal an area" yet.

Nice comments from Pabs, no doubt he'll get slated...

Agree should not be made public, However Lisbie Counago and Walters felt they were bigger than the club very similair to the England team.
Two teams that have not performed because the players dont like the manager.

In Robson book he said that when a player got a car that was better than his the chairman told the player to sell the car or he would never play for the club again.

Counago was earning 25k a week when he first came to the club (reported) Counago and Walters should remember Ipswich have made them Millionaires and that is only possible by the likes of you and me paying to watch them, in less than a month they earn more than most earn in a year. so they should give thier all

I would think that if anyone knows what it takes to recover from a career-threatening knee injury, and return to the midfield battle at 100%, it would be Roy Keane. If he suspects it's a question of mentality, I trust him.

Yet the guy as with all footballers knows nothing about Medicine.

If scans show the tissue as damaged then it is DAMAGED and putting yourself in a "lets get on with it" state will damage it more.

Keane is seriously loosing patience with Luca! Surely he needs to start off by making sub appearances for the reserves, & slowly building his confidence back up, I hope Keane keeps faith with him, cause I liked what I saw from him before the injury, he could be a key man, Come on Luca "lets be havin' you!" (to coin a phase!)

Frase1987, i'm assuming by the article that the opposite is the case i.e the scan shows the area is FULLY HEALED but the player is continuing to complain that it does not feel right , leading Keane to supect the problem lies not with his knee, but with his noggin!

wow. Great work there Keane..definitely some comments to boost the players morale and ease him back into the game..'"it's all upto the bloody player"

Another example of Roy's excellent man-management skills coming into play. It may be true that Luca's injury has been taking a long time but why does this even need to be made public (like so many other things) Surely a word in the players ear to build up his confidence would have done the trick. Why is it that everything that goes on with our club seems to be public knowledge these days?

Has it dawned on some of you that Civelli - who is fit - has told Keane he doesn't feel ready to play? Roy - who is desperate for players - may feel frustrated by this? Why do some of you have to 100% blame Roy for everything?

It's the same with Pablo - he is not going to say 'well actually I am very lazy in training' is he? It's one thing Pablo being committed and passionate about Ipswich - it's quite another pulling his weight on the training field. He had plenty of time to impress and didn't simple as that. Not all Roy's fault I'm afraid.

Civelli's English career ended with that knee injury : I suspect that his fear of getting injured again is a big part of that. Luckily, he was rubbish anyway, so won't be missed. The people on here who think differently clearly did not really watch how clueless and inept he was in his few appearances. I think he may actually be Ulrich le Pen.

pablo says how could he see his commitment in trainning when he was training with the reserves - ummm wasnt that just recently because of his lack of commitment with first team training? Saw him against Spurs and when he came on the pitch we were down to 10 men..... Stead was totally differant and i do hope he stays unless his staying means we loose out on a top notch striker which at the moment looks unlikely....

Oh, and Counago? You're a fat-bottomed lazy basket and always have been. How dare you suggest that you have always been passionate and committed : you wouldn't know those 2 qualities if they came and bit you on your over-sized backside.

jas0999 - full marks for being 'Roys' No1 ally - you're obvious more stuanch than last season. I choose to read it as it is, and think his people management skills right now are totally non existant, football management skills I will not even comment on because he needs more support from above, and indeed more time, to be fair.
I do however understand his frustrations in relying on people like Clegg and Evans to negotiate deals with players - both are sadly non effective on incoming deals - but seem to be able to agree to anything in terms of exit of players, whoever they are.
I predict your man will soon walk from frustration, which believe it or not, I hope doesn't happen. I personally want him to show us what he can do with the players he has obviously ear marked this season - but I honestly cannot see him getting the players, and indeed the chance to prove himself this season.

Once again Keane shows he has no man management skill at all.

I think there may be some malingering going on here, i read in a previous post and agree that his English football career is most probably over and maybe Luca wants to go to a less physical league to be sure of a longer playing career (i hope not, hope he plays for us again) but one thing you can be sure of is a manager that wont take no sh*t and will give him a chance, if Luca fails to take his chance then Keane will deal with him (whether the anti keane brigade like it or not ) and keane will move on .
ps. then we will need another replacement LOL do i need to say more....

Goodbye Pablo I'll remember you for chipping the goalkeeper at the Cov match in January to make it 3-2. But also for your frustrating lack of finishing when it was needed, perhaps tempered by the fact I put money on you to be top scorer in the Premiership in 2000, why did I do that. Must have throught you were going to be special, 10 years ago, Que Passe?
