Keane: Win But We Didn't Play Well
Keane: Win But We Didn't Play Well
Saturday, 28th Aug 2010 18:04

Boss Roy Keane felt Town beat Bristol City 2-0 at Portman Road despite not playing particularly well. Tamás Priskin scored his first goal at home and Jason Scotland netted on his Blues league debut as Town climbed to third in the Championship, behind leaders QPR and Cardiff on goal difference.

Keane says that despite the two-goal cushion, he wasn’t relaxed going into injury time: “It’s never comfortable at 1-0 or even 2-0. One goal changes the course of the game and we’ve been there before. You can’t relax in the Championship you see a lot of late goals and teams put you under pressure.

“We took our chances without playing particularly well. What pleased me most was that we weren’t that great again today but what we have to learn to do as a football club is to win games without being brilliant, and we’ve done that today, although we had some decent chances.”

The Town manager is pleased his players are taking their opportunities this season: “Whether we can continue that is the big question mark. When you look at when we played Bristol City at home last year, I’d say we had twice as many chances but we ended up drawing 0-0 with their keeper getting man of the match. This year Tamás made the most of his opportunity and then Jason scored a poacher’s goal."

The Blues boss was delighted with his new striker: "On another day he could have had a hat-trick. What I liked about his goal was that he was on the move.

"He was sniffing and we didn't have anyone like that last season. Hopefully he'll give us that and the best thing that can happen to a striker when he joins a new club is to score a goal."

Keane switched Priskin to a central role in the second half in front of Scotland and was pleased that the move came off: “It worked, but that’s a credit to the players, they adapted and what you find with good players and any good team is that they can change shape during the game, like we did at Crewe the other night.

“I’m very, very pleased with the players. They’re ready for a break some of them. It’s been a good start of the season, but with any injuries or suspensions coming up, we’ll be tested.”

Keane says there are no new injuriesafter today's game and that he still doesn’t expect any new signings before Tuesday’s deadline.

Bristol City manager Keith Millen thought his side were in a good position at the break: “At half-time I was quite pleased with what we did in the first half. They had a couple of chances but we had a few chances that the keeper had to save as well.

“I felt at half-time we’d given ourselves a platform from which to step on and win the game, but unfortunately we gave away two goals that you wouldn’t be happy schoolboys conceding.

“There was a mix-up for the first goal and for the second it was too easy for the lad to get the shot away, we’ve dropped it and they’ve followed up with the rebound.

“It was disappointing because you could see our lads’ heads drop. I think the way we conceded the goals affected us. You’d like to think we’d get a more positive response to try and get the game back. They were shocked at how poor the goals were.”

Millen confirmed that former England keeper David James made a call to defender Liam Fontaine on the first goal but that the message didn’t get through: “There was communication between the two of them, which led to the mix-up. Jamo did call for it, but it never got there.

“Unfortunately, we gave Ipswich two goals and they’ve not had to play particularly well to beat us today, which is disappointing.”

A win is a win Mr Keane. I would be more than happy if we didnt play great all season and win every game 2-0. Very good to see Scotland get his first so quick! And Priskin scoring as well. Maybe a good partnership there?????

Ten points from 4 games. Joint top of the league. Into 3rd round of CC. Won five, drawn one. Priskin getting two goals in four league games, and MoM today!
I must be dreaming! And that with injuries and limited signings. Maybe less is more after all?? wake me up in May when we get promoted!

I thought we were excellent today so it's surprising to hear both managers playing us down. Created plenty of chances and were very solid at the back, the side are really starting to look like a cohesive unit and a team.

COYB!

I really enjoyed it. Thrilled to see Scotland score on his debut, & possibly even more pleased to see Priskin play well & score for the first time at home. I know it wasn't the greatest performance, but results are what counts.

I think Roy is trying to keep expectations down! Although not a thrilling performance I still think we were much better than Bristol. We hit the bar 3 times and score 2 goals. Manchester United - under RK's leadership were the masters of playing poorly and winning! I would take a win over performance every time.

Now come on ME - back the boys and spend a few pounds!!

p.s. ChambersM et al have been very quiet recently. Perhaps they will post a 100% POSITIVE comment tonight .....

It really is sad to say this but surely now we are seeing that most of the negative posters on this site aren't actually town fans. After the last 6 results, this site has been much quiter except for those of us who have been continually optimistic and realistic such as myself, jas0999 etc who have continued to post our though unlike the moaners who dont seem to enjoy seeing us play well.

