Keane Set for New Deal?
Keane Set for New Deal?
Sunday, 29th Aug 2010 10:18

Town have begun discussions with boss Roy Keane regarding a contract extension, according to a report in one of Sunday’s papers. Keane’s current deal is up at the end of the season.

The club are said to be ready to offer Keane a two-year extension to his current Portman Road contract on improved terms.

Earlier in the week chief executive Simon Clegg said that talks regarding the former Ireland skipper’s future would take place at a later date: “At some stage before the end of the season we will sit down and have a discussion with the manager.

"Without any doubt he loves living in this part of the world and as I have said before he is the man that the owner and myself believe can take this club forward.”

Hope its sorted out soon , and he gets some cash to bring in decent loans i.e. RB,CM(attack minded) and possibly a striker.

Whooo slow down Mr Evans and put that pen back in your pocket. 4 games is not enough to merit a new contract.

i agree pies. if at the end of the season we are in a chance then fine. also if we've got the money to give roy a payrise surely we've got the money for a permanent signing

Agree I_Like_Pies. It has been a good month (a VERY good month) and hats off to RK and the boys for that, but only a few weeks ago it looked like RK's days were numbered and that he had passed the point of no return. A number of people wanted him gone before a ball had even been kicked. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, and RK should be judged on where we are at the end of the season, not now. RK's contract lasts to the end of the season and, if things are still going well, we should start contract discussions in the new year.

Give him time and he will turn it around was said last season. I know that it's only a few games in but it's a decent start so let the talking begin between Clegg and Roy. I think by the end of the season with some additions to the squad we could be up near the top and who knows by that time he could have deserved it. Stick with him Marcus and he will get us back in the Prem, changing managers every 2 years doesn't help anyone. COYB

Keeeeeeeeeeeano

I always new he would be successful with us, now sign him on now before a big club comes in for him when we are flying high at the end of the season!

I don't think it's true.. I don't think ME/SC will start talking until new year. I like Keane, and this has been a great start to the season.. But let's just take it easy, if RK loves this part of the world an enjoys his time at Ipswich then I'm sure he's not a risk to leave and let his contract run out..

Roy Keane was given a 2-year contract and a very clear objective that he and the club agreed: promotion. Keane said he will have failed if he does not achieve this. Surely we should therefore give him a new contract if he gets us promoted, as falling short of the play-offs again will not be acceptable. If we make the play-offs and do not go up then consider whether a new contract is appropriate at the time. Now is not the time to give him a new deal; we've had a great start to the season but as many have said the league is a marathon not a sprint.

I would prefer the club looks at renewing the contracts of players whose contracts are up in June and who could therefore agree free-transfer contracts with other teams in about 4 months' time. That includes our captain, David Norris!

This issue is not really relevant. If Roy wants to leave - for whatever reason - he will so we aren't really protecting ourselves by giving him a longer contract. If we end up in lower mid table again & Evans wants to get rid, it will cost him.

Well done marcus. It is plain for all to see (or should be) that roy has what it takes. Don't know how long before we are promoted but is now a case of when not if.

Wait. One month doesn't a season make.

Clearly the right decision. The club has been performing at play off level since our first victory last season. He has turned the club round and has got a squad that is playing for him and is loyal to him. Once he has extended his contract it should be easier to deal with the players whose contracts are coming to an end. A new contract wont guarantee that he stays, but it will help.

Jesus calm down people .... read the story not the headline...
"at some point before the end of the season we will sit down and have a discussion with the manager"

on that note if we are looking good by january id give him another year regardless of wether we get promoted or not because of al the sorting out he has had to do.

keane is a manager who takes no shhiit. if you dont want to play for him then bye, which i think is good. He has now got his team and his tactis have been spot on, take nothing away from him we have beaten good teams with a limited squad, and the players have been excellent and want to play for him, next month will be keane's hardest i think and im sure we'll come out on top, he deserves manager of month, undefeated inc cup run, with many injuries and a small squad.

I will be happy for Keane to commit long term. With a new contract Keane will defo be rewarded with a new player kitty, which will see us promoted.

if contract talks have started (i wouldn't have thought so) but the new contract wont be signed untill at least january. i also dont think its about money with keane its about status after all he dont need to work he chooses to work.

Sounds like paper talk to me, I wouldn't read too much into this. As Clegg said its likely to be later on in the season

Sorry...'play off level since our first win last season'. JohnTy what are you on and can I have some? Did you watch us last year? We were atrocious...and four wins in the first month of the new season does not warrant a new contract, this is a joke!

get lost chambers you cant be pleased you just dont like him your either a canary..a rangers fan...a liverpool fan..a man-city fan or an arsenal fan and completly bias against Keane nothing you say ever makes sense

I'm looking at the bigger picture....if you think we were in play off form at all last season you don't know anything about football. And you're right I don't like him...and I am a town fan.

Did anyone stop to think one of the reasons ME might not be too keen on giving out more money is the RK on has this year left on his contract. If he dishes out millions for players and RK leaves then a new manager night want more money for different players. Tieing him to a new contract might be what ME wants to release more funds.

ChambersM, if you are indeed a town fan, then why have you not been on this site praising the recent performances and results, yet are the first to say something negative when there is a poor result/signing/lack of signing? I can accept that perhaps you dont like Keane, but would you really rather be in the championship without him, than the premier league with him? If the answer to that is yes, then you are indeed not a town fan. However if you wuld answer no, then try showing some support once in a while.

It is of course early days but Keane IS the right man for the job and having off-loaded the dead wood at the club, Town can now move on.

Keane must stay on board before the Celtic's and the Manchester United's of this world start sniffing around again. If they do, then Town would be compensated handsomely, which they won't be if his contract is due to end soon.
