Town Draw West Brom at Home
Saturday, 30th Oct 2010 12:26

Town have drawn West Brom at home in the quarter-final of the Carling Cup.

The sides last met in the competition in the 1969/70 season at the third round stage with the tie going to a replay. The first game at Portman Road ended 1-1, Charlie Woods scoring for the Blues and Colin Suggett, Town's chief scout during the George Burley era, netting for the Baggies.

In the replay at the Hawthorns, the home side won 2-0 with Bobby Hope and Jeff Astle scoring the goals.

Last season, as Albion marched into the Premier League, Town were defeated 2-0 at the Hawthorns with Youssuf Mulumbu and Robert Koren on the scoresheet.

At Portman Road, the teams drew 1-1, Grant Leadbitter netting a penalty and Chris Brunt grabbing an equaliser in the final minute.

Overall, Town have won 32 games between the sides (30 in the league), West Brom 21 (20) with 16 (14) ending in draws.

Roberto Di Matteo's men currently sit sixth in the Premier League having made an excellent start to the season.

Carling Cup - Quarter-Finals
Arsenal v Wigan Athletic
Birmingham City v Aston Villa
West Ham United v Manchester United
Ipswich Town v West Bromwich Albion

The ties will take place during the week commencing November 29th.

Excellent draw! At home and the match is winnable for a place in the SEMI FINALS! Why is it some people always want a "big" team? I would rather see Ipswich progress and do well, rather than be knocked out for the sake of seeing Arsenal or Man Utd.

.....a great draw....and message to club "make it affordable and fill the ground".....wont be able to make that one just have a better excuse for pulling the lad out of school when we play in the away leg of the semi finals.....Now lets concentrate on Millwall and 3 points!!

West Brom at home is a good draw. Very tough but winnable. I think the ideal draw would have been West Ham at Portman Road as we'd get a 25,000 gate and more winnable than West Brom. But, all in all, WBA isn't bad...

West Brom away on the other hand would have been the worst possible draw. A small gate and a guaranteed 2-0 defeat.

WBA at home is a winnable game which we will have to play to our strengths in meaning play 4-4-2 not 1 upfront. if it would have been away it would have been very little chance of winning but lets hope they play a weaker team COYB!!!

Can't complain with WBA at home. We would have to produce a top performance to get through to the semis. Only two wins from wembley!!!!COYB

Will some fans stop being so negative saying it is a worthless cup! It maybe seen as worthless to some of the big clubs, but look at it realistically, Ipswich town are in the quater finals of the league cup and have been a given a very winnable home draw. We are the only championship team still in the draw and that is something we should be proud of, whatever the competition, there is no point playing the matches if you dont aim to win.

Mark, I would rather fill PR to the brim and lose to Arse or Manc than have a half full stadium to see us dwindle to WBA.

I think a few of you are doing WBA a huge misjudgement, they are not where they are in the league on luck, and yes I know they wont stay there but they have a decent team. I also know with this being a tin pot cup he is going to send out a few fringe players, but the best players in our first team are about equal to WBA fringe players.

As for the attendence, well with Town now being nothing but a promotional tool for a rich tool, we will pump up the prices and bring in about 15,000.

If we got Arse or Manc, yes we might lose but in a full house and at least with some decent footy to watch.
