Keane: Priskin More Settled
Keane: Priskin More Settled
Monday, 30th Aug 2010 09:20

Boss Roy Keane says striker Tamás Priskin is more settled at the club this year and is pleased with the Hungarian’s performances so far. Priskin netted his first home goal for the Blues on Saturday to set Town on their way to their 2-0 victory over Bristol City.

Keane said: “Tamás is a talented boy. We work with the boy every day and we looked at him before he came to the club. Sometimes, particularly strikers, need a bit of luck and let’s be honest, when he came to the club last year we weren’t exactly flying or playing with loads of confidence.

“Strikers need to be getting chances all the time. Tamás had some last year, but it didn’t work out for him, but he got his chance up at Middlesbrough and took it, he scored today, had a hand in the other goal and was unlucky with another shot which went just past the post.

“Tamás is a talented boy,” Keane continued, “but like any player at the club, we always want that bit more and there’s more to come from Tamás. He’s still young and I think the hardest position on the field is striker. I’d love to say midfield because I played there, but I think striker’s a hard role at a football club.

“He’s settled into the football club now and I think Márton Fülöp coming in has helped him, he’s comfortable with Márton. We’re pleased with Tamás, he’s a good player.”

The Blues boss says Priskin’s fellow frontman Jason Scotland benefited from the Carling Cup tie at Crewe in midweek: “I think the run-out the other night helped him, it gave him a feel for the club and the players.”

“I think there’s more to his game than just [sniffing out goals], I think his hold-up play was decent. But there’s a lot more to come from Jason, remember he didn’t play a lot of football at Wigan in pre-season because he didn’t seem to be in the manager’s plans.

“So,there’s a lot more to come from Jason and Tamás, and hopefully over the next few weeks we might have some of our injured boys back. But I still think we’re short of players. I’m glad we go into the break with no more injuries or suspensions.”

Keane is also delighted that his other Trinidadian is becoming increasingly influential: “Carlos got married for a second time in the summer, maybe we should all get married twice, it’s probably cost him a few quid but he’s come back with a spring in his step!”

The Town manager says the trials and tribulations of pre-season have ended up helping the squad: “The expectations will obviously rise and you have to deal with that and enjoy it. When we came back for pre-season there was a lot of negativity around the club, players leaving, players not signing, targets all ready to sign but deals not getting done.

“But I think it’s worked in our favour, we came back for pre-season and we didn’t exactly go anywhere exotic. We hoped to go to Portugal and Spain [for warm weather training], but budgets were in place and we ended up going to Felixstowe. But it’s created a spirit amongst the players.”

Keane reiterated that he doesn’t expect any moves in or out before the transfer window closes on Tuesday: “There’ll be no strengthening at the club over the next 48 hours.”

Think this may be another dig at board - budgets in place so we ended up in felixstowe!!! Still won't complain at results and prisken and edwards are like two new signings - I know who I'd prefer on right wing between walters and edwards! As for prisken he is a oyung lad, a long way from home who joined a flagging team with no moral - put yourself in his position no wonder his head was down!! Now his close friend is here, thee manager has backed him one hundred per cent - and even the fans are now behind him - with a bit of luck he could become a star in the making and be worth millions this time next year! I personally think if we went up he has the skill and footballing brain to be a success at the next level. But me reach into your pocket we need back up and what better time to attract top players than when we are flying high!!

after he scored on saturday you could see the confidence in him rise, all of a sudden his head was up & he was chasing them down & making the opposition make mistakes, he's off the mark now & i think we'll see the reason why he makes the Hungarian national side, Ghoulash anyone !

Well said Keano

I wonder if it is a coincidence that once we sign 2 players (Scotland and Fulop) the performances of there fellow countrymen goes up?

Certainly looks to have more confidence this year. Played well against Bristol City. COYB!

You're so right. Confidence is the key to it all. I thought Tamas might shrink into his shell when he slashed that chance against the bar in the first half but no, RK pushed him into a more forward position (as opposed to his wide left role in the first half) and wow did he respond. Up till now I thought that he was a complete waste of space but against BC he was the real deal, strength, pace and a positive attitude, and it's like signing a new striker.

