Keane: It Could Have Ended 7-4
Keane: It Could Have Ended 7-4
Saturday, 30th Oct 2010 18:15

Town boss Roy Keane felt his side’s 2-0 home victory over Millwall could have ended 7-4 with both teams having plenty of opportunities to score. Lions boss Kenny Jackett thought his side were unlucky with two penalty decisions.

Keane said: “I thought it was a cracking game, both teams did well, it could have been 7-4. I thought we looked dangerous today.

“Credit to Millwall they caused us lots of problems, had high energy and a good spirit, even when we went a goal up.

“It was a pity we couldn’t have finished the game off earlier but 2-0 and a clean sheet was a good result for us. It was a good performance.

“The back four and the keeper did well and Millwall did very well too I thought, they gave us lots of problems and were unlucky not to score themselves.

“I thought we would have to play really well to get a result today and I thought the players did well.”

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett was unhappy that referee Kevin Friend failed to award a penalty when the ball struck Grant Leadbitter’s hand in the first half and thought Town’s spotkick when Danny Shittu fouled Tamás Priskin was similarly debatable: “I felt we came out on the wrong side of the penalty decisions. My first impression was that that handball was a clear penalty.

“But I’ll look at the DVD, I haven’t had an opportunity to look at it again and sometimes when you do that as a manager your viewpoint changes, but for me it was a clear penalty at the time on one look.

“The other one was similar to ours. Sometimes you see them given, sometimes you don’t and between the two of them you do get one generally.”

Keane saw things very differently: “I would disagree 100% with that. In the Coventry game we were punished when the striker got the other side of Gareth McAuley and there was a coming together. If that was a penalty against us, then that was definitely a penalty today.

“I think the handball was more ball to hand. If it had gone against us like a couple of weeks ago you wouldn’t hear me complaining about it.”

Jackett had particular praise for Town’s central defensive pairing of Gareth McAuley and Damien Delaney: “Ipswich have some power at set pieces. Their two centre-halves defended very well, headed a lot of balls out from six or seven yards out, which we have to match, whether that’s scoring goals or defending because they had opportunities from set pieces.

“We probably had the better of it in between the boxes in terms of possession and passing. We put a lot of very good balls into the goalscoring area with quality and either it didn’t break for us or their centre-halves defended very well and headed the ball out of their box.”

I would of said 7-2 personally. We were always the better team in every department, and thank you Keane for putting two up top.

I txt my mate after the game and said it couldve ended 8-4 so I dont agree Keano!!
Excellent entertainment today though and good to see us take our chances and edge a game that couldve gone either way. Usually we end up on the wrong side of this sort of game.
We are due a result against the Blades next week.

I wouldn't describe 25 - 30 minutes of the first as a 'cracking game' but a good start and a good second half providing a decent result none-the-less. We have problems though.

Jackett clearly did his homework and used the width to whip balls into the box against our two centre halves as make shift full backs. Smith and Eastman are not quick or mobile enough to play at full-back, especially Smith. Time and time again he was exposed. Good job we have A Fulop, A Delaney and an outstanding Mcauley to deal with balls in the box like that.

Colback needs to play in the middle for me. We're too narrow when he plays on the left and with Smith behind him there's no width or attacking penetration down the flank. Can't think of many times when full backs were beaten and balls put in from that flank between those two.

Norris and Leadbitter are a bit off the boil at the moment. Too many times Scotland was dropping deeper to help them out and get in the game. No idea why they couldn't get a grip on that midfield in the first half. Keane clearly sorted that one out at half time. Neither were hunting together in the first half to close people down and they both looked a bit pedestrian at times.

All that aside, Priskin was good although he still needs to put in a bit more effort to win us all over! Liked the pairing of Murray and Wickham at the end. Fulop, Mcauley, Delaney and Edwards were quality today.

Next Stop Brammal Lane. Another clean sheet there please and please be fit Kennedy!

Agree in most part with you Keaneish.

I've got to say though some fans that I was sat next to are the epitomy of what is wrong with this club from a supporters point of view at the minute. Look I always understand why people might not like Keane, and would rather have someone in charge etc. And again I understand if people don't like certain players.

But this lad (about 18ish I would guess) and his dad, were sat in south stand upper next to me, my god there was literally nothing that any of the town players could have done to make them give any positive remarks. Murray had been on about 30 seconds and the 18 year old was getting on his back, screaming how he "hated him!"

