McAuley Helps Northern Ireland to Famous Draw
McAuley Helps Northern Ireland to Famous Draw
Friday, 8th Oct 2010 23:01

Town defender Gareth McAuley and Northern Ireland achieved a famous 0-0 draw with Italy in their Euro 2012 qualifier at Windsor Park this evening. The former Blues skipper played the full 90 minutes and picked up his 24th cap.

Ex-Blues loanee David Healy was also in Nigel Worthington's side. Northern Ireland’s next qualifying match is against the Faroe Islands in Toftir on Tuesday.

Tamás Priskin was a 64th minute sub for Hungary as they thrashed San Marino 8-0 in Budapest but failed to get amongst the scorers. Priskin was winning his 29th full cap, while team-mate Márton Fülöp was an unused sub.

The Hungarians face Finland in Helsinki on Tuesday in their next Euro 2012 qualifier.

McAuley had a superb game, almost scored at the end, shame Healey missed a sitter in the first half! McAuley is certainly at the top of his game at the moment, with a fit Delaney in the team and Tommy smith getting better and better we have a great defence with Fulop probably one of the best keepers in the Championship.

I have supported Ipswich since watching my first match in 1970 against the Arsenal. The Robson er was awesome and maybe never repeated! but last season I had serious doubts about the tea and whether they would avoid the drop, like southampton, sheffield Weds., man city and Charlton have had to endure to name a few over recent seasons. However this season there is a different team playing , spirit and confidence, and Roy Keane has got HIS team , a quality defence, good midfield and with a bit of luck and no injuries a strike force that may work in time, so I am confident that come May we will still be living the dream of premiership football. Would love to see Ipswich beat Norwich in the play off final ......

Northern Ireland played well, had a few chances to win it but a draw was a fair result.

@martleshamitfc - I would take automatic in a heratbeat, but a derby play off would be something else.... As long as we win!

How can this be described as a famous draw? It only happened last night!

I agree about McAuley, though. So far this season he has been absolutely superb. Reminds me a bit of Allan Hunter and I think he is definitely capable of playing at Premier level.

I don't think anyone can argue that Roy has really improved us a defensive unit. Of course McAuley has a lot to do with that. I think Kennedy is a superb addition, whilst we also have O'Dea, Delaney and Smith. A right back would be good though.

Well done to McAuley last night. I thought he was excellent.

I agree FifeBlue, a very good result but hardly famous, Italy are in a huge transitional period at the moment, to be honest half that side that played last night I hadn't even heard of. But a decent point and a great display by GMaC, hopefully back injury free after the Faroe's game

Did anyone actually watch the game,

Yes Macca done good but if Italy like us had a goal scorer then they would have won about 4-0 or 4-1, I hink it will be a different story over there place.

That's not to take anything away from the Northen irish team though as a point againt a Sleeping giant like Italy Is good where ever you get it, But lets not get carried away quite yet, they'll probably go and lose against the faroe isles and undo all the good work done on Friday night....