Tamas, you've shown us what you can do. Go on and make yourself a legend. Another 18 goals this season would be a start.

Who would of new what has happened so far this season! Losing 3 nil to Sheffield united at home on the day of the season, playing awful with the supporters calling for keane to go! People were moaning during the summer with only Kennedy coming in and loads of players going out! But with 3 weeks into the season we have won 5 out of six games, into the third round, with two clean sheets and already 12 goals scored! There is new blood in the team ~ Scotland, fulop, kennedy, odea, townsend and the youngster from sunderland! The difference this year from last is all these players want to play for itfc! The likes of lisbie and co couldn't give a s**t! It looks like we have new players! Peters, smith, leadbitter, Norris, hyam, Edwards and prisken! All playing brilliantly and showed none all this last season! I have to give it to keane he has turned this club around! And I bet he knew what he was doing all along! However I know we have had a great start, but we still need cover for places! In keane we trust! COYB!

It makes you wonder if Counago's disruptive personality contributed to Tamas' lack of confidence last season. He appears to be a very different character and I am very much looking forward to watching him become a fans favorite.

Think Felixstowe was a suitable reward for last season. Portugal next pre-season!

Life is so much better when we win. Thank you Roy for turning it around - I admit I did have doubts but can see now you have got rid of the bad eggs and we have a happy squad now. Nothing is won yet but at least its encouraging.

Keane is right that we need more players, as on Saturday if he wanted to change things in an attacking sense the only option was Ronan Murray, a 5'7" 18-year-old who is yet to score a league goal. We also have no proven cover at right back, and little decent cover for our key three midfielders: Hyam, Norris and Leadbitter (unless Hourihane can come good of course, but I've yet to see him).

Great start to the season - well done to Roy, Tamas and the boys!

What a legend ! ... and as for the team its great to see us starting to get wins week in week out , just hope it continutes are we in for a first 3 wins in a row since keane was hired ? , we should really beat portsmouth though !

Edwards look a great player , priskin played really well nice little touches especially the little flick back to scotland which he hit the bar and he took his goal very well . the 3 in midfield are all batterlers and there winning us games , i great to watch .. as for the back four , we look so sound ! , McAurly was a class act saturday and has been all season ! .

Is looking forward to portsmouth game ! , wickham will be back we hope as well so not a bad player to bring on . This good start is good for wickham as we dnt have to rush him back which means he will come back strong as ever !!

COYB !

I know its early days & only one month in but all that money that Keano 'wasted' in so many peoples eyes last year is starting to look like money well spent. Apart from Martin, at the mo the others have all definately brought something extra to the squad. Doesn't this reinforce the argument to trust him with spending/targets.

Really chuffed with Priskin, he's rolling his sleeves and fighting for the team. Superb. COYB.

Once again a great result and Tamas is looking like a totally different player this season and hopefully him and Jason Scotland will form a great partnership with plenty of goals and Conor Wickham neednt be under half as much pressure to play his own game and more importantly develop at his own pace which will bear us more fruit in the end.

I think the arrival of Márton Fülöp has helped Tamás. Other factors must be the backing of the manager and confidence which comes with scoring goals. I was not too impressed with his performance in the Burnley match, he is more effective playing in the centre than out wide. If Tamás maintains his current form Roy wont be under such pressure to play Conor in every match.

I think I am dreaming !!!! If any other club started this year with Priskin and Scotland up front, I would have laughed at them !!! Now, I do believe that they (especially Priskin) are not the strike force to achieve anything this year but after Bristol City, I may have to reconsider that. Anyway, well done to each and every player on the start to the season.

Keane out though !!!!! Not the man for us.

Great start to the season. I am sure we are all disappointed that we are not in a position to strengthen the squad further - but this shouldn't take anything away from the decent showings to date. Just hope we don't get any injuries or suspensions ...

Agree with Bluelady though - Roy does appear to be having a dig at the board ...