They didn't cheer when we scored, just stood up and clapped. When subs came on and off they simply moaned they would have brought someone else on etc. When they then complained what a waste there season tickets were this season I'd just had enough of it.

I'm not a season ticket holder, due to shift work and personal commitments there isn't a lot of point me getting one because I wouldn't be able to use it for more than 40% of the games. But I make every game I can, home and away and I think you should always start every game with a blank canvas. Turning up with an attitude that certain players will always disappoint, will always misplace passes etc, then you won't be enjoying the game!

Bit of a rant I know but some fans have to take a good long hard look at themselves and realise that your negative attitudes WILL reflect on the players and in particular the younger ones. They WILL to a certain extent feed off the crowd. The lack of noise created inside PR is embarassing at times, and well trying to start a song in the South Stand is greeted like you've sh@t in their cups of tea!

This afternoon was not the greatest game in the world by any means. But it had entertainment, we created more chances than a lot of other games I can remember this season, and Priskin and Scotland look like they are starting to gel now.

Cheer up you miserable lot or naff off up the A140.

They were a lot better first half, reversed second half. Thought it a pretty dull game to be honest, two teams with no quality. Priskin is still average for me, just can't see him scoring a proper strikers goal (first half poke from a tight angle). Four centre backs still isn't working at all! Eastman is not to it at all I'm afraid, smith better but same story, kept getting caught and millwall had a lot of wing play with balls coming into the box from the by-line (something we never do). If keane consists with playing a central midfielder on the wing he needs to back him up with a full back that will get forward and contribute and support because colback is constantly coming inside, like Norris does when he plays there, why on earth was townsend dropped!! Wingers win you games, as Edwards has the ability to do (thought he wad good today). Two strikers win you games also keane! But hey what do the fans know?

Agree, well said Scowcroft. I would just like to add my own mini moan. To the d**c****ds in the upper tier of the Sir Bobby stand Tom Eastman is 18 years old at best and is in his first full season with the first team. What possible good do you honestly think booing him is going to do ? Either keep quiet, support the lad or go up the A140 and watch the inbreds you dry lunches. Maybe if these sort of people put as much effort into being positive we might have a better atmosphere at PR. Only 2 points off the play offs again, COYB.

Rant over, god these people annoy me !!

Kipper you're completely right. I'm sure people may disagree with me, but even just a few years ago we didn't have this problem with our fans?

When we've had other youngsters come through, they've made exactly the same mistakes these lads are today. I remember Dyers first games. Showed great ability but was getting knocked off the ball too easy. Came back after a pre-season and had gained probably half a stone and it wasn't as much of a problem and he went on from there.

Darren Bent, young, fast and strong. Finishing to begin with lacked top class quality. The fans got behind him like they did Dyer and look how he has turned out.

You might not like Keane, you might not like where they are played or how they are being played, but for gods sake they will notice the crowd more in their younger years and will feed off it. Older more experienced players have probably learnt to block it out but younger ones will notice a lot more when you aren't happy with them. Sure, sometimes its justified but booing lads like Eastman is ridiculous. I agree in part with Chambers about him and Smith and being a bit vulnerable but they are so young and will learn.

If you keep getting on the teams back like some of the fans did this afternoon, you won't get what you want. You won't get promotion etc and you won't see them improve.

Great comments GITGScowcroft. I thought that Eastman had improved even since Northampton and should continue to do so if he is played and NOT booed by the idiots who think it is cool to criticise someone of his age. It is great that Keane is blooding the youth and the last thing they need is for their own fans to turn on them. I thought Wickham and Murray linked up well- assume they played a fair bit together in the Yoofs. I sometimes feel I am a bit too complimentary to players but I feel that if they are giving 100% then that is good enough for me. We ALL make mistakes and, if we are honest, that is the only way to learn.

C'mon you moaners - get behind the lads!

Well, dull football, how many times did you see the two keepers just passing it between them with drop kicks? Boring! Sort it out! Sorry but what do they do in training? Pass it between each other for goodness sake.

Good win today. Completely agree with some of the comments regarding the so-called town fans. I know ipswich has something of a reputation for simpletons inhabting the place but some of the comments posted on here in the last week espeically aimed at some of the younger players has been a joke. Last week after a few bad results this site was bombarded with negative comments about the team, however now after a decent win theres hardly any positive comments at all. Its time for the moaners to except keanes not going anywhere and get behind the team

Keanish I think I love you!!! Couldn't agree more with you, and in particular the murray, wickham partnership, a good to bring on combination! Agree with all about fans too, bio pola showed again today as prisken was given a standing ovation the same guy who was boo'd off a couple of games ago! Eastman and smith put in some great tackles but so clearly out of position. Great to see the twin towers back on top form!

