The ITFC Charitable Trust won the Community Impact award at the East of England Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success Awards Evening in Cambridge yesterday.

The Trust picked up the prize for a 2009 project undertaken by a group of 11 young people on the Team Programme, which is run by the Trust and supported by the Prince’s Trust and Suffolk New College.

The group from Team Five, who were based at Portman Road, spent seven days replacing rotting pontoons for Ipswich Sea Cadets so they were able to take to the sea safely having raised all the money needed for the project themselves.

Terry Baxter chief executive of the Trust was delighted with the award: “This is a great achievement for Team Five and the Trust. The group clearly worked very hard and we are all very proud of their accomplishment and the positive example they have left for future teams.”

Team leader David Smith added: “Team Five took great pride in all the projects they did. We handed complete control to the team. They did all the fundraising, sourced the materials needed and planned and managed the four weeks of projects themselves.

"It was great to work with them and the fact that they did all this without minimum input from the team leaders made it easy for us.”
