Quiet Final Day at Portman Road
Quiet Final Day at Portman Road
Tuesday, 31st Aug 2010 18:14

The final day of the transfer window came and went without any moves in or out of Portman Road, as promised by manager Roy Keane over the weekend, despite one or two rumours throughout the day.

A newspaper report in Leicester linked the Foxes with a move for Town defender Damien Delaney, but there seemed to be little in the story, while late claims that Sunderland’s Andy Reid was in the vicinity of Portman Road proved similarly illusory.

Persistant Welsh reports that Town are chasing Cardiff’s Stephen McPhail could ultimately prove to have something truth to them with the Football League’s ‘emergency’ loan window opening next Tuesday and with Blues boss Roy Keane understood to want to add a midfielder to his squad.

Championship managers will also take a keen interest in the players omitted from Premier League clubs’ 25-man squads, which are announced tomorrow at 5pm.

Town fans will probably be most grateful to see the transfer window close with Connor Wickham not amongst the many players exiting Portman Road, while Jason Scotland, Mark Kennedy, Márton Fülöp, Conor Hourihane and loanees Andros Townsend and Darren O'Dea have joined the club in recent weeks.

Disappointing, but not unexpected.

What I can't understand is if McPhail for example is going to join on loan next week - why was the deal not concluded today for say a season long loan? Emeregncy loan is just 93 days isn't it? That would mean he will miss the Christmas fixtures??

Damn. Reid would have been a very good signing.
Maybe we will get him next week.

Watched it until the final few minutes on SSN. Got a good squad but a few extra players to cover could have been useful. COYB!

McPhail on loan and a right back and we're doing nicely.

maybe he was down here today but didnt have time to sort out the deal so will happen next week? you know how long it takes Clegg to find a pen that works!

Would have preferred an extra face or two coming in, but things are going pretty well at the moment and a few of the injured players should be coming back over the next few weeks, so we should be ok for numbers...

Are we sure there are no late signings? Last year I seem to remember that Liam Rosenior's loan was announced the day after the transfer deadline.

It is disappointing, especially after the large fee we received for the sale of Walters. The first team is looking very good, but we do lack cover in key areas and still have a lack of firepower in the event of injuries, suspensions or loss-of-form to Scotland, Priskin and Wickham.

As for the timing of the Premier League's squad of 25, you'd have thought they could have had this deadline a few days before the transfer window shut so that players excluded had a chance to move on!!

Andy Reid is playing for Sunderland reserves tonight while making his return from injury. Let's find our level here which is buying championship and league 1 players. Anything else is fantasy.

I think our three loan signings next week will be colback, and any others who have been left out of their 25 man squad!

Keane said he wants another striker, so we'll see what loans can be done. I would wager a right back to cover Peters too.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if this is it - until January anyway. Hope I'm wrong though as we could obviously do with some cover in several areas: most notably RB and also CM imo, just in case Leadbitter or Norris does get injured. Plus another striker would be nice - Jason Roberts on an emergency loan would do just fine Mr Clegg!

The emergency loan window often see's deals agreed by way of loan and finalised contractually as permanent deals in January, usually a loan fee is paid in the begining which is essentialy the transfer fee and formalised as a free transfer officially in jan, it's how we signed stead.

i'm actually more looking forward to the 'loan window' than i was for the transfer one, like many people i'm unsure about where the money from walters' sale has gone, but i'm glad we'll have this money left over should we need to bolster the squad in january. Loans should be easy to get with the 25 man squads being announced, only thing i'm worried about is if we do get promoted this season, we will have to do alot in the transfer window to make our squad capable at premiership level. Anyway, things are good as they are so we'll see wont we! COYB!

Sorry that appeared twice, I'm very interested to see what the championship is gonna look like like by the time the action kicks off again, there is gonna be shed loads of talented players kickin their heels when the prem squads get reduced, the obvious move for them would be the championship on loan. Gonna be very interesting.

Agree that a RB and CM are needed. I noticed on the PFA list that Stephen Wright is out of contract and looking for a club. I think we could do a lot worse for a reserve right back and he has played for Sunderland. (sorry couldn't resist the last bit!)

Doubt we'll see colback. Any player under 21 doesnt count in the 25 man squad so can be used anytime. Means man city can leave balotelli out of their 25 but still use him. Strange rule, but we may benifit from it? Would think loan deals will be done just before the "emergency loan" window shuts so they can stay til jan when there club can decide to keep or sell.

Same here to at Windsor Road, Retford. Apart from the noisy bin men collecting the bins that woke me up which was a good thing as I ran out and had to ask them which bin the cat went in blue or green.

I think the fact that the premier league squad situation will be clearer tomorrow makes sense in which direction we go.

Why get McPhail when we could get some kick ass player from the premier league.

Call me crazy but go with me on this for a bit, Roque Santa Cruz is no way going to make the Man City 25 so why don't we make a cheeky offer for him. We are playing good football, we have a good history and if Roy could give his old team mate Mark Hughes a call (I know he is at fulham but he brought Santa Cruz twice and they are still close apparently) to put in a good word, why wouldn't he come. Craig Bell-end-amy (It makes me sick to even type his name) went to Cardiff, the championship is a well respected and tough league. If Santa Cruz is top scorer by January, he could force his way back into the Man City 25 for the latter part of the season or get a move abroad, either way keep his fitness up.

Is that too ridiculous?

I think the team we have at the moment is playing at their max and has done wonders this season. Every player seems to be giving their all and this shows in the results that we have achieved so far. Well done to Roy Keane and the team so far!
I can't help feeling though that we need at least 2/3 reinforcements to make a realistic strike for promotion this season. We can't expect these youngsters to just keep playing game after game at the same level- they will need to rest. All the good squads in the past have had a rotation system-but I don't feel we can do this at the moment. Its a great shame that the board don't invest now- we are in a good position and with the right reinforcements we could make a realistic stab at it.
Would love to have Roque Santa Cruz- but no way could we get him at the moment! Maybe Jason Roberts or someone of a similar ilk! (btw- think QPR got a bargain in Tommy Smith-very good player at this level. Hulse wasn't a bad signing either...)
Hope we can continue this set of results-
