US Keeper Receives International Clearance
US Keeper Receives International Clearance
Tuesday, 31st Aug 2010 19:41

United States U20 international keeper Cody Cropper has received the international clearance which formalises the academy scholarship he began at the start of the season. The Minnesotan, 17, was given the OK last week and made his debut for the U18s in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Leeds at Playford Road.

The 6ft 4in tall stopper impressed the Blues’ youth set-up during a trial at Playford Road last season, having previously spent similar spells with Leicester, Arsenal, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves and West Ham.

The keeper is in the US U20 squad for a tournament in Peru which starts next week. The US youngsters face Paraguay on September 6th, Colombia on September 8th and the hosts on September 10th with the winners and other places decided by play-offs on September 12th.

Cropper, whose father Joe is English, has also represented the United States at U17 level.

Cropper rhymes with Shot Stopper.
That's a good start.

Great, that will provide some backup in goal, as I had been a bit worried with only four goalkeepers at our disposal! ;-) Seriously though this is good news but I hope the wage bill of our main four keepers is not too high. It really does seem strange to me that we have as many goalkeepers (Fulop, Murphy, Lee-Barrett, McLoughlan) as we do strikers (Scotland, Wickham, Priskin, Murray).

If his Dad is English, why doesn't the lad have UK citizenship?

Seriously tho if these types of players are our future then let it be and bring in more, as long as they are good enough to kick Manc's arses in a couple of years or even sooner............... the future is bright the future is blue and I ain't talking about the movie blue either!

Nice to see Town continuing its tradition of a strong youth policy.

Competition for places right the way down to the youth squad will ensure we foster a competative spirit right through the club.

Welcome aboard Cody !! COYB !!

If his Dad is English, why doesn't the lad have UK citizenship?

Because his Mother is American and he has lived in the USA all his life, although he could qualify for England if he wished.

Good goalkeepers are too often overlooked by football mangers and a good one can save you ten goals a season at least; not to mention the points they help to accrue. Keane is one of the few managers who sees sense in having competition for places in this domain and I for one applaud him for doing it.
