Clegg: No Firm Wickham Bids
Clegg: No Firm Wickham Bids
Friday, 27th Aug 2010 14:06

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says the Blues are yet to receive a firm bid for striker Connor Wickham. The 17-year-old is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but is due back soon after the international break.

Clegg says that although other clubs - Tottenham and Arsenal are reported to be amongst the admirers - have enquired, no formal offer has been received: "There had been a number of discussions but we've not had any firm bids.

“There's a lot of interest in Connor, he's an awesome individual and the strength he's going to come back with in a couple of weeks' time will be fairly impressive.

"We're delighted Connor is here and we look forward to him playing for Ipswich Town for a long time."

Wickham signed a two-year deal with the Blues when he turned 17 in March.

Clegg has spoken at length with the BBC regarding the club's summer dealings here.

How is that encouraging a bid. Explain. I bet you can't.

Many of my previous posts have been very anti Simon Clegg. However I would like to thank him for finding his voice over the last couple of weeks and letting us fans know what is going on. Knowing that the management of the club (RK, SC and ME) seem to be talking to each other bodes well for the season ahead. We might not like some of the things SC has to say but the truth is far easier to deal with than rumours and speculation - long may it continue. As for Connor, I along with all Ipswich fans look forward to seeing him back in the first team, and hope that he enjoys a long and successful career with us.

Looking for a bid yea? Try again. That was poor.

Presumably he'd fail a medical so i doubt anyone would waste their time with a bid this month.

Why does Clegg feel he needs to let us know that we haven't recieved any firm bids, im with Ipswich24 on this one that it does seem that we are encouraging a bid-otherwise what is the point in this statement, just say we cant wait to get Wickham back and leave it at that.

I think for the first time that the club might be in trouble and we are financially screwed, no evidence-just a gut feeling that with very little transfer activity etc that Wickham may be sacrificed to balance the books.

I hope im wrong and that Clegg was just putting out one of his muppet like speeches that I have come to expect from him.

Everything he said was very reasonable, can't help wondering if money is not being kept back until January either for Roy if we are in contention for promotion or a new manager if present form does not continue.

Im not Cleggs biggest fan but some of you guys who are slagging him off for trying to sell Wickham need to get a grip! Click on the link Phil has put up and listen to the full 5 minute interview! You will find that Brenner asked Clegg many questions which everyone has been asking on this website and Clegg gave direct answers. He was asked at the very end whether any firm bids had been made for Wickham and he said no! Then trying to put a positive on he mentioned how good he was looking in a bid to give us fans some good news!

Get a grip and support the team, lets get at least 21,000 at PR on SAT COYBS!

Listen to the clip before posting. Cleggy stated this in response to a direct question, posed not once, but three times. I cannot see (sorry, hear) any hidden agenda in anything he says about Connor.

I did find it interesting that he admitted that too much was paid for some players last season and that the same mistakes were not going to be made again.

Before people start moaning about lack of investment. Do not forget we are still a club in financial difficulty. Just because a very wealthy benefactor bought the club, the debt does no go away. it just gets owed to a different person. If ME ever decides enough is enough we could be back in the mire unless he sells to an equally wealthy body.

It does sound that Claggy, love him or hate him, is trying to run the show on sound economic grounds whuich will be for the long term benefit of the club. It also means that if silly money is offered for Wickham, he will be sold.

Step right up. Step right up. In other words, reasonable offers will be considered.

Ipswich 24, of course your entitled to your opinion and naturally as a fellow fan I respect it but calling someone an Idiot is in my opinion slagging off someone. If you have listened to the clip I would appreciate you trying to explain to me however how you think Clegg is basically putting wickham up for sale and welcoming bids?

If you listen to the clip he is simply answering a question..... He didnt just come out and say it for no reason

Actually, Wickham had better stay as our "potent" strikeforce of Priskin and Scotland may be the worst pairing in the whole division. These two would struggle to score against a Scottish turd division team. YIKES.

Big_Foot_Blue added 15:24 - Aug 27
Bloody hell Zippy, have you taken a pessimistic tablet from IpswichElvis????? How can scotland be one of the worst strikers in the division? In the last season he was hear he got over 20goals!? And although Priskin hasnt exactly turned Portman Road on Fire, he has looked much improved when playing in the centre rather than outwide, and if Scotland starts on the bench because of fitness and Priskin gets a chance down the centre tomorrow I'm sure he may well show you what he is capable of.... I hope :S

You lot are priceless!

Club says nothing you whinge, club says something you whinge.

Just no pleasing some.

We have an investor who keeps his nose out of day to day stuff. A chief exec to do the business in a controlled way without meeting every unrealistics demand from players and a manager who is refreshingly honest and actulally expects his players to earn their money.

We should be happy.

Everyone is reading abit too much into this, Clegg is a Chief Executive he is always going to be Mr.Unpopular but as I posted earlier where would we be without ME and therefore Clegg and Keane...we would be doing a Leeds or Portsmouth, let the business side run itself and we should get behind the team and trust them to sort it out as I think most of us would not have a clue!!!
And if Spurs want to pay £10million quid for teenager and then loan him back to us for a couple of seasons lets take the money!

Every player (nomatter what club he plays for) is on the market and will be sold if the right bid comes in and he wants to move.

I know that 'arry said that Crouch is not for sale at any price, but if someone came in with a bid of £30M (you may laugh, but it could happen) and he wanted to move, he'd go.

Rather than everyone focusing on whether Clegg was hinting at selling or not is by the by ... !
I think we should be focusing on the bit where he mentions how much power and strength Wickhams going to come back with !! I can't wait to see the size of him after the summer! Lets not forget he's got another two years of growth and the boy was a giant of a man last season !! Let's hope he can perfect his hold up play and no defender in the league will be able to get anywhere close to him!!
CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE HIM WITH AN ITFC SHIRT ON AGAIN.. BIG SEASON FOR THE BOY!

Get real people. With the newspaper speculation we've had that Spurs, or Arsenal, or Liverpool were all going to make offers, many at the club want to know what is going on. He is just telling us none of them have made a bid and that Conner is an Ipswich player. Talk about your Drama Queens!
