Fülöp Delighted That Priskin's Winning Over the Fans
Fülöp Delighted That Priskin's Winning Over the Fans
Monday, 1st Nov 2010 09:25

Keeper Márton Fülöp says he's delighted that the Portman Road crowd is starting to take to his friend Tamás Priskin and named the striker as Saturday’s man of the match. Priskin, who scored his fourth goal of the season in the Carling Cup tie with Northampton, played an integral role in Jason Scotland’s opening goal against Millwall, then won the penalty which Grant Leadbitter converted in the second half.

Fülöp says he was never in any doubt that the 24-year-old, who was applauded off when substituted in the second half on Saturday, would eventually make an impression at Portman Road: “I always knew that Tamás has great potential. The fans really took to him against Millwall. He needs that bit of confidence to dare to do things and he played without any pressure and for me he was the man of the match.

“He’s gaining confidence with every game, that’s the same for everybody but especially him. He likes an arm around his shoulder. We get on really well, we talk a lot and I hope he will keep continuing scoring goals and giving assists.

“I think for the first goal it was Tamás’s cut-back to Carlos and he kept the ball well. Then he won the penalty, so he made a difference today.”

Priskin's first season with the Blues after his £1.7 million move from Watford was a difficult one and Fülöp says the Hungarian international duo talked often during this spell: “It’s nice to see the crowd warming to him. I was speaking to him a lot last year, he’s one of my best friends.

“It was tough on him when the team wasn’t doing so well. When you come to a new club you need a bit of time to get used to the club.

“I’ve been here two months but I feel like at home. Everybody’s made me feel very welcome, the fans, the players, the staff.

“For some players it’s easy to settle at a new club and for others it takes time. For me it was much easier because Tamás was here already and I knew Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards from Sunderland and Gareth McAuley from when I was at Leicester. When Tamás came here he didn’t know anybody, so it was much easier for me.”

Fülöp jokes that he should be rewarded for his role in Priskin’s resurgence: “Perhaps that should be reflected in terms of wages!”

The 27-year-old, who joined Town from the Black Cats for £750,000 in the summer, is pleased that the Blues got back to winning ways after their run of defeats: “This week was much better than last week when we lost three on the bounce. Now we’ve won two back to back and I’m really happy with it. We’re 11th, that’s not great but I’m sure we’ll move forward. It was a win we needed very much.”

Fülöp felt it was important that Town got going in the opening period against the Lions: “The problem recently was that we’ve gone 2-0 down too easily in the first half of games. Today we weren’t a second half team, we were a 90-minute team, so that’s positive.

“[The bad run] wasn’t the end of the world, I’m sure we will have spells where we will win and spells where we’ll lose, that’s the Championship. We just have to be a bit more consistent than we were last week.

“It was two away games against two play-off teams, Watford and Forest I’m sure will be in the play-offs. But I’m happy we won against Millwall, so let’s talk about that.”

The one-time Tottenham keeper, who gained his fourth clean sheet of the season on Saturday, was grateful to his defenders for some dramatic late goal-line clearances: “That was brilliant. In a matter of 20 seconds Tommy and Gareth showed their determination and I had a bit of luck. The defence did really well. It’s nice to get a clean sheet and I hope I can get many more.”

Fülöp, who says he and the club’s medical staff are working on ways of preventing the stiffness to his back which caused him to miss the Watford match, feels loan midfielder Jake Livermore would have taken his late opportunity more often than not: “When we’re 2-0 up we can afford to miss chances. Jake was unlucky and I’m sure that 99 times out of 100 he will score.

“He’s a very good young player, he was probably a bit surprised by the ball coming back from the post. But that was the right time to miss it!”

Hungary head coach Sándor Egervári was at Saturday's game and was impressed with what he saw: "It was pleasing to see that both players were in the team and both performed well in the clash.

"Priskin assisted for the first goal and for the second the foul was committed against him for Ipswich's penalty. He was clearly the dominant player for his team and did much help his side win."

Fülöp has previously won 21 full caps, while striker Priskin has scored seven goals in 29 Hungary appearances.

bobble - shut up!

Prickin is an awesome player given time and opportunity. He was MOM on Saturday and against Northampton so with the "FANS" behind him - he could score 20+ this season along with Scotland!

Ipswich Fans - So fickle!!

bobble- I think you are undervaluing his contribution so far this season. 4 goals for a player who has come off the bench more than started is a good return on the time he has spent on the pitch. 2 games where he has started- Saturday and against Bristol City- he has played excellently, involved in so much more of the play than just scoring.
I think we have a good set-up with Priskin and Scotland up front. What Keane has so far failed to do is let a striking duo blend and settle together because he is forever chopping and changing, or playing with just the 1 man up there.
So here's to a run in the team for Priskin and Scotland!

