McAuley and Northern Ireland Win
McAuley and Northern Ireland Win
Friday, 3rd Sep 2010 22:10

Defender Gareth McAuley won his 23rd full cap as Northern Ireland began their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win in Slovenia. The former Town skipper played the full 90 minutes for Nigel Worthington’s side.

Manchester United's Corry Evans netted a 70th minute winner to give the Northern Irish their first victory in 10 matches and end a seven-match goal drought.

Elsewhere, Tamás Priskin played the last half hour for Hungary and won his 28th cap as his side lost their opening qualifier 2-0 in Sweden. Town keeper Márton Fülöp remained on the bench throughout.

Defender Darren O’Dea was left out of the Republic of Ireland matchday squad which won 1-0 in Armenia. The on-loan Celtic man had been expected to be on the bench despite picking up a knee injury earlier in the week.

Midfielder Conor Hourihane won his second Republic of Ireland U21 cap as his side lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Switzerland. Town team-mate Shane O’Connor was left out of the squad having been called into the travelling party at the last minute.

Jaime Peters and the Canadian senior side are in action in a friendly against Peru on Saturday.

I must say, I watched the Northern Ireland match instead of the England match and McAuley had a man of the match performance making many goal line clearances!

Are the republic are making our players travel and not giving them games out of spite?

Good win for the N'irish and against a team who were in the WC...all be it slovenia.

dont know about anyone else... but when internationals come around i worry about our players picking up injuries more than i worry about England results lol especially now!

Yes indeed a game worth watching indeed! 3 points from the off blastedly excellent! Gareth played very well as a right back and his height was essential on more than one occassion.

It's a pity the ref was blind. Anyone found out why Kyle got booked yet?
