Wickham Called Up to England U21s
Monday, 15th Nov 2010 13:50

Town striker Connor Wickham has been added to the England U21 squad for their friendly against Germany in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old has previously won caps at U17 and U19 level but this is his first call into an U21 squad.

Coach Stuart Pearce has been spotted at Portman Road on a number of occasions this season.

In the summer, Wickham netted the winning goal as England beat Spain 2-1 in the final of the European U17 Championships in Liechtenstein.

They must be badly stuck hes been well below par of late and needs to become the player we hoped he would be and not turn into a Dean Bowditch

I have not been impressed by Connor this year. I really thought he would have pushed on and shown some of his potential this season. I suppose that Keane needs to play him first though !!!! Wickham will only suffer under Keane's tenure and hopefully the next manager will bring out the best in our young starlet !!! Good luck with England though Connor !!!

Of couse Whoppit. So when Wickham was simply awesome at the end of last year Keane gets no credit but now he's below average its all Keanes fault. Dont get me wrong. I now want Keane to leave the club so Im not delusional but we cant blame everything on the man. Wickham needs his first town goal of the year to get confidence and Kick on ala Priskin

Disagree with this. You should be picked for your country on form.

Well Done Connor !!
Obviously the England International Coaches know much more about football than some idiots on here and yet they still find a negative out of this positive news!!!

Why is Connor's face all red in that pic? Was Keano "coaching" him with a bollocking??

Always does well when he goes away with England and gets good coaching!

I should think they have earmarked an appearance for the first team by the end of the season, a bit like Owen giving him the smallest taste of each level first. After all his form as not warented a call up.

i have a funny feeling those that are putting a negative spin on this have not actually been at a game this season! No he hasnt played all that well, just coming back from injury - but actually on saturday i do think he showed one or two good touches and did skin the defenders once or twice - just didnt have the confidence to press on and score. Good for you Connor, I will not cry if Keane leaves (although i really wish he would prove us all wrong), however he has done well with the young players and seems protective over young Connor - he is right not to play him week in week out look at the likes of Dyer and Owen, young starlets who are never fit anymore.........

Its not too late to play fo the Rep of Ireland Connor!

TBH I hope he does well and gets a full game. Get Connor fired up and bring on the birdies! Impact sub with a bang!!
I honestly think Keane is waiting for the team to gel and pick up some confidence before he throws Connor back in to first team.

Congratulations & Best of luck Connor!!

Well done Connor! I'm not sure he warrants the negative reaction that some fans have brandished at him this season, although I did here from a friend that he had a "Do you know who I am" moment when house-hunting in Kesgrave, I realise he is young but he isn't exactly Wayne Rooney yet!! Feet on the ground son.

On the positive side, I thought he looked lively at times on Saturday after having received a considerably less-than-warm reception from the crowd and considering the game was already lost!

The less than warm welcome had nothing to do with Wickham coming on, it was the Priskin going off part; the boos were at Keanes tatics, it made more since to keep Priskin on with Wickham.

Well done Connor. This must be a real boost. Showed what potential he has at Newcastle last season. Was outstanding in that game.

Although hasn't been in scintillating form this season, he has looked dangerous & has livened things up in many of the games he's appeared in. Still gaining match fitness after nasty injury & at 17 is learning his trade in a v tough league. Some of the posters on this site at times have expectations which are unrealistic and these need to be tempered. Whilst there's not loads we can do directly to help, I do know one thing....... that he will perform better if we fans all unite and really get behind Connor and back him to the hilt. Priskin and, to be fair the fans, have shown what can happen when player/crowd fire off each other. It's within our power to lift some of the other players, particularly the youngsters. Lets face it, they must be feeling pretty cr@p right now.

We need to be the wind under their wings not in their face.

Surprised by this as he hasn't done well this season and I think he is having the second season syndrome that many young players get.
Is a big boost for him though and as others have mentioned hopefully this will fire him on.
If he can recapture his form of the end of last season it will be a massive boost to the team.