Bobble what are you talking about?
We all know he hasn't done great, even he knows that but surely to be a flop you need to be given a chance, he has only been given 11 starts since joining.
Of course you can argue that's because he has not been good enough to start but how can he get better if he's not playing and gaining confidence?
Me and the people I sit with thought Tamas looked a brand new player on Saturday and I hope Keane saw that too and continues to start him up front with Scotland.

We had so many more options when attacking which meant the “hoof” ball wasn't always the way to go (even though we still did it far too much).

We need to get behind the whole team not just Tamas but if we want that “20 goal a season player” then we need to give players like Tamas as much confidence as we can.

He created two goals for us, in fairness.
If he only scores 10 and gets 15+ assists that would be fantastic!
Its great that we have a forward with some creativity and guile.
He has some confidence now and with Scotland in scoring mode we should keep them paired up front.

Although he is still a little rusty in front of goal, there is no denying the effort Tamas is putting in. With a run in the side, he could quickly become the decent striker we need and were hoping for! He reminds me a bit of a lean Shefki Kuqi - lots of huff and puff without necessarily getting the deserved return. But given a couple more games, I have no doubt he will blossom.

COYB!!

PS - love the succinct comment John_Warks_Willy! No beating around the bush, lol

ok back to the post, i have always thought he was a skillful player waiting to show his true potential. I actually think at times he has been almost too clever for us,reading the game well and pre-empting passes that sadly have not happened - or sending a good ball through and the player has not taken the obvious route. However Scotland is a clever player too, his movement is not good but his eye for a goal scoring opportunity is fantastic, personally would prefer Prisken behind Scotland rather than the other way around, as Prisken as the speed and tenacity to beat defenders and get some great balls into Scotland to bang away.

I was delighted to be able to sing Priskin's name on Saturday, well done to the section 6 boys for getting it going (I think it was them as it came from that side of the stand first). It's been clear to me from the get-go that Priskin can be a really good player for us, if we give him a chance and the north stand continues to get behind him. The real fans are obviously desperate for him to succeed. Born is the king of Portman Road?

Now now, let's not be too harsh on Bobble - I'm sure he is about to expand this point about Fulop's poor command of English with the correct Hungarian phrases for 'on the bounce' and 'back to back wins'.

clearly bobble's bubble has burst

it was evident in games that he's started that he just needed more time on the pitch and of course a player like Scotty around. i predict that he'll score some awesome goals, maybe not lots, but if he helps the rest get on scoresheet too then great. It should also be borne in mind that for some games he's played wide so to score 4 so far is not bad. COYB

Souper Jim - i sit in the south stand and looking over in the direction of section six they appear to have disappeared ? have they been moved closer to the middle as there was a big void next to the window of planet blue where they usually fill ??

"King of Portman Road"; I would be the happiest fan if he did indeed attain that mantle.
At 24 he is coming to his best years as a mature footballer.
If he stays consistant and gets a few goals + assists along side Jason than £1.7mil for Priskin will look like decent business. If they can get 25 goals between them than that would have been £2.5mil well spent (Tamas + Jason)!

For the record: Scotland is already looking like one of the best value buys of the season!

joshuanelli, not sure to be honest. Certainly the flags and banners have been absent of late and the atmosphere against northampton took a clear nose dive without them present. I know they've had some trouble as many of them are students and used to rely on having a student ticket for the upper tier and then sneaking into the lower (where there is no student ticket for reasons known only to the club), but the stewards have recently been under strict instructions to combat this. Seems to me the club are determined to eliminate the next generation of die-hard fans in favour of an old trafford prawn sandwich type setup. Maybe citb or one of the other 6 boys will give us an update.

In one comment Bobble has demonstrated what is wrong with some Town fans. They actually do not possess a footballing brain. They think that as soon as they hear the word "striker" that means that they should be scoring 30 goals a season or they aren't good enough. The list is endless of players you can think of if you actually have a brain, where they may not score more than 10-15 goals a season. But their build up play, ability to hold onto the ball and assists make them a valuable asset.

I'm not saying that Priskin is quite there yet, but he is starting to show some encouraging signs and his partnership with Scotland is developing by the game. Was very impressed with him Saturday, inspite of a large amount off idiots sat in the South Upper who still thought he was useless.

Saturdays win was overshadowed for me by some idiotic fans who persisted in screaming negatives at a team that was 2-0 up and keeping a clean sheet. Don't think I'll ever understand it.

Bobble would not be satisfied whoever played up front ! He does not seem to think players need time to settle and form partnerships , some take longer than others , but they can pay off given the time and support ! Priskin is getting the game time and now the support from the SBR stand to enable him to become the player we need .

I admit that the 'slow start' for Priskin worried me, but then you can only score goals if you are actually on the pitch. He looks more confident now and we should all hope that confidence turns into goals.