Anyhoo, today was the most I have enjoyed a game fo a while, Priskin in particular was superb, as was Leadbitter, Hyam looked solid along with the back 5, Scotland will be delighted with a debut goal. This season is shaping up brilliantly, that we would win against a good side without playing as well as we could and also hit the woodwork three times.

Surprised to see on the BBC website we only had 46 percent of possession. I thought we were way better than Bristol City. I guess I'll have to get rid of these rose coloured specs!

I'm inclined to agree with jas; the last thing RK wants is for the players to start believing their own hype and becoming complacent.

This should keep their feet on the ground, and keep them all pushing even harder for their place.

Dream start. COYB

muhrensleftfoot - I couldn't get to the game today so had the BBC bit on that you mention. Isn't worth looking at them stats because according to that at half time we had ZERO shots on target and ONE off target, yet the TWTD report says we hit the crossbar TWICE! Does that not count as on target?

Well done Roy and the team, what a great start to the season.
As i have stated in the past , it takes time when a new manager comes in.
Time that most fans were prepared to give as they could see what Roy was trying to achieve. We havn,t won anything yet i know, but thing are certainly looking alot more optimistic.
As for the anti keanes...your comments on here are a bl**dy embarrassment!

I would say sixty fourty possession in fact we held on to the ball very well and to take a classic majilton phrase and turn it on its head we did not give the ball away cheaply. Not sure what top players would come here as from what I saw today its only bench warming on offer!

Ipswich had far more possession however most of our shots hit the bar or post that is classed as a off target shot. I think the stats must have been filed by the dodgy linesman running on the churchman side!

My first look at the town this season. First thing to strike me was the number of faces I didn't recognise, including the subs, most of whom look like they should be back in school on Thursday.
I thought we looked ok against a very poor Bristol City side who helped us out in the shape of David James mistakes.
I was seriously un-impressed with Fulop from a distribution point of view and his kicking from hand and ground is exceptionally poor.
He needs to be a bit sharper IMO and perhaps throw rather than kick. Having said that the out field players need to get themselves out of the area quicker and give him the options.
Still as mentioned elsewhere on this site - 10 points from 12 and still in the League Cup - great start and hopefully the lads can keep it going.

Good performance, Great Result. Interesting the comments being made concerning the embarrasing negativity of some from last season.

You have to question whether this brigade were actually fans in the first place. I'm not sure that you can be a true fan if all you do is whinge incessantly when things go wrong then don't offer any praise when its due.

I expect we'll see a few of them back when we lose a couple of games.

Well done to the team. I thought it was a good performance and we were well on top, aside from the last 10 minutes of the first half. We need more strength in depth, especially up front, but delighted with the result and performance overall!

What a contrast to last season!, but that's why there was so much criticism - it was kinda deserved. It looks like Keane has turned things around (although it's still early doors). Perhaps though C + E's inability/lack of faith in Keane might be our undoing.

But, amazing start to the season.

I thought we played quite well. Peters and Edwards played well on the right, Priskin and Scotland had a good game upfront, Fulop good in goal not like he had that many saves to make though, defence was good although getting caught out a few times, and midfield was good at getting back, making tackles and assisting strikers. Hmmmm I can't agree, I thought we were weak today, got 2 goals from mistakes.

Lots of hoof ball, oh well good to win when playing bad!

i know its easy to get carried away after such a great start, but i think keane seems to be very good at keeping players' and fans' feet on the ground. In a way i'm glad to hear that we didnt play great, because the type of teams that end up in the top 6 are teams that grind out wins in games that they don't even play well in. With a small squad we will become more of a unit which will drive us on through the season. @ comments about the relationship between Clegg Evans and Keane, i really hope its untrue because keane doesnt seem to be the type of person to put up with it. Anyway, another win in the bag, and a big game next at a struggling pompey side who we can easily match and maybe grab a win against! COYB!

What a start to the season, 10pts from 12pts. I'm a positive person but even i didn't expect this, the good thing is aswell QPR and Cardiff having just signed Bellamy are the ones in the limelight so we can hopefully just go about our business. It is only 4 games in so we have too keep our feet on the ground but i could get used to this.
As most have said, a win is a win regardless of performance, if you won the lottery you wouldn't be disappointed because you wanted to win with different numbers!
Obviously in an ideal world we would play well everygame aswell but like most i'd except another x amount of those kind of 2-0's than the ones where we play well but lose 2-0.
Keep it going everyone.Good stuff.

Raedwald 625...Why do you think that Clegg & Evans have a lack of faith in Keane?
