Fallon Signs on Loan
Thursday, 25th Nov 2010 12:44

Town have confirmed that striker Rory Fallon has signed on loan from Plymouth Argyle with a view to a permanent switch. The 28-year-old, a New Zealand team-mate of Blues defender Tommy Smith, with be at Portman Road until January 22nd.

The frontman will train with the squad on Friday and could make his Town debut when the Blues travel to Norwich for Sunday's East Anglian derby.

Argyle boss Peter Reid says the move could become a full-time switch: "I've decided to let Rory go out with a view to a permanent move when the transfer window kicks in in January.

"We'll be actively seeking a replacement but I was pleased with the way Rory Patterson has been playing and I've got Joe Mason as well.

"It's a great opportunity for the boy and I'm sure he'll thrive in the Championship environment."

Fallon started in youth football with North Shore United in his home country before joining Barnsley as a 17-year-old. The 6ft 3in tall frontman has subsequently played for Shrewsbury (loan), Swindon, Yeovil (loan) and Swansea before signing for the Pilgrims for £300,000 in January 2007.

The one-time England U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 international target man - he reverted to playing for New Zealand in 2009 - has scored 19 goals in 84 starts and 57 sub appearances for Argyle.

For New Zealand he has scored three goals in 10 games and played in all three matches at the World Cup in South Africa, having netted the goal which secured qualification via a 1-0 play-off second leg victory over Bahrain.

Keano's trying to improve attack, that can only be a good sign.

We're really happy with the signing of another International player, and he provides competition up front and we need goals etc etc Toms broken his leg in training and we need another sort of right back. Listen, we've got hard games coming up I know that the players know that this is for the benefit of the football club. If you're in a nightclub and theres only a couple of girls to choose from it's ok, but if you've got 5 girls in every position you have a much better night. Is that your fookin mobile going off? thanks

Don't get me wrong very keen for competition but the guy has scored one goal in League 1 this year cant see the point of this personally. We have 3 far better strikers already at the club. I hope I am proved wrong but this seems an odd signing to me !!!

I bet Blackpool fans thought the signing of Luke Varney was a bit odd but he's doing well, sometimes a change of scenery is all thats needed. In any case we shouldn't be too hard on him because of his goals tally, he's mainly played for struggling clubs and his style is more of a hold up man than a goal poacher. Could be a good addition.

The signing of another big striker appears to me to reinforce Keane's misguided belief that 4-5-1 is the way forward. I do hope I'm wrong.
It's amazing that we've gone from trying to sign Michael Chopra to signing a League 1 striker on loan in such a short space of time.

From Wikipedia:

Rory Fallon is a Christian who is involved with the charity faith and football. He has revealed that he moves clubs based on what God tells him. He told the Guardian: "One club has come in for me, but I don't feel the Lord wants me to go. I will wait on what the Lord says. I don't feel I have got a clear message to leave yet, so I'm staying. I'm instructed by the Lord, and I keep telling people this. They probably think I'm mad, but I know full well that when Paul Sturrock came in and wanted me to go to Southend I had a dream and the Lord told me to stay at Plymouth. I have had no instructions since so I stay at Plymouth."

A striker who communicates directly with him upstairs. Who, it would appear, has instructed him to move to Ipswich. Always said God was a Town fan!

I really don't know what to say, this has tipped it for me! The guy has lost the plot....

Seriously what good is a Plymouth reserve striker with 66 goals in 319 appearances at League 1 or below going to do for us when Keane doesn't even give our strikers a decent run in the side. And ANOTHER Loan, so how many is that now. Worrying, worrying signs! Hope I'm proved wrong....

FFS just give Connor & Priskin a run rather than 1 up top with no help and dropping them coz they ain't scoring....

AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

Keanes signed him to be a target man, he finally realised punting to a small, slow Scotland does not work, next hell realise we dont need to play that style and we dont need him in january. I think Norwich fans are scared of this signing . . . . . . . . .

On paper this isn't particularly inspiring (unspectacular cv to date and not in great form this season). My friend who is a Plymouth fan says he can be unplayable on his day, but doesn't score enough and goes missing a lot...

That said, I can't help but be reminded of when BFJ signed Shefki Kuqi in similar circumstances. If he can make that sort of impact, then happy days!

Welcome aboard Rory, and good luck!

....Then he'll realise unless he plays some passing attacking football Keane can leave in January too...

Have we lost all our ambition as a club? Probably play him out of position anyway!

When Fallon is fit and on form he will be a huge asset to us although not a goal machine he is a real handfull, but i have seen him not fit and firing and he is a waste of space. Hope the first one turns up.

So the signing of a target man will mean more long hoofs up front, great.....

Always rated him when he played for Plymouth against us, often this type of, shall we say "low key signing" often turns out to be the best!! lets hope so. Good luck Rory.

What must this do to our current strikers confidence (already shot to pieces), getting dropped for a League 1 player who has only scored once all season!

If we lose Connor (the brightest prospect we've had in years) for the likes of this guy then Keane really doesn't know what he is doing (which for the record I don't think he does now). Priskin was just getting his confidence back and Scotland must be fed up of getting balls hoofed to him with no-one to help out.

What a sad bunch a lot of people are on here! Slated a player before a ball is kicked in anger! Lets get one thing right Fallon has been playing at Championship level for at least the last 3 seasons with Argyle before this one!

Ok not a goalscorer but on his day can really upset the oppo defence! Has scored the odd important goal in his career including the goal that took New Zealand to the world cup. He was part of the only undefeated team at the world cup too!

Lets also not forget Plymouth have a habit of letting forwards go who go on to better things, look at Mariner, or more recently Ebanks-Blake at Wolves and even Fallons strike partner last season Mackie who currently tops the Championship charts!

Just get behind the lad before you all start slagging him off before he has played!

Not sure why people are being critical of his goal record, knowing Keane he has probably signed him as a left back.

Words escape me. Actually they're coming back....a horrific signing. Living in Plymouth and having seen him in action i can honestly say this is an atrocious aquisition. My colleagues in work here who are Argyle season ticket holders are laughing themselves silly. Apparently on tues night against Dagenham his first 5 touches were to Dagenham players. He's been booed off every game this season. I did hear he has just been spotted at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth this morning so the only glimmer of hope is that he fails his medical and the deal falls through. Not happy

Hmmm ....Rory Fallon 1 goal this season...what about that other League 1 striker who has scores 10 goals in League & Cup. Jordan Rhodes, I think his name is, surely worth a look Keano!
