Town Apologise for Ipswich Player Problem
Town Apologise for Ipswich Player Problem
Monday, 23rd Aug 2010 21:00

Town have apologised to users of their Ipswich Player online service for the lack of match commentary during Saturday’s game at Crystal Palace. Subscribers to Ipswich Player get to hear Radio Suffolk’s coverage of Town’s fixtures.

A club spokesperson told TWTD: “The problems with Ipswich Player over the weekend were caused by technical issues with our web providers Perform Group, and were not caused by either us or BBC Suffolk. The problems were across their network and not confined to Ipswich.

“We are very disappointed that this has happened, especially when the rest of the content, video interviews and action highlights packages etc, are now of such a good quality.

"We would like to pass on our apologies to everyone affected and to reassure them that we are taking all possible steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.

“We've set up an email address so that subscribers can pass on comments to us direct. We would welcome any constructive ideas on what they'd like to see on Ipswich Player - what sort of features they'd like us to try to include or what doesn't work for them. Email us at ipswich.player@itfc.co.uk.”

Well done Town. I'm glad they've recognised that the problem needed a response. It was very frustrating on Saturday, and the web providers technical bullsh1t to cover their @rses made it even worse!

I've had all sorts of problems with Player and let the club know recently. Camilla was quite helpful in making sure it was all sorted. Apparently Firefox doesn't work so well, on Macs at least...Chrome has worked well fyi.

And there was me thinking this was a story about lack of action in the transfer market purchasing department.

tractorlowrie...i'll try not to bore you to death here. You can use internet explorer with the intel macs if you have Boot Camp which allows you to run either OS (mac or PC) on one machine. You used to be able to use IE on a mac using a workaround but I tried and it was not a good experience. Chrome works fine. thanks for tip though.

I haven't subscribed since I spent the first season of this "service" pulling my hair out with it, only to be told at the end of the year that it didn't work on Macs, but that I could have an extra month of frustration for no charge. I have considered signing up again, but does it really still not work for Macs?

Do you remember when Radio Suffolk was streamed for free on the Town site? Then we invited to pay for this nonsense.

Living in Australia, this service is by far the best avenue I have to video and audio. I have been a subscriber for many years and can tell you the current product is excellent. Yes, I was frustrated on the weekend, but technical issues can occur and they are rare.

Obviously living here in Ohio, the Player is vital. I really like their new format, and luckily was not at home to listen on Saturday. Good to see the club on top of this, and keeping the info lines open.

arc - it does work without any trouble (so far) with Chrome but nothing else that I've tried. I admit that it actually works well with Chrome, for me, but I wouldn't recommend subscribing, to you or anyone else, after my similar experience of shabby customer service with them. Boo!

Peaky69 - I quite agree. I've been using Ipswich Player for a number of years, firstly in Sweden and now in New Zealand. Whilst it was disappointing to get up in the middle of the night only to get the second half, commentated by the Palace idiots, it was a rare glitch in what is usually an excellent service.

it is down to them to apologise, they hired this company and they also take the money. the buck stops with them I am afraid. I am away a lot with work and often use the Ipswich player, which for a while never worked with Firefox version 3, only worked with IE V7. It genuinely has been troublesome since it's inception. I have honestly lost count of the number of times that I have tried to log on and not been able to stream the audio content for live commentary.

I don't know about you guys but have you ever had more than 2 in 3 videos load without some sort of problem?? This is not tricky technology today especially with the constant improvement of plug ins for browsers yet somehow ITFC via perform still find it a too tricky.

Perform also provide the content for the ATP Tennis online media and that is even worse, everyone involved would find it very difficult to justify charges for service versus quality and reliability. If you ever listen to the match online all you can hear are the commentators, any crowd reaction sounds like a bunch of bee's swimming under water. This is a shame because I think that the BBC coverage that I listen to when I am home is so much better and not being properly represented on the Ipswich Player. I understand that it all has to be compressed in order to get realistic data rates but please, is this the best you can do???

I pretty much agree with Peaky69 above. I switched over to Ipswich Player last season from listening directly over a telephone line with my mum's telephone placed near her radio, which should tell you something about my level of IT competence! So for people like me, who assume that when it doesn't work it's their own fault, it would have been good if IP had put up a message directly: "We are currently experiencing problems" or some such. Having said that, it's worked very well up to now, and I'm generally pretty happy with it. The only thing that beats listening to Alex Mathie or Kevin Beattie on a sunny Swedish balcony with a couple of beers and a winning team into the bargain is a live match at PR.

I find it morally objectionable to pay to listen to radio suffolk, when you can hear it for free online 24/7 when Ipswich aren't playing.