My first game at Portman Road this season. I live in South London so saw the games at the New Den and Selhurst Park. Apart from the 30 minutes or so after our first goal I thought we played some good stuff today. McAuley and Delaney v. impressive. Priskin the best at holding the ball up since Counago, some nice bits of skill today from him too; too nad he couldn't have boosted his confidence by scoring that early chance. Scotland is the first striker we've had since Forster who, when he gets the ball near the six yard box is likely to a) get a powerful shot away and b) it be on target. Not too much to ask from a striker.

I still find it frustrating how poor our set pieces are. What on earth do they do in training all week?! The number of times Leadbitter fails to lift corners beyond the first defender amazes me. We haven't had a decent dead ball player since Darren Currie. Eastman played better today than he did at the New Den but will be sorely exposed by a pacy winger. he is not a fullback, and neither is Smith. But they did ok today (a good goal line clearance by Smith) and no young players trying their best deserve to be booed - not their fault if they are played out of position!

The Little and Large double-act of Wickham and Murray looked impressive and would like to see both always included in the 18. The latter reminds me of Billy Clarke; an irritating handful for the opposition, though still clearly a work in progress. Colback's engine is amazing, he was all over the park. His work rate alone deserved a goal, felt sure he'd bury that one-on-one and how did Livermore miss that open goal at the end? Ouch!! It still concerns me a bit that none of our midfielders have the composure and skill to put their foot on the ball and slide a pass through to the forwards or switch play to the opposite flank with a long well aimed pass, as Garvan, occasionally, did, and which Mr Muhren used to do on a more regular basis.

Finally, credit where it's due, I thought the 1,200 Millwall fans today really added to the atmosphere (someone needed to!). They made a right old racket and I think all the seats are still in place. Result! But we did also make a right din at their place in the Cup. Glad our old boys didn't give them anything to cheer about. I thought Scott Barron played ok, but Liam Trotter (so apt that he now plays so near Peckham!) was totally anonymous, some feat for someone of his stature. So, all in all, aside from a tedious half hour in the first period, an entertaining and really enjoyable afternoon in the sunshine. Boo hiss the clocks going back...

Was nice to see an Ipswich side that looked like a competent football team. I've been lucky enough to only see wins at the games I've been to but we looked at the best I've seen today. It isn't ideal having four centre backs in defence but Smith performed admirably, probably helped by his LCB role for New Zealand and Tom Eastman is really progressing well. I also though Tamas Priskin had his best game in an Ipswich shirt that I have seen. Bringing in an international teammate in Marton Fulop seems to have instilled some confidence in Tamas and, injuries permitting, Scotland, Priskin and Wickham look like good frontline strikers with Murray improving game by game. Hopefully Keane looks to add another striker to enhance competition but for now, hopefully we can kick on and continue the confident performances.

Excellent result today against decent opposition. I do agree with some of the comments here regarding the lack of natural full-backs (and left-midfielders) in the starting lineup, but the result, keeping a clean sheet and the number of chances created show it didn't hinder us too much today.

I'd like to add to the comments on here about booing players. I'm against booing players generally, but have found the booing of Eastman (and Richards before him) to be particularly embarrassing and unacceptable. I cannot understand how anyone could boo players who are from the club's youth system, are born & bred in East Anglia and - regardless of any arguable technical limitations - try their best. Nothing shames me more as an Ipswich fan than these so-called "supporters". I'm not usually for telling people to not bother coming to watch the club, but unless this pathetic element of our support want to change, then our club is far better off without their presence. Can't believe I'm having to go into a rant like this after a great result today but this is something that has sickened me for a long time!

A great game today a really positive performance and it was nice to see keane starting with two up front and putting a abit of faith in priskin. Thought we could have scored more than 2 today but a win is a win and jake livermore's shockin miss will be one to watch again on telly tonight. I also thought keane got them playing as a team again which is something that had gone missing these past couple of weeks.

I would also just like to say my MOM today was the two centre backs there were superb today.

Great result and one that was badly needed after 3 straight defeats. Credit to Milwall they probably deserved a goal for the effort they put in. Very open game and both sides had numerous chances to score. COYB! We have to get a least a point at Sheffield.
